Do Italians like or hate how Romans are portrayed in foreign films? Was curious and only found one topic on it that had few responses. Led me to a vid about Latin being spoken in Italy anymore. Apparently it isn't.

> Let me comment this like this : No foreign director ever successfully created a satisfactory movie about certain nation's history. Even domestic directors disagrees about certain things. The problem lays in free interpretations of certain events and people, especially in showing them in the light they are not. For instance https://www.thelocal.it/20161020/mythbusting-ancient-rome-the-emperor-nero

> As for speaking Latin, ordinary or common Italians doesn't speak Latin. We are proud of our history but many foreign historians speaks about our rulers in very bad way, like nobody was normal and if you watch Yugoslavian second world war movies, Italian solders were always pictured as cowards. Hollywood always pictures us as mobs, French people sees us only as pasta and vine lovers being jealous on our culinary experts. And so son, and so on. So, no, we do not like those interpretations. I wish my English is better, especially at 4 a.m. because I could explain it much better.

Ergo the problem with (almost?) every history book ever written and trying to sell a perspective rather than doing extensive research and recording facts.

Are you saying they should let the boy (his son) try instead??  The images shown on TV don't match how I imaged the coronation.  Must be fake news.

As brutal, militarist, materialist thickos who never produced anything original? At least modern Italians have given us good food and footballers.

Wow, did you really not know that the Italians didn't speak Latin? Latin is still used by the Catholic Church but it hasn't been a 'living language' for hundreds of years.

because quite simply there are no more Romans.

From the time of the emperors, all were considered Romans who had the citizenship of Rome and did NOT have to be born in Rome.

So also people who were born in Spain - were considered Romans with the preservation of civil rights.

The last Romans in this sense were the Byzantines in the city on the Bosphorus - only with the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans were there no more Romans!

Today's Italians are NOT Romans (in the original ancient sense) - just as today's Greeks have absolutely nothing in common with the ancient Greeks... except for the places they live.

But language, writing, culture and above all ethnic origin ... completely different.

Even today's Germans (valid from 1000 AD) have little or nothing to do with the Germans - who fought against the Romans around the turn of the era (Christ's birth).

of course, today's Italians identify with their history and that includes that of the Roman Empire. Only today they are mostly the descendants of the conquerors of the Western Roman Empire. In the 1500 years, many peoples have come to Italy and have left their mark on culture and heritage!

---

if today as a "foreigner" you want to learn something about the national Italian soul ... now the following is a good method from my point of view:

Every summer in Verona there is an opera festival - "Freilicht" in the local ancient theater - a fighting arena for gladiators.

Saturday evening - when "Nabucco" is on the schedule ... sit down in the "unnumbered seats in the middle of the Italians - 4 generations wait together for hours until the sunset begins the performance ... and then watch out - the prisoners' choir begins ...

...if you don't understand it - you will never understand it - especially not from books or television.

Car got stolen, took the PD 3 months to find it. Found it at an impound lot it had been towed. PD refuses to seize it stating I just reported it stolen because I thought it would get me out of the fees.

Except for the fact that EVERY tow must be reported to PD before, it was never reported,,, so regardless, it was an illegal tow from start to finish. (I had NO idea, got up one day and it was gone No noise, no drag marks, just gone.) The cop that came out to take my statement looked around and didn't see any glass or drag marks either.

Got a lawyer involved, she told me my cities PD has the lowest stolen car recovery rate in the state.  It's not that they can't find the cars, they just don't want to act on it.

All that drama aside, I've got an appointment at 5am tomorrow (as of this post) and need to use Uber. I set it up and to schedule the ride it's going to be 40$. If I book it right now it's 8$...

Ok so log into Lyft, 35$ to schedule, 6.90 if I booked it right now.

They both advertise that scheduling a ride before hand saves time and money, but both also state rides are not guaranteed although I can cancel at any time..... Where's the savings, where's the convenience.

So what's on my mind? I guess I'll take Lyft's ass fucking over Uber? Or just get up at 4am and turn on both apps and see which one picks up first.

So just came back yesterday from the Miami GP, very mixed feelings cause it's a beautiful city but the current "climate" there is, well quite a big oof so to speak. And man i can not get over how loud f1 cars are, i've been to races before like previous year's Miami GP and to Austin for GPs that were held in COTA but man but it's thrilling every time. You can literally feel your bones shaking when the cars fly by in a DRS zone, really fun week overall. And of course i'm gonna go to the Vegas GP and US GP later this season.

Also Alonso keeps kicking ass! I love how Aston Martin are stronger this year than Mercedes despite being a customer team to them lmao. If Red Bull didn't exist Alonso would've washed the whole grid, what a legend. I wish Stroll would pick up some pace though but eh.

I watched that race, no cautions, no virtual Caution cars, no crashes. The announcers were saying they were to cautious and saving their tires. I thought the lead in to the race was a bunch of ass kissing to celebrities' although it was good to see Sir Jackie Stewart!

Spoilers for Back to the Future the first one:

Spoiler

What would happen if Marty McFly really did bone his mom? Or did she want to bone him? That is what happens when you only know the plot summary and not the actual movie. I did a little research and it turns out they didn't make little Martys together because of some fading family photo. Maybe the future family just wasn't in that picture and Marty popped out of the womb just fine.

I guess I'm just wondering is it possible to make to make a clone of yourself by boning your mom? Also the song Mad World is stuck in my head despite having a good day. Today was a weird day?

I'm working on my current chapter...I have to go to Riften and the city guard is babbled on about visitor taxes.

Well - I'll pay for it - he'll give me his name and I'll talk to the Jarl about his extra income.

Oh yes - and he shouldn't get the idea - tell me something about "Stechus Kaktur" or "Biggus Dickus" - I already know the number

Well, in Skyrim you just slap people around for being idiots. Think it is much more effective.

Yeah the driver entrance thing was pretty cringe and i don't know who tf greenlit that lmao. There were a few bumps here and there like De Vries running into the back of Norris on lap 1 but yeah it was a pretty clean race besides stuff like that. Most of the crashing happened in FPs and qualifying like Leclerc binning his car or Magnussen spinning out and somehow it curving along the barricade so perfectly, that was pretty insane.

I'm just happy Aston Martin is in the fight again man, they needed this and it shows that the team is making steps in the right direction.

Well you had a good time and that's all that matters, I personally could not deal with the crowds, packed in like Sardines!! Woof.

I would really have enjoyed the less Commercialized areas where you could see/hear/taste/smell the action!

I knew you liked racing but Damn 3 GP's scheduled!
