I was browsing Nexus and checked my mail. There is a notice there about Starfield, coming to you this November:

https://www.nexusmods.com/news/14688

I had no interest in this game whatever (I'm waiting for the next TES game) until I read the brief note from Nexus. Evidently this game will be fully moddable using a new and improved version of the Creation Kit.

So, now I'm curious about what level of interest there may be for this game.

Wouldn't pre-order it but it does look interesting although not sure how much adult mods will fit into a space sim (thinking like elite 2) as space is pretty big so wouldn't think you'd be running into npcs every 30 seconds like you do in skyrim/fallout

I'm two minds on it.

Firstly, having another game that is as moddable as Skyrim and Fallout is great, can't complain. It's one of the reasons as to why I enjoy them so much and made the switch to PC gaming years ago.

But the other half has me a bit sceptical. If we end up with a situation like SL or Osex, then that would be amazing. But I honestly can't see it. Fallout 4 seems to me at least to be confusing to get going and I just can't seem to get it working as smoothly as SL.

just wait until release and see the reviews if it's good, the thing about digital products is that they never run out of stock so I don't see the reason to pre-order it.

FO4 with an even dumber/arbitrary story and about 30% more lifetime sales, and like FO4 higher initial sales, 85% of which are initial console buy ins, still like FO4 half the lifetime numbers of Skyrim.

I am waiting anxiously for this for the modding potential.  I am going to pre-order it .  I know that is frowned upon by many here, but I expect this to become one of my favorites.

I sure as hell am not going to pre-order. Part of the problem of shit quality and bug-ridden releases of modern AAA titles are all the muppets that jump on hype trains and throw premium at a product they have never seen in their life. I want no part of it.

I'll wait 2-5 years then get Special/GOTY/Anniversary/whatever edition for fraction of the price. If it goes well it might even have a robust modding scene with a lot of choices by then. Not getting it before that.

I still haven't bothered with FO4 and I played FO:NV the game far more than Skyrim the game. I modded Skyrim a lot but Bethesda cannot write decent characters/stories and FO4 visually is no upgrade over Skyrim. After seeing the playable UE5 City Sample whatever improvements Bethesda said they did with CK for Starfield it better be huge because UE5 is really gunning after open world. If Starfield is literally just Skyrim-in-space I might never play it either.

Starfield is going to be something of a litmus test for my expectations for TES6. Ar they going to stop nickle-and-dimeing their customers at every possible opportunity? Or are they going to continue the relentless dumbing down of recent games? I'm cautiously optimistic, now that the company finally has a new owner ... but Starfield will give us our first concrete indication of the direction they intend to pursue.

I'd also point out that "fully moddable" doesn't necessarily mean "fully moddable from day one". So be prepared to wait half a year of more for the new improved CK. It also doesn't say anything about how we'll be able to distribute these mods. Will we still be able to upload to Nexus or LL? Or will everything have to go through Beth's servers and be digitally signed before it will work for the general public?

I really hope it's going to be good. That said, a certain amount of expectation management seems wise.

I will buy it there is no doubt, i mean it never hurts doing a playthrough or two without any mods. Just to know how the game is vanilla.

And later it will probably be a good modded game.

And if the modders here on LL start creating mods for it, that would be great.

I mean having some BDSM content for it wouldn't hurt, it just fits perfectly into a futuristic kind of game.

Maybe the new creation engine is finally good, it will show us how TES6 will be.

I'll probably buy Starfield. I wasn't going to but this thread says it's fully mod-able and it would be fun to jump in and make mods for it. I'm afraid Bethesda got a little too woke and I don't want a political preaching game.  I believe everyone should play the game they want to play and stop worrying about what others are playing, so mods. I like Fallout 4, especially because of the mods tho' everyone should play it without mods at least one play-through.

Just looked at the Curator reviews on Steam... yeah, Bethesda wrote a couple of them.

? "fully moddable" ?

:classic_cool: That raised my attention. Now, I sit back, wait some time (1 year+) and watch IF they have learned anything from their crap club adventure

Starfield represents an opportunity for a fresh start, one with no pre-existing lore or continuity to potentially bork with new developments and no pre-existing expectations as to what it should look or play like.

Perhaps it will be worthy of attention enough to draw players away from other established franchises. Perhaps it will be a quickly forgotten also-ran. Either way, I am not betting against it.

Oh they have to get it right since it seems to be a main flagship game for xbox latest tech and all of macroshit pay/pass/scam/whatever services so yes they will be promoting the hell outta this game closer to launch. One rumor I heard was the way they handle space travel is somehow going to be how they handle travelling by boat in the next elderscrolls game. That kind of makes sense as we have fallout 76 to look back on for tech advances in their zombrex nevergonnadie gaming engine.

As long as this game doesn't turn out to be Kill Loot Return in space with extra garvey added then it should be ok.

IF I buy it (big IF) it will have to be after I've seen real game play by real people, not Youtube shills.  After all of the lies and broken promises are exposed, the Creation Kit is released, and it's on sale; then I might buy it.  Let's all be real here; it's going to be a Bethesda game made by Bethesda devs. i.e. a broken buggy cluster fuck with a shit story and radiant quests to pad out the playtime.  Like any other Bethesda game, modders will do their thing.  I didn't bother because I was cheated out of $60 for FO4 and I'm not going to get burned again.  Bethesda cured me of the 'fear of missing out'.

Preorder; evidently FO76 didn't teach some people their lesson.  In less than a month the game was half price.

Season Pass; Did the two real dlcs and the $10 packs (that should have been free updates) pull their weight for FO4?  NOPE.

I don't have much confidence in Beth's ability to make a game that simultaneously has interesting RPG mechanics and story elements combined with an open world sandbox.

They made Morrowind, which was pretty solid in those regards, but obviously had nothing like the modding scene of later games.

Then came Oblivion, which was more or less an RPG with a story. The combat mechanics were pretty bare bones, the setting was this very generic medieval European theme that was much less interesting than an Elder Scrolls title deserved, and the leveling system was ass backwards in that it was often beneficial to delay leveling up to gain stats. Still, it was a pretty fun game overall despite its flaws, especially with all of the mods.

Next was Fallout 3, which had leveling mechanics and stats, and not much more. The story was a cliched mash up of the first two games and none of the world building or characters made any sense for a post-nuclear wasteland. Compared to what Obsidian did for Fallout: New Vegas, while under some pretty limiting constraints set by Bethesda, this game was an embarrassment. I never played it through more than once, even mods couldn't fix the bigger problem for me.

Of course, basically anyone who's played a video game in the last decade knows about Skyrim. The open world is probably the best Bethesda has ever done, but mechanically it is inferior to Oblivion in many ways. The whole attribute system and derived stats were watered down into stamina, magicka, and health. The whole class system, major and minor stats, and the racial stat differences were all done away with. The only redeeming factor here is the perk system, which adds a lot of interesting ideas to building the PC. The combat, which makes up most of the game, is practically unchanged from 2006. A lot of the NPCs only exist to give the PC info or quests without seeming like they have some reason of their own to be part of the world. Frankly, the decade of work people put into making this game great is the most impressive part of it. And here Bethesda repays this with the whole paid mods and CC mess, as well as apparently being obligated to break the entire executable library that all SKSE mods depend on every five years.

And as for Fallout 4, I can't really say much. I never played it and have no intention to. The game is more of an adventure looter/shooter and the world doesn't seem compelling. Adding voiced lines to the PC was also very poorly implemented. In a good RPG game like Mass Effect (the first one, not the later garbage like ME3), it adds a lot to the character to have their emotion displayed in audio as well as text. For an open world game where the character is not pre-defined, it takes a lot away from the player to restrict them to one of two voices. It doesn't help that most of the dialogue options boil down to [agree], [disagree] or [question].

So, will Starfield actually be a good game? Based on Bethesda's prior work, probably not, but there is some room for hope. I don't mean to say that a game being Kill Loot Return makes it bad per se, but it does make it a bad RPG and is ultimately much less interesting than a game that provides compelling reasons for the PC to do what they are doing. There is a steady trend here of the gameplay and story mechanics being made simpler and less complex, into a sort of bland mix that appeals to a large audience in shallow ways but not in deep or meaningful ways. I half expect Todd to come out on stage when TES 6 is being previewed and say "This whole skills and perks thing is too much for most players, so now when you level up you get to choose between RED, BLUE, or GREEN! Wow!"

From a modding standpoint, hopefully Bethesda has learned from past mistakes and doesn't interfere in the content or monetization of mods. Unfortunately, it fits in well with the currently popular idea in the video game industry of perpetually profiting from a game over its lifespan after it's already sold and the idea in society of censoring ideas that others might find offensive or icky (like basically everything on this site for example). Technically, the Creation engine is pretty good for most of the stuff you do in these games, like bonking people with a sword. For more interactive animations, especially things that require the actors to move in rhythm like the adult stuff, it's not so great.

tl:dr; Will Starfield be a good game, both in terms of gameplay and potential for (adult) mods? Probably not, almost definitely not without other people spending years to fix what Bethesda messed up, and some of the most important factors here are difficult if not impossible to fix if the game is not built specifically for them. Well, it is a brand new IP, so I guess there is some hope.

I think i am interested in it.

It looks like Mass Effect. At  the same time i am actually happy that they offer a new IP instead of milking just the IP they already have.

We will see, when it hits the virtual shelves, how it is in reality. There isn't really much you can see at the moment.

But i do not think i would buy it when it hits the market, rather when its getting cheaper.

As for modding, with every new game i am hoping to see better animations, better mods. For moddable, i am not sure. Maybe they mean their own mod system. No one knows at this point.

I am not really in fantasy worlds ala Skyrim but scifi. Its a theme that offers many choices.

Its a pity that Mass Effect never had sex mods. I think it would be freaking nice to fuck around. But we will see.

For mods, i came to the point that i got bored. Any way you play, its basically the same without chances. It is mostly ok for most, but for me, i hit the wall. That is why i like to see a new game with a fresh start and with new ideas.
Got to admit that i was not a Bethesda fan. Main reason for me was that they bought the fallout franchise and did not keep the rpg aspect from previous games. Perhaps we are glad they did, as we can mod the game for sex purposes.

Starfield....

Nope, ever hear of a thing called Creation Club?

No, well its this horrific experience where they break your game every month with an update.

Ever hear of Cyberpunk2077?

If you have, I rest my case here.

YT is mostly paid hirelings or people willing to suck corpo dick for party favors.
