People who think that putting a price tag on something will "motivate" mod authors to work harder or produce better mods need to watch this video:

In theory, it's not about motivating them to work harder or produce better mods at all. It's about motivating them to work at all, essentially an economic cost-benefit analysis for the modder. If modding makes money, a modder can spend more time modding because that is no longer a period of time where they are not making money. In theory, enough modding income means they could perhaps take some time off their regular job to work on a mod. This would get a mod released quicker or, in some cases, could be the difference between whether or not a mod ever gets released at all, since so many modders simply can't find time due to needing to eat to live.

 

Much like many things, theory doesn't translate into practice. In reality, paid mods under the current situation will never make enough money to accomplish that goal because non-modders get too much of the cut, public sentiment is largely against paid modding, and there's no way to price a mod realistically enough on Steam to get the majority of people to see it as fair. Remember, Skyrim costs $5 right now. One companion was priced the same as the entire game. Skyrim now sits at $20 normally. That's still 1/4 the game's price without a sale on. Even if Skyrim were up for its full $60, is one companion really equivalent to 1/12 of Skyrim? For some people, sure. For most? Probably not. It'll still bring in a bunch of profit for Bethesda and Steam at no real cost to either of them, since there will always be people who will buy things no matter how crazy we may think they are for doing so, but the modders are never going to get enough from this setup to accomplish anything.

The currency we handed out to each other, namely generosity, knowledge, gratitude, mutual help, and the shared fun in creating and playing new stuff, is now "nothing", aka "worth nothing" and is being replaced with money.

 

This is one of the saddest things that could ever happen to a community - replacing every human value we had, with MONEY.

Valve isn't the only one that can hide things that they don't want you to see because I can do the same thing to them and hide the shit that they want you to see so that I can't see it. The mods with price tags Most Popular Mods in the past week paid mod reviews and a few other tabs are not in my workshop. Those were the first things I adblocked. Doubt I will buy anything else from steam or Bethshita.

Not buying another game on steam or any other titles by Bethesda unless undone.  I don't even care.  Hell, not needing to spend money to upgrade my PC on new releases will ultimately save me a lot of money down the road, unless some third party title not supported on steam comes and wins me over.

 

I understand that I'm a mod consumer and have not spent what is likely a ton of time to make something for random strangers, but this will self-destruct and ultimately ruin business for Bethesda as well as the careers of many modders.  They deserve the credit for their works, and if I had some spare money to throw around, I would do so.  Bethesda and Valve do not deserve to profit in any way shape or form from people spending their own personal time to create something they're interested in and were willing to share.  They have developers.  If they want to make money by microtransactions, they best start publishing their own first-party mods.

Call up friends you haven't seen or heard from in a long time, spend more time hunting for better jobs that are actually hiring that you would be happy to do... if you don't have a relationship already now is the time to find one! nobody lives forever afterall so times a wastin! Origin actually has customer support and refunds.  You already allowed Steam onto your PC.

I haven't read all posts so maby someone mentioned it before but think about this :

 

Most Mods that add models or animations are created with ( im quite sure ) a free student licence of autodesk's  3DS Max.

When you take at look at this licence you see that commercial use is prohibited.

 

But worse autodesk will notice one day that someone baked a cake and of course they want a piece of that cake too.

And that means they will sell those student licences or create a new form of licences wich then "can" be bought.

The only thing i don't understand is why haven't they tried it earlier...

You see, I remember a similar argument being deployed back before Steam rose to prominence. Various people opined about how Steam, stood no chance of taking ANY market share. Yet here we. I agree that Origin isn't that good, it lacks any offerings other EA games, yet I am inclined to use it because, (shock horror) I like a rare few games EA are publishers for.... Oh and the freebies. (Syndicate, Theme Hospital, etc.)

 

Hmm although £49.99 for Star Wars Battlefront, I might stick to alternate retailers. For a better price point....

Here's an example, a leading retailer's employee hit an elderly relative with a stock cage, she fell and broke her hip and passed a week later from cardiogenic shock. Dont want to sound too cospirative, but it all seems way too convenient. Valve cant be so stupid, they had to see this will happen. I have a strong feeling this is just a first part of something greater. If you want to conceal something, just piss off people. Then elegantly divert their rallying hordes to some other goal. Funny thing, they will even believe it was their idea from the beginning. And you can end with people burning books in the streets and destroying shops...

It can be seen on Nexus now, it is nice to show disapproval, but one of such mods is making it to Mods of the months. Once you start voting in a quality contest according to your political believe and not the actual quality of the participant... thing will get messy.

I don't enjoy those games anymore not since the makers of those games did x and made me and a bunch of other people mad. Now of course new customers don't know what happened they are still in school sexting on their dirty cell phones and using parents money to buy things they don't know or care what a company did. Eventually everyone in north korea will actually believe that their dear dictator really is GOD and doesn't need to eat or sleep or shit/pee and can climb the highest mountain with a messed up leg no problem! none of them will believe anything anyone from the outside worlds says. Marketing works the same way, get rid of the concerns of the older generations and the money just pours in.

i have been lurking these formus for a lot of time (And downloading and trying some of your mods, they're awesome!). However now that i have read all the things that are going on over the internet, which are splitting the modding community, I can only say thank you to all of you.

 

You, the creators, gave life to Skyrim, making it a game which stands out since 2011. You also gave us, the more humble and ignorant users, new contet which was impossible for us to replicate and make of our own.

 

All i can say now is a big Thank you to all the community which is still staying true at what a mod is: A new content made because you love the game, which you distribute to the community, as the community gives to you -in most of the cases- everyhting it can. Thank you all.

We could all be pirates too but that is not the point or the answer. Not only I don't want to play the companies games because I am not happy about what they are doing I am also not happy to play anything the company makes because when I see their games I just see them instead of any enjoyment I used to get from their games. The enjoyment of their games is GONE now it won't come back just because I can still get the games for free. I am mad like many others at the company for their greed and don't want to support the company in ANY way.

 

If enough people were that mad, that disappointed with gaming it would have a HUGE impact on these greedy fun killing jerks and they would have to dramatically change their business model back to normal. You know, make games and sell games, make expansions and sell expansions get rid of DLC stop making 5000 sequels make something NEEEEEEWWWWW!!!!! I hate playing part 30 of something I just won't do it.
