A little warning to mod creators of non adult mods....

Oh the EU will find some to make more money with you can bet on it.

 

Not only the modders get to be fodder they get to work for next to nothing and get no support have to support their mods all the time and put up with all the complaints. These days thieves have better jobs because when they con someone into buying their stolen stuff they don't have to support and problems the buyer has later. Once they sell something they run away never to be seen by the buyer again! the modders can't exactly do that since everyone knows where to complain to busted mods. So what will happen is that at some point in the future, paid mod content will get valve and other game companies in trouble. They might just decide to drop the whole thing the first time they survive an EU complaint or not. M$ has not left europe and neither has google.

The BBB is just another corrupt govt organization they don't do anything really and if a company gets any kind of complaint against them the BBB will not remove it for a long time or ever. There is a breakdown of communication between BBB and everyone really.

Dark0ne just isn't sucking the right dicks over at Valve/Bethesda.  He'll get around to it eventually, since he's had plenty of experience while in British public school and on those fancy-nancy up-the-butt Greek island vactions he brags about (vacations his members pay for, btw).  Once he gets that squared away he might actually admit he's been in collusion the whole time...and then laugh and ban anyone who challenges him on his dubious morals.  Is the Nexus way.

 

Seriously though, the decision makers over at Value/Bethesda haven't though this through if 'we own mods/you must pay' is their new credo. What they don't understand is the games they release are broken from day-one.  Even after they patch them, they still don't work.  Players fix things and we all know that.  Fast forward to the next Bethesda game and they fuck us as usual.  The console release will be first (even though they know that is a dead end, one time buyer market) and then the PC version will come out.  After that they'll release their broken construction set so we can 'mod with it'.  This is where the ass-fucking will really start.

 

JUST SUPPOSE the new construction set is locked by a DRM and you can only access it while on-line.  How are you going to fix the outdated INIs if they're not on your PC?  How are you going to make esps have multiple masters?  How are you going to mod the esms from DLCs if you don't have access to the configs?  How will you be able to really mod anything?  Look at the configs that came with Skyrim and its CK.  You can't do mods with multiple masters without changing the configs.  The same is true for opening the esms/esp that come with official DLCs.  Without access to those and Bethesda not fixing them (which they never do), modding is fucked.  What I'm saying isn't that much of a stretch.  Look at what Valve/BethSoft is capable of doing to modding thus far in their weasly attempt to control it.  Is what i'm hypothesizing that far off base?  A CK locked by a DRM along with the configs and no way to edit them?  Think SaintsRow3 and BatmanArkham and how those are packed from Steam.  The files don't exist on your PC.

 

FNANTASY LAND I have two solutions; don't buy their shit any more OR go back to the last game Bethesda released that was on a disk (that's FO3) and totally cut Bethesda/Valve out of modding and make content for a game they have no on-line control of.  I mean use every utlitiy available and remake FO3 to whatever playform we want.  Everyone turns their backs on Skyrim, NewVegas and whatever comes after and hammers the shit out of a game and engine Steam can't touch.

The percentages are shite, modders may lose some rights, and there's the possibility of a legal shitstorm where "3rd party DLC" devs would start filing DMCAs left and right.

I think it's a disgrace what the modders have to face at the moment, without any help or assurance from Bethesda or Valve. They get most of the shit with people brigading their pages and whatnot. This fucking outrage culture that is going on at the moment is shameful and not helpful at all. Be angry at Valve and Beth, not the guy who thought he can make a dev-sanctioned buck with his mod and who was probably reassured by their legal team that all is well.

 

The only thing that makes Beth and Valve understand that this whole thing is a disaster, is money. Namely none of it. Don't buy stuff on the workshop, don't encourage their greed and exploitative business practices. The modders that went for this are probably not without blame, but if I were approached to be one of the selected few to get my mods up in a "new and exciting" business model without knowing much about it beforehand, I don't know how I would have reacted. I can't say I've never fallen and been blinded by marketing, so I don't hold others to a higher standard. Something a lot of people that are crying the loudest might want to consider as well.

 

With all that being said, this is a fucking joke on behalf of Bethesda and Valve. If they wanted to divide the modding community and put a wedge in between premium and non-premium modders, they have succeeded. If they want to destroy what the modding community built since Morrowind, this is how you'd go about it.

 

As a final word on this matter: If we see anyone uploading premium content on this site again, we will hand out hefty warnings. If you want to "destroy" premium mods by uploading them here, you damage us, not them. 

And modders face what exactly? Something they signed up for? Something they chose to do? In the case of the modders like xilverbulet (Midas Magic) I have no sympathy because he has pulled every free version of his outdated mod and then proceeded to update his mod to get money.

 

In the case of the few modders like Chesko, I do feel bad for but there are very few like him and also what Valve is doing with his content is a disgrace (IE: Telling him what he can and can't do with it.). 

 

Outrage culture isn't an issue here either, though some of the things being said by people are disgraceful. 

 

Also, not sure why people would upload the premium content here, but I agree that that's bullshit and besides, the Asian modding community will do that themselves so those of you wanting the free paid mods, go bother them. 

 

 

All in all, I think most (not all) modders are to blame just as much here as Valve/Beth because they jumped at it as opposed to being skeptical about it, I mean hell even Dark0ne knew that pay wall mods were coming before Valve contacted him at all and kind of called it.  They also maybe should have researched the Sims modding community a bit and how pay walls affected that community.

 

Then again maybe I'm saying all this and feel the way I do because I did get caught up in the Sims modding pay wall fiasco back in the day and since then have been a firm believer in free mods with a donation option.

It is funny how people would dance as soon as money is dangling right in front of them. Although I have to respect her decision that they will be released free in nexus as well instead of timed exlcusive bullshittery.

Arguing over the split is rather pedantic at this point. Yes, it's slim pickings for the modders. Though at this point I really don't care how much they get. Just too many people are overlooking the elephant in the room, especially on Reddit. Namely, how will mods be made and distributed in the future? They very well could slap drm on the CK as Kendo mentioned, that or all assets could be hosted through some cloud streaming service. Chesko already made a huge stink given that crap he pulled. Hindsight is 20/20, but once you do something like that, you burn bridges. That lost trust among the community is going to take time to be rebuilt. That's reason enough to make it online only, not to mention piracy. Valve once understood why people pirate, but somewhere over the years they've forgotten. Many people, myself included, have also given Valve a pass for far too long. At the end of the day, Steam is just DRM with a friend's list. Maybe PC gaming is going to have to take two steps back to begin moving forward again. Enough people just do not seem pissed off.

I think this is a wonderful advancement in our evolution. My mods on Nexus will always be free. My mods on Steam will be paid.  Do not be too harsh on modders over the coming weeks.  We all need time to adjust.

Actually that's the most discussed thing XD. People have been speculating on the future of bethesdas games and are now not going to buy them(me included).

Ultimate justice, but also pitiable since all they wanted was 25 cents.

 

Also, kudos for all the mod makers who insist that modding is always a hobby and they do it for their self pleasure/leisure and release it to the community because they would like to share their creation, rather than profit anything or everything they make. (I know IM a leech, hush you!)

Maybe it's just my selective vision but I just see as many people claim that modders should be compensated whilst ignoring the issue. The community here has it's ear closer to the ground. This thread just proves it.

Being an asshole is not okay. It is never okay. It doesn't matter what the other person did. Don't like it? Say your piece politely and/or move on. No one, and I mean no one, should ever have to put up with constant threats and abuse of any kind. Not while we pretend to be part of any sort of civilized society.
