@AKM post in the rant thread got me thinking about a situation that... to be honest most people would love to be in.   I happen to enjoy my job, while hating all the questionable decisions made my leadership.   I have my set of clients, I keep them happy and work to address their issues, making the work rewarding with a decent income.    However, if you are not advancing into management then others view you as "limited in your goals".   So, I took additional classes for an advanced degree, and followed a path to the point that I am now competing for a management position.    But why, and why did I work considerably more hours than usual (I am salaried) when I know I will be competing against some very, VERY well qualified peers.

So, I did my job that I love, and did more work to get an advancement to a job that will take me away from the job that I love because people think "oh you are lazy, goal limited, or just stupid" for not pushing to get promoted.

Perhaps I am typing this out in some self defense mechanism to soften the blow (to my ego) if I don't get the position, but....what if I do?    What then?

It is easy to get lost in the stupid decisions in management. You hear about the heads of big corporations putting too much stock into things like NFTs and no just no :unamused:.  I'm starting to think the long hours are messing with their heads. My advice is do what you feel is good for you. There are people out there with PHDs who chose to instead wait tables at a restaurant and well that's okay. Use what you learned to improve your daily life. Try it out and if it feels like rewarding work to you then do it. If not well you know just say it isn't for you. It sounds like you already make enough to live off of so you are already doing your part for the village. To hell with what other people think! But you do you.

"We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like." - Dave Ramsey

Seems about the same with regards to doing something that will take you out of what you actually want to do/enjoy doing.  I've heard plenty of examples of people working their way up only to realize that the bullshit they have to put up with is not worth the increased compensation (money) from the "higher" position, and then voluntarily going back to "the line", or whatever it's called in that industry.  There's definitely a balance point where enjoyment of whatever you're doing to create income for yourself and amount of income created balance out, beyond which, the increased income just isn't worth the increased headache.

The other side of it is looking at the time/education investment you've put in.  If you didn't get the position, you'd have to decide if that investment was worth it simply for knowledge sake, and then stay with the company at your current position/compensation (whilst you keep applying for the position you were initially turned down for, I assume), or, you could start looking elsewhere, at competitor companies that might hire someone with your experience and education for an equivalent position.  But you'd still have the issue of "What if I get that position (no matter the location) only to discover that I actually really don't think the extra hassle is worth the extra income?"  Then you're right back to 'Knowing more stuff, but not applying it in the intended format'.  Still, knowing stuff is nice, and being stuck in neutral sucks.  Keeping your mind active through learning new stuff really is a necessity, no matter the sector that new stuff is.  Doesn't necessarily have to be work related.

There's way too much out there on an all but infinite number of topics to ever find yourself "bored" or "in neutral".  The fun part about such 'hobbies' is that you get to watch yourself grow, as your knowledge and skill in something you once had not clue #1 about grows.  Still, it really helps to find something you can monetize in some way, shape or form.

I am out of likes, so you will have to settle for a response to say Thank you.  This next position will be the one where it ceases to be what you know that matters to who you know that matters.   Plus my old position will be filled (it can't be left open and it will provide one of the young bucks a promotion opportunity).  So, the die is cast.    This will be the last time I get pulled into this competition.   If I get it.....well.....it might be super funny to turn it down and to see their shocked reactions (and deal with their anger later).

Very wise words and sadly, true in my case.

Good advice for everyone, i think.

I've been afraid to ask, but "wtf were they thinking" is all I can come up with for the "Benedryl challenge", at a wikipedia near you.

A guy (allegedly) shot several neighbors because they said his gun was too loud.

Yeah I'm addicted to "Google news" but (I'm getting writer's block now, have a nice day)

Amazing how the ocean works.  In some areas, wood lasts for millennia (though usually covered in mud).  In others, steel all but disappears in 100 years (RMS Titanic).  An article about how they were able to pull records from a sunken WWII U boat, some with the paper sleeves still intact:

“...these records show a human side to the U-boat crew… a stark reminder of how normal people can be convinced to do awful things by tyrants.”

I saw someone peeing out at a train station and of course I was like "Bad human bad!" but then I realized that some places charge to use their restrooms. In the dystopian future where all places charge to use their restrooms I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of that. That is unless your city funds for a public bush for humans to use.

Leeds Utd sack their manager (after 12 games in charge) and appoint Big Sam Allardyce (aged 68) with 4 games to go. Guerilla football returns to the Premiership.

Leeds currently one place above the relegation zone by dint of goal difference.

Big Sam's first game will be against Man City at the weekend. Oh dear, oh dear oh dear. That could well end up a cricket score. If Leeds get anything from that game I'll show my arse on the town hall steps.

Edit:

I'm not a fan of Leeds but credit to the Leeds fan who described the appointment of Allardyce as "going from Michelangelo to graffiti". ?

I loved wearing this shirt and loved getting questions like "what did that cat do to you".    When I explained it, I would get that look from people who think "oh god, I  understand all the words he is saying but....  I have no idea what it means, but I am afraid that if I don't just agree, he will think I am an idiot".
