The only detail is that it shouldn't be less than 1024 x 576 at it's the resolution I currently use for single blog images. But other than that, anything goes !

You're not even forced to include a logo as the title of the blog will be just above, but if you feel like styling it like Drunna did, no problem. Your choice !

The fact it was as a PNG was great though, as it allowed me to recompress it with my own software without it adding to any prior degradation. Talk about the first time of me being glad someone uses PNGs. ^^

I had noticed you've been less active than usual lately indeed. But that happens to everyone. Your work grew in maturity quite fast however, and largely deserved to be featured.

On a side note, I'm not a big fan of trailer/advertisement entries, it often spoils a good part of the real entries, and takes one more slot in the main blogs page, without being the so craved story content. There are a couple of author trying such things, and I'm not sure it's really a good way to proceed. You can always advertise your entries via the Skyrim screens threads (in the forum), via status messages, or even via twitter or other social medias IMO. ?

Anyway, trailer or not, I will eagerly wait to read about Thora this autumn then. :classic_wink:

That's interesting to hear as most modern software these days allow saving images as png (even Microsoft Paint and Powerpoint). I guess I got used to saving finished images by default in png because of the background transparency and that it saves in the highest uncompressed format that every site/program accepts - unlike bmp.

Unfortunately, I do downgrade my comics both resolution and image format as most image hosting sites limit the file size per image. So what you have been reading was the best balance between resolution size and image compression I could get under file size limitations.

It's not a question of sofware being old or not. PNG is an extremely old format, it is supported by image editors since the first men drew fire from the stone. The thing is it's a practical working and editing format, is it's lossless yet more optimized than BMP.

But it's not optimized for web sharing, as it's 6x heavier than a preset 95 JPEG, while the differences are negligible when they can be noticed to begin with. So it's a good thing you go for lossy JPEG for sharing in your final blog entries. :classic_wink:

I admit I never thought about the format I use,I don't know much about it. A friend of mine always told me to save my work as PNG in Photoshop. So that's what I upload on my blog. Maybe I should think about that for my next projects. Having something lighter for people with a low speed connection, for confort or for the website.

Well the load is not only proportional to the weight of the images, but also to their numbers. So if you keep making relatively short entries, the annoyance for the readers shouldn't be noticeable. Yet, the load on the servers however, still its higher with PNG than JPEG. And, you might want to use higher resolutions or create longer entries in the future. So, IMO, there's currently no reason not to optimize compression for web sharing, :classic_smile:

If you wanna get your hands on a good JPEG compressor, you might want to take a look at the first part of this guide.

I think just the pseudonym (for example "Oni-9") instead of pseudonym + name ('"Oni-9 Samuel L Jackson") would give recognition without endangering their anonymity. But as long as their names are removed, that's the important point.

Holy shit i wasn't expecting a shoutout after all this time.

I'm actually gonna be rebooting the story Eventually™️, since in between my own standards raising, me improving the shit out of my general setup, and having a more concrete idea of the overall story i want to tell, there's no sense trying to make it fit with the original when i can just start fresh with all the new bells and whistles and story elements. That should start at some point within this century.

Joke aside, it'd be a pleasure to see your story start again ! Same than Hellonow restoring a few entries for Mai's adventures, it's often nice to see an author getting back to it (though in her case IRL took back its right rather quickly).

If I may, the writing quality is to be maintained, but the flow of images was somewhat irregular. I think that's a point to be watched-out in future works, should they take a similar illustrated text form. :classic_smile:

@Tirloque It's maybe dumb but I have an other question about compression : I use IfranView like it is said in the link., why not setting a quality of a jpg to 100 ? I mean, 100 = no compression at all ?

You always have compression with jpg, it's core to the format. You use trigonometric functions to approximate your image. All you do by setting the quality is determining how close your approximation is compared to the real image.

Jpeg is a lossy format, meaning it's intended to have some invisible losses even at the lowest levels of compression. 100 quality has invisible degradations for the images. That's why the file size is smaller than lossless formats in the first place.

There are plugins in Irfanview which would allow you to go for experimental lossless jpeg, but it didn't work the time I tried.

Anyway, the choice is simple :

Working formats : go for lossless, as you're going to do multiple edits and any lossy codec would then progressively degrade the image => PNG, PSD, BMP etc.
Web sharing format : only use for the very final compression before sharing => JPEG. You're free to choose where to set the cutoff, though 100 isn't that efficient, and below 91 isn't that good in terms of quality. Less file size = less load on the servers = less waiting time for slower connections, and less planet resources killed by the servers ! ^^

It's in the order they would appear on the blog page (newest on top) and the newest ones were much better. There's no real reason for anyone to read the really old ones other than people who already read them and wanted to see them again for some reason. It's not there for new readers.

Well, IMO what's the point of an hub page if it doesn't offer something more than just clicking on the blog page ? Anyway, that's completely minor, as long as you do what's seems best to you, it's alright.

Well it does offer something more than clicking on the blog page since 80% or so of those stories aren't on the blog page ?. That's the whole point of it, it really is just an archive as the name says.

@ Everyone

I have noticed two blogs that would meet my criteria for admission. However, they are video blogs, and one of them hosts its videos on pornhub. That's one step closer to regular porn, may induce frequentation on sites some of us might've wanted to avoid. Despite this, both have valid stories, and a certain amount of already featured blogs do have gifs and even some video parts. So I do hesitate about adding a video category or not. So I added a poll, in order to have an idea of your thoughts on the matter. :classic_smile:

II - BLOGS' STATUS

@hellonow : I hope my pokes don't bother you too much, but your blog still is worth it, IMO, and since the corona leads to many lockdown, think at maintaining it if you have the time ! If you think you probably won't do it in the future, tell it to me, I might be tempted to feature it into lost blog entries (where I do restore them myself). :classic_smile:

@noobshi : there remain two entries affected by the post-image issue (Forgotten & Vigilant). If you have a minute to spare, think to them !

@The First Lady of Hats : I realized your blog was in fact not a subtitled one, but rather illustrated text. Placed it accordingly. I hope you'll get the motivation to share with us soon !

@Agent Tex : saw the story indexes, which are a good idea. I do also consider, that considering the amount of entries and storylines your blog currently features, it could be considered as fully available. You made it ! :classic_wink:

@Alter Native : saw you went as far as giving credits for the mods used in your summary/hub page. Kudos for the effort ! O_o

@jfraser & Brotherofcats : as you may see, I started implementing feature images even for pure text blogs, as I now consider that even classic books can get to have a cover. I mainly picked them among the blogs' backgrounds, but if that displeases you or if you have another suggestion, please mention.

III - TROUBLESHOOTING

For the authors that use the follow entry function to receive notifications for comments, it seems the bug that cancels it reappears each time LL is updated (even if it's a minor one).

To restore that feature, simply edit the entry (with a minor change), and save it. The "follow" button should now store demands correctly.

Well you might be among the only two I saw doing that, and the only one who did it consistently. Plus in the summary, that doesn't takes place in your regular entries. So there's only good sides with things as you've done them already. The only detail is that people may not know those infos are in the hub page, but you could always redirect them if them ask. ?
