Exar Kun Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Â Well no but forgive me for saying that i don't think burning the world to ground in order to save it qualify as a productive solution. Well, no. On the other hand, if we were to limit our reaction to murmuring "dashed poor show, that. I may have to reconsider my spending plan", then it's unlikely that our dissatisfaction would even be noticed. Â And honestly, I do think this is one case where we need to make our feelings clear. I mean I'm open to suggestions for more effective ways to do that... Â Â Well we could do some peaceful protests of sort, say uploading paid (bogus mods) worth whatever but being inflated with useless filler ranging from gigabytes to terabytes and overload Valves servers. I've got this idea to upload a crappy mod to the workshop for cash, the mod would contain skyrim Although that maybe would be DMCA'd but of course I'd change my name to Todd Howard before hand.
Buddy Christ Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 well maybe after all this blows over[hopeflly] LL will adda "donation button" for you guys. or some means of support other than a pat on the back. and i aint sayin that to sound crude in any way. Â Well, is there really a need for a "donate" button and wouldn't it make things "too official" with Paypal not supporting XXX material in any way? Can't you link to your donation page on Paypal on the download page? Â Of course Ashal would have to give his ok first. And with a link and no "donate" button, it might be easier to fool Paypal into not finding out that the donations are for "adult stuff"..... D_ManXX2 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Wholy shit almost 70 pages. Wow if everyone would have put energy in creating new mods we would be swarming in them. I have never seen a new mod it self getting so much users base going. like what i seen what happend with steam. Â Btw any noticed steam had a free trial going on for skyrim this weekend ?? Also there where major discount too. 75%.

windpl Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015    Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.   A scam only works as long as you fall for it. day-1 dlc is often brought up when talking about how companies are greedy yadayada, but for some reason people still buy it, why? Why do you keep pre-ordering? Why must you play everything on release day.  Wanna punish a company? don't buy anything from them, having angry customers is like it or not better for business then having no customers.   That's why pitchforks are raised, we been fooled once. They of course can force it, but at least they won't brag that they fucked us and we smiled when they did it.   But why the need for pitchforks? would a simple: No we don't want it like this / not at all. not do the trick? why are we talking as if the world is going to end or better yet has already ended when it has not.  Unless something drastic like Beth saying all mods must now be on steam behind a paywall that we take cut from, that might/will mean the death of modding, but even with this new rather poor attempt at providing a service to earn money from modding, the only thing that will kill the mod community is the community itself.  Sure the argument can be made that Beth or Valve or what ever can pull the plug anytime they want, and shoot it all down cus them devs so evil yo. but have they? Nope. Will they? Who knows, but i dont' think so.  But sure let's mount the horses light the torches raise our hands and pitchfork and storm the palace and behead the king that will teach them not try new things.  So once again yes V and B fucked up in big a way no argument there but the way the community handled it was not much better, and looking back at this if i was a game dev i would really think twice about opening the door for mod support, because it seems if i do something wrong with it in any way, i better have my last will and testament in order.   Because when DLC showed up we said no, and look how it ended. We will see how pitchforks will work now. And don't fool yourself, they aren't supporting mods, with 75% cut they supporting themselves, they getting paid doing nothing. They even changed announcement from "now moders can earn livning making mods" to "now moders can earn some money"  With this split you would have to sell stuff for 1000$(without tax) to get 250$ for fucking paying rent or something. It is a lot 0.25cent swords. And they even expect community to police shit that is their responsibility. God this is so outrageous that I could spit with venom all day.

Also - if Bethesda decides not to make a game modable or mod-tool; would the end result truly be different from most mod-users than if it was behind paywall or steam only? I mean either gobble up their business idea or have no modding tool? When you see the overall quality of vanilla Bethesda games and the longevity they have after modded - Bethesda has no incentive to not support modding. But if they can DRM modding, and put it behind a paywall - that there is a huge incentive to do.  So there's practically no incentive to not do what ever little consumers can do to protest the idea - such as waving pitchforks which we all know "we" don't actually have.  The only weapon we have towards the company is to complain loudly (forum posts, review dumping etc) and not buy. And not buying will ultimately be the same result as having no mods because there's no game. So complaining is the only viable weapon a consumer has.  However, the weapon mod creators have is to not participate and to exercise peer pressure amongst themselves. And that's why mod users target modders who participate in this. And that's where communities such as Nexsus and yes, LL, comes into play. No quality mod creators participating (or very few) means the idea is dead and is dead in a manner in which it can stay dead. Mod creators hold the key here - not Valve, not Bethesda.  And in the end - allowing this will hurt modders as much as it will the mod users, save perhaps a select few who has the quality but for the rest it'll be lousy re-skins and texture replacement and the remainder will go away  So personally - I can accept people waving pitchforks for this because it's long overdue and was something that already needed to have happened when it came to DLC and especially zero-day DLCs. But then "we" basically had no effective weapons at all. But now they move into an area where "we" (or rather you) can indeed make a difference. I'll say again - mod creators have weapons here. That's why people (mod-users) target the participants, feel betrayed by the participants - because it used to be a community (more or less friendly, but that's more a general internet thing these days) and that inherent trust can so quickly go away when money becomes the pivot point   You make a strong case, really nice to see (sincerely not being sarcastic)  And yes ill agree that one scenario could be "mods must be steam installed only" but i would also argue that the opposite is just as if not more likely  The only weapon we have towards the company is to complain loudly (forum posts, review dumping etc) and not buy. And not buying will ultimately be the same result as having no mods because there's no game. So complaining is the only viable weapon a consumer has.  This to me is assuming that people have no where else to turn or as it seem popular to suggest are somehow forced to buy no matter what as if their life depended on it, i'd say where there is a market supply will soon follow, but since the market is currently controlled by big dog Valve its hard to find incentive to try and compete with that, same as trying to compete with Blizzard for the MMORPG or EA for sports games and when it comes to the Skyrim ish form of RPG taking the mod support into account Bethesda is pretty much the only game in town broadly speaking of cause, now if Bethesda where to sudden lose their grip on that part of the market for any reason really i would be willing to bet that someone else would jump in to try and fill gab knowing that in this hypothetical scenario Bethesda lost its market share by doing this and that.  Now i don't think Bethesda have any desire to lose their share of the market altogether, and like any company would they are bound to look at the numbers and conclude that this pay for mods didn't work out as well as they might have hoped it would, (assuming no one buys) and if that lack of sales followed by a series of calm complaints like: Dear Beth I am really concerned about this recent news, as long time fan of yadayada and what it become over the years blablabla i can no longer justify to myself the use of your product sincerely someone something.  Better yet offer alternatives that would make it work if possible. instead of wildly throwing around threats and accusations.  No need for the fire and brimstone to rain from the sky making us all look like raging lunatics.   Â

Arshes Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Been posting on my tumblr warnings about modders who have been putting their stuff up on the steam workshop  Also Maverick who made Helsmyrr Village and Ebonvale put both of his files on Hidden. It isn't in Bethesda's best interest to concentrate the knowledge in only a few. Â However, consider another system that relies almost entirely on paid content. Daz3d now uses Genesis body after the Victoria. Yet there is no shortage of Genesis tutorials. If you visit the forums, some of the sellers freely share their technique. Versh Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 My opinion is that the better response is to compleately ignore that. No petition, etc.  I mean: 'real modders' are people who create mod and upgrate for passion, they could accept donations, but the real objective is to creating something to share with other, that is the basic of a comunity like LL here, and that is what make us strong and united. I've personally become a modder myself to "return" something to the comunity.  The others that do mods for money and stop don't create anything else than the money gain (that is a legit choice, but it's all here, nothing more)  I can understand that "making some money is always good", personally if I had 1€ for every download I'll had gain 12.000€ so far (and my mod isn't one of the most downloaded, What Ashal or Min should say?), but that wasn't my objective, as is not the objective of many other good modder here.  Returning to the topic petition: I said Not needed for a reason -> This is a system doomed to faliure  Think about: I make a mod, a stupid kid repost it on the Workshop at 5€, a second stupid kid Re-repost at 4,99€, a thrid re-repost at 2€ And there's no possible control on all the workshop (how could you say that I'm the one how as really maded that mod? Yes I can report, but how did you verify my reporting?)  It make so much spam that using the system will be almost impossible... and during that we continue to create and share contents FREE here...  The most they publish mods the most people will serch for free mods, and this will increase our comunity (we could gain also some trolls, be sure of this).  In no time the voice will spread and no one will buy mods -> system useless  So It's all about "us comunity" and "us modders".    Just to be clear: I don't judge a good scripter that sell his/her work, this is a free choice, I'm only saying that this thing of the workshop is all smoke, without a real gain for the modders   About all that thing: I think that is only for masking an "engine license rent", they don't want to make other big DLC but they still want to gain something about... So: use a market platform (Steam) to encourage big project, for creating DLC and gain from other's work.  For example all the DD team + Xaz + Ashal create togheter the Big DLC03, 35 hours of gameplay all related to sex in Skyrim The team of Morrowind project recreate Morrowind DLC04 Cyrodill Re-done DLC05  To be honest: good thinking to make money (for beth[75% for every transaction]), but without control and with a crappy engine like the one of Skyrim, No future    Edit: Some fix about grammar and spelling, sorryÂ
dsfargeg222 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I thought Valve was better than doing blatant rent-seeking. This adds nothing back to the community.

...0... Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015    Jeees this is still going?  Valve and Beth tried something, people didn't like it so it didn't work out, end of story.  I mean really what have changed? Other than a few imo brilliant mod authors getting deathtreaths for trying to take their hobby to the next logical step, i don't seem to see much change.  And speaking of that, I started my current career on a hobby level. doing stuff for free, favors here and there, later i was able to make some extra money of it and ultimately turn it into my fulltime job in my own business. i guess i should just eat a bullet right now since it would seem i have committed not only one but two deadly sins, one making a profit from my hobby and two making a business with the goal to make more money. I wonder where the line is between being a business and being an evil greedy business?  And if it's really such a bad thing it will resolve itself all on its own without the need for an army of internet pitchforks, like the saying against censorship goes: Let the person speak and if his words are truly wicked they will in turn insure his his downfall. and if Valves plan is to fuck its customers it don't really matter if the customer bitches about it, but if the customer is not there to be fucked Valve can only fuck themselves.  But but but they owe it to there fans to not be evil and stuff cause we made them what they are blablabla. Alright let's get this straight Valve, Beth, Blizzard, Rockstar, Lord Gabe who ever you like to call god in this matter owes you jack shit, just as you don't owe them anything, they made a product, you bought the product or you didnt, end of transaction something for something etc. If you choose to be a fan and praise them that's all on you.  Picture this if you will: I have been getting milk from a milkman for many years and i have been happy with that milk i have recommended it to friends and family, but one day the milkman decides he going to sell his milk to the company Mighty Milks, because they liked his milk and they want take part of that by offering to bring him into their fold, but now i have to buy my milk at the store instead. but wait how could he do this me? so i confront him yelling SHAME ON YOU! as your loyal customer you owe it to me to continue doing things they way i want you too, because you owe me everything mr milky man! terrified by this outburst the milkman calls his wife and tells her that they might need to cancel the vacation they both so badly needed after years of hard work, but my outburst had done its damage, and the milkman had face that he was never going to fulfill his dream of getting his own cows and plants to produce the milk he really wanted to make while being able to provide for his family. Clearly the milkman is a jackass here, but really the true villains where those bastards over at Mighty Milk trying to enable him to make money of his product to mutual benefits for them.  Moral of the story is: Just because you are a user, consumer and or fan of something or someone does mean that they are now in debt to you in any way, and if you don't like what they are doing now in compare what they used to do. don't use or buy there product, and if you really want what they used to do so bad, go get your own cow and make your own freaking milk, don't know how to make milk?  Well learn!   Sorry if that got a bit ranty, like many others i was shall we say sceptical of this at first and had a lot of questions in my mind, but seeing how the community have responded to this made me cry a little.  Where to start..  #1 You need to understand that this isn't about businesses owing anyone anything. This is about good and bad business. What Valve is doing right now is terrible business.  If you treat your customers like shit, you may not see your business fall in the short term, but it will bite you in the ass later. Customers are what make a corporation, Valve, Bethesda, Rockstar, everybody.  Without customers, these corporations/companies would be nothing.   #2 No-one is saying anything is wrong with someone receiving money for doing what they like doing. The problem is that people are becoming blinded by money. Money is a means, nothing more, that is all it is.   #3 Valve has taken this approach in a terrible way. It doesn't even help that the CEO of the company clearly does not care, but this has been obvious before anyway.     Truly, if you ran a company I would have nothing to do with it, because your attitude to how other people feel is absolutely horrendous.   #1 Okay so Valve made a bad call and they will likely take a fall for it, i believe i made that point already, what i was trying to address was that people are acting as if betrayed, like all their toys were suddenly taken away. Company's making bad decisions sometimes is hardly anything new and yeah i agree it sucks when strikes close to home, but let's not turn a firecracker into a nuclear bomb.  The market will sort it all on it own by not buying the product, this angry mob mentality is unnecessary.  #2  "No-one is saying anything is wrong with someone receiving money for doing what they like doing. The problem is that people are becoming blinded by money. Money is a means, nothing more, that is all it is."  So the action is not wrong but the result of it is? Money can make people do some weird stuff again nothing new, but it will sort itself out by people not buying what is being offered, no matter if its valve or a mod author trying to sell.   Look you are upset i get it and am sorry if i hurt your feelings and ask that you believe me in saying it was not my intention and i don't believe it was Valves either.  but the mental picture i get from this is a bunch of kids sitting on playground complaining that someone build another playground next to them with less features and an entry fee, but instead of playing and enjoying themselves they will not rest until the other playground is torn down.  And just so we are clear, just because i don't agree with you don't mean that i'm against you or saying Valve made a good call, in fact i agree with most people in saying Valve made a bad business decision.  Money may corrupt but so can angry feelings.     Oh like market sorted out DLC? It sorted it so well, that we have DLCs included with DVD!   CDproject still FREE DLC!!! It also not sorted with cash shops, Early Acces or heavy DRM this will not go away it will not stop.  Enough is enough i dont care if billions love it whatever companies shoving up there fucking as and take it with brainless love.  My wallet stay close boycot bethesda and valve(already EA and Ubisoft for years) i don't even care if it helps. I just not jump on greedy bandwagon period.  I see a very Dark future for gaming.  Â
Buddy Christ Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 My opinion is that the better response is to compleately ignore that. I've personally become a modder myself to "return" something to the comunity.  This is exactly why I started my mod. So many people did awe-inspiring mods. I gave out "Thank you"s and sometimes donations, when it was possible. But I wanted to be *part* of this. I wanted to give back. So I made a book mod, the only thing I could come up with and actually pull off, because I am "modding-challenged". Thanks to some members of the community (you awesome guys know who you are ) I was able to expand the mod from just some random books to scripted things. It was the community that allowed me to give back at least a bit for all the great stuff I was able to download and enjoy.  My Mod is nothing special and it has around 2300 downloads here. It was nothing I did to get "the most downloads", it was something I tried for fun. I never did it to compete with all the great mods I have seen here, I did it, because I was inspired by all the great modders to "join the club of giving an experience to others for free".  It has one rating with 5 stars (whooot! And thank you to the person that gave it ) and that is it. But guess what? I had (and still have) fun writing the books for the mod. And if, with more than 2000 downloads, it gave some fun to some people, I am happy. If they liked it, smiled and enjoyed it, I am all but happy. Because I am part of a community. A group of people who like other people's hobby. I am feeling fuzzy when I think about the first day I uploaded my mod and saw that people downloaded it. I was thrilled, when I suddenly had a rating. It could have been 1 star and I would have been proud, because someone looked at something I did and it at least give him/her enough experience in his/her life to give some feedback on it.  And I am glad that my mod would never, ever be allowed on Steam, because I am part of a "sub-culture" (Oh, and even if it was allowed: I would cut off my testicles before asking anyone to pay for it!)

Vykroft Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I read that some modders took down their mods from nexus and other sites fearing someone evil will download them and put them on the steam workshop sale to make profit. Anybody know who are those modders and what mod were taken down? Well, apparently this 3:  http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=431035325&searchtext= http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=431005610&searchtext= http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=430970909&searchtext=  Were stolen from gg77 mods like these ones:  http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/30856/? http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/30534/?  And of course, STEAM disable all the comments on these ¿moods?, because of all the complainants and offensive messages. The thief is still unpunished and about to enter in the lucrative business of "easy modding/easy money"
DoctaSax Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Beth statement right here. I'm sure there's a lot to pick at, but the anti-DRM stance in it is hopeful.

I wouldn't completly say a dark future for gaming.  Competitors will always do the necessary to win and steal consumers. Another developer will shine down upon us a tool to mod and openly mod their game free of charge. The mass will follower and modding will still exist. We just need to push aside any corporations that involve themselves in this tyranny with Valve such as Beth in this case. When bethesda has developed a game for millions of dollars and only 5% of profit is gained, they have no choice but to surrender their way of thinking and provide the gamers with the respect and freedom we once had with them. But they have created a deep backlash upon themselves, and it's a wound that's bound to take many many years to heal.  Unless this is really a April fools joke, Bethesda future lies upon us. Most of us feel like the sheep will follow, anyways.  I wouldn't call it being negative, most petitions get ignored anyways. CEOs care nothing more except more money in their wallets. And by offering a "chance" for the people at the bottom to make a few chump change. Make the deal sound sweet. Ofc most of us don't buy it. It's rigged. It's gimmick. It's a scam. A rip off.  Money talks. And here you have the few who have gotten suckered into it.  Â
Darkening Demise Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Valve just sunk lower than Electronic Arts. Who would've thought that Steam would be worse than Origin. The dark times are truly upon us.
