A certain company is accused of selling people's information to the highest bidder. Not long after I saw an ad stating that they weren't selling information. Gee they said they weren't doing it so it must be true.:classic_rolleyes:

Headline news wrote that some guy who killed people, looked up (googled)

"why did Hilter hte Hews?" Or words to that effect.

Point being, be careful what you google, so I said that, somewhere, and got totally tossed off like it was noise.

"what's the most perverted-first-time-show-yourself thing ya wanna do?"

Who wants to know?

Why?

If (by gosh and by google) if you're ever arrested, they might ask, "Are you now, or have you ever been, a "

followed by a trendy PC list.

And they'll have Google to narc on you

All such threads could easily be unified into a super thread titled something along the lines of  'Go Dox Yourself'.

Corporations pay top dollar to obtain that kind of data yet people just give it away for free.

Knowledge is Power and they relinquish that power so easily.

Lately I have been avoiding the news. It is just like a cheep Spanish soap opera with love, hate and occasional cheating.

Not to hate on Telenovelas but there is just so much garbage I can take before I say "I'm done". How does Google feel about porn? Not the illegal kind but porn like you see on this site. Can you sell that kind of information?

No doubt we sold our soul for the internet but joke's on you I already sold my soul to Santa Claus HAHAHAHAHA! Ah yeah. The internet isn't so different from the real world in which information is spread and sometimes bought.

Reminds me of that scene from 'Minority Report' where retinal scanners identify you and blast you with 'personal' ads while walking through a mall or such.

It's funny at the end since he replaced his eyes, he is in effect - hacking the system.....

If you ignore the macguffins which drive the stories in Minority Report and Freejack, both paint a believable vision of the future.

Supposedly the original cut of Freejack was something of an thought provoking, intellectual thriller. Unfortunately the initial test screenings were full of Homer Simpsons, causing the studio to do heavy reshooting which retooled it into the hare-brained action flick with some leftover thought provoking material peppered on the side that it became. And sadly the original cut was lost so we'll never get to find out.

No supposedly about it. Same thing happened to Strange Days and Babylon A.D, wherein Vin Diesel said he'd never work for Fox or Tom Rothman again, and the only one out of these films to have a surviving full cut of the movie was Strange Days.

Supposedly something similar happened with The Matrix though mainly concerning the explanation for what the machines were using humans for.

Rather than using them as an extremely inefficient power source, they hooked them up to the system as wetware processors, meaning that every time a human escaped The Matrix, the machines become gradually less capable of preventing more humans from doing the same.

No matter how much contempt programs like Smith had for humans, they'd have to know that they could never wipe humanity out unless they want to become simpler machines again.

You'd likely not need to replace the eyes.. just use contacts with some changes to mess up the reader.  That or dark sunglasses. They work in almost every such situation where you want to hide..

In the first matrix if I remember correctly Neo is told that there a expected number of failures (humans) which occur due to the matrix.  A computer would have calculated this and had a buffer to be sure it had enough processing power if this was used.  Also if you could truly capture the energy created by a human eating cheap protean and sugars (basic dietary requirements) and get the output... it would be quite efficient. I don't believe they could  but if they could.. then quite efficient. The process of turning food into energy and building blocks are one of the most efficent systems known to man. There are scientist that are trying to (or have to limited success) in creating bacteria that can create biofuel that can be used in place of gas, oil etc. An endless supply of energy for a very little cost (simple sugar and proteins etc)  with very little by product compared to processing crude to usable fuels.

The same result could be obtained by drawing energy from non-sapients (possibly even cloned organs) who have no chance of escaping The Matrix whatsoever.

Of course, disembodied brains could serve the function of wetware processors so the other version of the story would still require the machines not doing whatever runs the lowest risk of backfiring on them.

Large portions of the brain of any organism contributes to the function of the body.  Also requires the body to be there as well.  Cloned organs isn't the complete circuit. It has to do with bio-feedback and hormonal feedback and checks and balances.

If they wanted to go that route.. they could have breed the humans over generations to be more compliant and receptive is another argument. however, if that was the desired results it failed as they remove those humans from the system. (should also logic dictate remove their genetic materials as well, or a computer would have come to that conclusion as well) so breeding has nothing to do with the issue.  The better route would have been to custom design a living organism with less need of higher function but still had a high brain to body ratio which is why out of all the species they could have used.. they used humans. Pound for pound humans brains have the largest proportions.

In the end the entire story could have been moot if they just gave them  brain surgery that would limit or remove their higher brain functions. Possible minor hit in power but increased power production. Even that would not resolve the issue IMO. Having lower output in the cell and the same expense (food etc) isn't logical (computer) and doesn't make sense so they would remove the body.. dump it for a more productive organism.  In the end any argument to alter their "science' regarding humans based on the science and story rules.. would make no sense in the mind of the computers. At least as I see it.

The 'Season Pass'

I'm split on this game concept. I never subscribed to it early on, instead watching to see how they played out. Already a fan of the GOTY versions which seemed to release sometime later (this is actually the game I want at launch), having all the DLC and most maintenance done on the title, worked for me.

As I purchased more games over time it did seem the 'DLC' wasn't going away, but the season passes for the most part included everything a GOTY version would eventually offer, and later this has been the case.

Then it becomes a price point. Am I saving money getting the season pass, or buying the DLC each as released? Since my range of IP's are limited, most every AAA game I get seems to have them, and while most DLC has been 'good', it really boils down to a gamble.

I'm not a gambler by nature, so I always feel a bit of trepidation when giving almost double the base game price when purchasing the season pass. Maybe I should return to the GOTY versions as being 'first' was never a thing for me. Plus having most bugs squashed when I finally get around to getting a game is nice. Batman Arkham Knight /PC anyone?

In the end the person who reaps the greatest reward is the one who waits for 50-75% discounts

Upgrading systems a few years after prices drop which can run the games released previously whose prices have also dropped kept me having more fun, than trying to stay on top of everything, at a higher cost.

Waiting on AC Odyssey to release DLC found me losing interest in playing as I did when new. Here I am a year later, just hitting the fields of Elysium, yet the will to play has diminished.

Earlier GOTY's I purchased pretty much kept my interest till done with all of it.

the person who said "the pen is mightier than the sword" is clearly an arrogant twat.

The pen is not meant to be a weapon but although it can be used as a weapon the person wielding the sword will almost always come on top. The effectiveness of the written word however depends on the will of the one wielding the sword therefore the one wielding the sword has more power. Given sword, gun, mount or even pen there are those with power that wield all of them.

There is probably someone who said this better than me but fuck it I'm a genius.

No matter how poisonous the pen or persuasive the prose, neither will sway the will of a hungry predator to make a meal of the mealy mouthed man-thing.

Being geniuses you're being deliberately obtuse or just really pissed....anachronistic cannibals.

But I'm only thinking out loud

You guys old enough to remember the introduction of the 'Roast' as a form of entertainment?

The only reason it worked was because we know - there's a little truth in every joke - knowing when to stop was the classy part.

Can't believe it's almost 70°F in my neck of the woods, right now.  It should be about half of that, given this is January.

Same here, last wednesday was at highest 6C (~43F), when it usually is at least around -10C (~ 14F) this time of the year. Well, statistically next month is always the coldest, but it seems there won't be winter this year.

I remember back when i was in polytechnic about 10 years ago, there was a week where temperature was below -30C (-22F) all the time. Haven't seen temperatures that low in years.

Hey, i'm a real-life Nord, i like the cold

...Fahrenheits are weird. 0 Celsius is where water freezes and 100C is where water boils (in normal air pressure), and it's just expanded from there. 0 Kelvin is the absolute zero, and it's degrees are the same size as Celsius.

0F is -18C, which is.... what? ?

I went off and read about it, and if you peed into a glass with ash and salt, and waited until it froze, it would be close to 0F.

Curmudgeons who live here *like* being different, it shys away from the whole one-world philosophy of having a single time (GMT) a single temp and the metric system (as opposed to....Hang on, I'll google it) SAE (I knew that, but I thought I was confusing oil)

...Right. That's makes sense. After all, who doesn't regularly encounter an ash-salt-pee mixture more often than water in their daily lives?
