(Crap I'm turning into my cousin.) Yeah, you wanna dick around and not do work? Have at it. By all means, don't show up, don't do the work. I don't honestly care. You want to chat with a friend or sleep? Fine, go in the hallway or commons or library or stay home; but bitch don't you fucking do that shit in my classroom. You are not the most important person in the universe and I don't give a flying monkey's nuts about what you want to talk to your friend about and neither do the twenty other people who have to listen to you trying to talk over me while I'm trying to teach. Yeah, you paid to be here (or more likely you got a loan so someone else (often the U.S. taxpayers) are paying for you to be here) but guess what? So did everyone else. You don't get to go around and interrupt my teaching for your own selfish reasons and in the process screw over everyone else as well. My cousin always brings up the Mario guy. He sat in the third row and played Mario on his computer every day. Distracted the people next to him and everyone behind him who could see the screen, at least seven people, in an eight a.m. class, most people were barely awake as it was. If all I did to teach was put on videos and stand at the front of the room looking at my phone all class, would you as a student have a positive opinion of my class? Probably not. Well, guess what? That is how your instructors feel when the students spend more time looking at their phones than they seem to do paying attention to what we are teaching. If you want to spend the next 10 weeks not paying attention to me, fine. Stay Home! I'm going to knock points from your attendance/participation grade for looking at your phone all the time anyway, so just STAY HOME. As long as the work gets done you're going to pass, a&p is only 5%. Weekly attendance is 10 points, homework is 50-100 and the grades are weighted anyway so homework is 50% of the final grade. And no MMR, I'm not trying to take this out on you personally. I'm stuck dealing with some shitty students (there are always a few) and there are good students to go right along with them, but sadly they often don't leave as much of an impression as the assholes do. Sorry, I need to vent about that and there isn't really any point to venting at work because all the other teachers feel the same way and administration doesn't care at all about either us or the students. If it's being actively disruptive that goes against the "as long as you're not affecting other people" part of my argument on "personal freedom" if it's someone in the middle of class with a laptop playing Mario yeah that's disruptive. AKM's stance was strictly against phones though, regardless of their use because phones are bad. Those people "constantly glued to their phone" could very well be writing notes because their handwriting sucks. As someone with dyslexia I had to request permission to use my laptop to take notes for example and if I went back to school now that I'm missing an eye I would most definitely not want to be handwriting notes, if ever available I'd want a digital version of handouts even if I had to print them out done myself in the overpriced library printers. I can understand the frustration, I was a student teacher for a few months to get some college credits, but the argument simply wasn't about disruptive or bad students. AKM just hates phones, either at work or school. Also don't worry about venting, that's what this thread is for.

Looking for anything else is just stupid and a waste of time and resources imo. Then you have talking heads asking why there is recidivism rates. Gee I wonder. -relevant. It's about some twisted fun and how the system is well and truly fucked.
megamantaray Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 Steam just sent me an email with a TRIAL VERSION of Street Fighter V where you get to use all 39 characters and 200 costumes. But it's only available for people who DO NOT OWN THE GAME ALREADY. Spoiler So once again current and past players are getting fucked by another motherfucking re-release. First it was removing the major ways you could unlock characters in-game for free, and now this. Man do I regret buying the game way back when it was just 6 characters in good faith that they wouldn't do some shit like this. It is Capcom though... not surprised just disappointed.
AKM Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 The number of places I've seen around lately who count on people not being overly worried about not getting their penny back when something is $X.99. "That'll be '$X.99'." *Hands over a bill one cent greater than '$X.99'* "(Puts whole bill in cash machine and closes drawer to said machine) Thanks!" Uhm, no. Where's my penny? Last time this happened, they had to get a manager to re-open the drawer. Another time, it was: "Oh, we're out of pennies." Okay, so I'll report this organization for false advertising, then. Yeah, I get it, it's a measly cent, but they add up. Oh, and they definitely add up for the business that sneakily doesn't give people the penny that is legally theirs. Pisses me right off, it does.

Yeah, it's especially annoying because they try to put the whole thing on you. They act as if you're being petty for asking back such a measly amount even though for anyone that adds up over time and asking back the proper change is absolutely rightful. This is why electronic payment is better. And in case that isn't an option, i just prepare the money before going to the counter and make the exact payment. I'm not interested in arguing with people outside and make a scene so i don't give them any chances.

Come on, you know they do that to expand their base. It is hard to get people to buy a game they have no interest in playing, but if you give it to them for free, you may make new fans. Sure it is like selling crack, your first hit is free, but it works. Now if they made it super easy to unlock characters which previous players had to "work" hard to do so, then yes, I would agree that is a foul (I am still pissed off about NGE and CU for Star Wars Galaxies...... I loved that game when it first came out, bugs and all) .
landess Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 We weren't ALLOWED to use calculators in school when they first came out (unless using a scientific calc for advanced math classes). So painful as it was, we had to learn to do basic math in our heads, sometimes writing down steps if the 'calculation' was too difficult to remember all. Fast forward 40+ years and the result of todays kids learning ALL math on calculators (because calculators are always correct) may give kids good 'info' but they don't understand what is happening (general population). So when you give certain change in an effort to make the transaction beneficial to both parties (get rid of that spare change/pennies) they must add that up (in their head) before entering the 'amount tendered'. This is where the results of using calculators in school to do EVERYTHING rears it's ugly head, since they are incapable of doing simple addition. Bill is: $17.83 I give: $20.08 I should get back $2.25 What I get is a confused look...... I have experienced more examples of this than I care to remember. So now because of stupidity, I either give no change, or exact change - jeez!

If I'd known then what I know now..... It is a CYA thing to do. I remember having to make a call on letting a coach (for a youth sports league) be a coach when he had a possession charge from 10 years prior. Fortunately, I had a family member in law enforcement give me the "real" story that he likely pleaded to a lesser charge, the other charge (resisting arrest) was bonded out (he served no time for) and interference with a police investigation (probably a bs charge to make him plead to the possession charge.) I put my son on his team, so just in case anyone found out about it, I could diffuse any anger the parents had about it. Bottom line, with out a sympathetic (or empathic, not sure which applies here) HR person willing to look deeper (yes that law enforcement connection did help) to have a chance. BTW, he is one of the best coaches and has gone on to coach high school varsity.

Season 1 and 2 characters were unlocked by default, and that game cost less than SFV originally did. People who'd had the game from the start and worked to unlock those didn't get anything, they also got their options removed for earning Fight Money to unlock them. Story mode. NOPE! Gone. Arcade mode? Nope. Fight online, level your characters. No other options. This is doing the same. This is another re-release with every character up till now, we don't get a special discounted update btw, as far as I know. That's how it was with Arcade Edition, I'm assuming that's what it's gonna be like now.

I have experienced more examples of this than I care to remember. So now because of stupidity, I either give no change, or exact change - jeez! One of my instructors is old time Air Force. When he went through Flight Engineer school, they had just started with calculators the class before. Calculators were not to be trusted and they made sure to run some equation through them that hit all the number and symbol keys before trusting that they would work as advertised. The man still has his slide rule, but can't remember how to use it now. As for giving someone more than the bill, so that the change will result in an even number, I did that in the past, but have long since given up on it for exactly the reason you mention. Kids, and even adults these days, can't do a thing without their computers. You know those electronic beepers on crosswalks in big cities that let the blind know when it's safe to cross? It's so bad with handheld screens that some places are doing it due to people who have perfectly good eyes being blind to what's around them, because they have their faces buried in their electronics. Recently listened to a Redit about some kid who blamed himself for the death of a girl in his class. HE saw a break in the traffic and crossed, SHE had her face buried in electronics and got hit by a truck. He blames himself as if he'd murdered her. Sigh.

Being allowed to use a calculator kinda assumes you already know the material and can do the Math in the proper order and get the right result, the calculator just running it faster than you'd have to in your head. I wasn't allowed to use one in most cases, and when I was it had to be a basic one that way what I was learning was reinforced but you could still move along at a relatively fast pace. I don't know how it is now, I have been out of high school for a long time, but back then it wasn't a crutch it was just a small aid to make things go faster. I'd mention how many obtuse and shitty ways teachers used in order to explain something relatively simple, and how much more complicated their backwards-ass ways of explaining even something like long Multiplication became (like the "Box" method) but getting into the education system in the US would open up an infinite can of worms and that's just no good. Insert some useless grumbling about how phones are bad and kill people who were probably already stupid enough to die regardless and would've been distracted by something else. Some fun stuff about "zombie pedestrians" I found while preparing for the inevitable bullshit about them and phones causing crashes. Also this isn't directed at you or anything. I just like tiny text sometimes.

Truth be told, though, I'm pretty rusty at doing calculations in my head, lol.
megamantaray Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 Not being allowed to drive for a bit cos I'm missing an eye is pretty reasonable, I gotta get re-tested to see if I'm capable of driving again and I gotta go through insurance and stuff, what's not reasonable is bus fare and how disgusting it is inside one. I hadn't been in a bus for a while, a public bus that is. School buses even longer. Anyway, it's so dusty sticky and gross, maybe it's cos it was a hot day and it's Florida but goddamn. Sitting down on an uncomfortable plastic seat that you can feel through jeans is yucky but maybe I'm just entitled/privileged like that. I also wasn't fond of people leering at me but whatever, it's not an issue unless someone acts weird. Look all you like, bud.

In fact I think I got off easy cos no one even sat by me except for 2 of my many rides today and one was a college student who clipped every single one of her nails with her teeth. Probably testing today, I hope it went well. I recall some really close encounters when I was in college though, I had to use the bus for a 7am class and I also had some night classes that ended at 9, so fucking scary. Had to do that for a few semesters so about a year and a bit. That was my major worry today, I am not menacing looking by any means, so I was pretty antsy but it went well otherwise. Biggest thing was the sticky seats, one of the buses did have "carpet" seats though but if you've ever pat those you know you get Type 9 Diabetes and Stage 50 Cancer from doing that so I stood for that one.
