i'm not going to go any further here because i've presented my stance on the issue pretty thoroughly and it's met with willful ignorance. all i'm going to say is that generation wars are unnecessary and divisive because at the end of the day, they all turn into each other without fail.

It is true the passage of time affects the issues people have. For example using computers late at night tends to mess up a person's sleep schedule. But I agree to blame an entire generation for your problems is just stereotyping. I would recommend a percentage based argument or at least a generalization (not to be confused with stereotypes) based off of legitimate surveys or research.

When I finally watched Top Gun Maverick I saw The Force Awakens all over again.

 

Maverick went from a 'reborn' military participant to a burned out rebel flaunting orders like Poe before being called upon to teach a bunch of no-nuts how to fly the death star trench run and drop their bombs on a 2 meter vent.

 

Sorry if this isn't a popular view of the movie - I just call it like I see it.

 

Every shot and music cue was ripped from the original movie and any progress he had made was ignored to create more drama. He also refused rank like Capt. Kirk just to stay 'in the chair'. There was nothing original about the movie - A rehash of ideas from other movies using the 'top gun skin' mod.

 

This is how being starved for decent entertainment has changed the 'diet' of many people.

On a related note, wanna see how embedded ideas of CW?WWII are still with us?  This is an article that is almost exactly like the ones written about the primacy of battleships in the 1930s.   I am attaching this to your comment because the real future top gun will be some person sitting at Indian Springs AFB pointing its UAV to "fight" for air supremacy over some far distant land.

Also, when was the golden age of movies?   Does it shift?  Understandably it is a subjective statement, but I tend to agree that the golden age of movies died with the move to TV so movies were great in the 40s/50s/60s.   TV's golden age is likely tied to the move to streaming (70s/80s/90s/00s/half way through the 10s).    So, while I agree with you that the new Top Gun is nothing new, I ask what were you expecting?

 

The next "golden age" will probably not exist because the audience is far too diverse.  We can all retreat to our respective corners of the internet and have more hours of entertainment than we need, just in our area.   

 

I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, as I am biased toward saying having limited choices growing up, meaning everyone in my generation (in the US) knew Miami Vice, or I Love Lucy or Wings, or WKRP in Cincinnati, so we all have a common frame of reference, a shared experience, etc.     However, we lacked diversity in our entertainment options.
