Guess This Location.

Here's one that may be tough, especially to get all the bonus questions.

This unnamed henge site lies between a named cave (hint its a quest location: bonus question name the quest that send you there) and a named settlement, what are they?

536639006_enb2018_08_1113_57_11_93.thumb.jpg.1f9f668edc99ce1a3320954f12867b13.jpg

The site has long fascinated me because it hints at several mysteries.  One being why was a more recent shrine constructed at what appears to be a far older henge site?

Bonus question:  To whom is the new shrine dedicated?

The henge site is very near a nearly obliterated Nordic ruin that may be nearly as old.

Bonus question:  What location can appear on top of the nearby Nord ruin (hint: its not always there)?

Another thing I find interesting about this site is that if you stand in front of the largest stone with your back to it you realize the site is oriented to face directly east.   If you journey on that line east you eventually (after going quite a distance and past a mountain) come to another unnamed henge site composed of only four small stones that form a perfect compass (each stone is oriented N, S, E, W).  This suggests that the two might be related, perhaps being located on a ley line.

Last bonus question:  The other henge site is near a famous location, what is that location?  Extra credit for getting a screen shot of the other site.

If this does indicate a ley line, it might ought to be called a dragon line because there are at least 3 dragon mounds located on or very near the line.  Makes you wonder if Bethesda planned all that... or I'm just staring at the map way too much.  LOL

Look at me being all ejumucational ?

To recap...

Name the cave

Name the settlement

Bonus 1:  Name the quest

Bonus 2:  Name who the shrine is dedicated too

Bonus 3:  Name what can appear on the Nord ruin

Bonus 4:  Name the famous location near the 2nd henge site

Extra credit:  Screen shot the 2nd henge site.

Here on planet Earth such things are generally Sun-related, being either East-West or NW-SE and NE-SW which is the two solstices. They were used for, among other things, diurnal

cross-country navigation in an age with no road signs.

The image is just SE of Worikstead near Gjulkar's Monument, Swindler's Den and Broken Fang Cave. Shrine to Mackintosh?

I believe Grey Cloud may be referring to this one.:

ScreenShot154j.thumb.jpg.3732ffebbaeb7f3a14985f1c14725fe1.jpg

Which is the shrine of Akatosh that overlooks Worikstead (I was saving this for a later day).

But EinarrtheRed is referring to this shrine of Zenithar which is roughly in the location that Grey Cloud gave.

Yup. I could only think of Akintosh and Arkay. I knew it wasn't Arkay so I decided to quit while I was behind and go with Akintosh. ?

Correct on the settlement and cave.  Incorrect on the shrine.

Yes, most henge sites in the real world were actually either astronomical or tombs or both.  But a lot of people believe the Celts built them marking the presence of ley lines (or dragon lines as the Chinese call them) and related them to magic which fits very well in Skyrim.  The design of this henge site likely would have been one marking the solstices and would have been important to agriculture.  The fact its almost directly adjacent to what looks to be a very old Nord site that is flat (with lots of open ground around it), may have been an ancient Nord farming community.  The layout suggest that there would have been a central "key stone" or dolmen either with a hole in it, or a group of stones, so that light would shine on a specific spot on the largest stone (the one where the shrine is now) to indicate when the solstices were occurring.  The central stones are now missing, with only a rubble pile remaining, perhaps having been deliberately destroyed at some point.  The design of it might also indicate the presence of a passage tomb.

I did a lot of research on this area in part because or my interest in the oddness surrounding Rorikstead (and there appears to be a LOT of oddness that never got developed) and also for a custom follower I was working on who would turn out to be something of an archaeologist; so you not only ended up with a new follower if you could recruit her (by helping her with her project) but she would also lead you to several new tombs and ruins that I was going to add.  Another of my epic projects I never got around to finishing for lack of scripting and quest building skills ?

To recap:

The cave is Swindlers Den (credit Grey Cloud)

The settlement is Rorikstead (credit Grey Cloud)

Bonus question 1:  What quests takes you to the cave?

Bonus question 2:  The shrine is dedicated to Zenithar (as is another nearby shrine) (credit Psalam)

Bonus question 3:  What can appear on the nearby Nordic ruin?

Bonus question 4:  Name the famous location near the 2nd henge site?

Extra credit for screen shots of the 2nd henge site.

The ghost from the Lover's something or other quest. Lost Love?

A lot of people believe things were built by aliens. I study ancient cultures, history, metaphysics and anything else ancient. An international trade network needed a reliable navigation method. You can't use the stars during the day.

1. Swindler's Den is commonly associated with one path of "In my time of Need," It is usually the quest marker for the Dawnstar blacksmith favor - find a copy of "Night Falls on Sentinel."

2. -

3. I have no idea. I ran through all the vanilla general quests (Main, Companions, Mages, Thieves', DB, Civil War and Daedric) and drew a blank. Are you sure you haven't been playing with a particular mod so long you just think it's vanilla Skyrim?

4. Best guess is that it's Ragnvald (due east, through a mountain and near a Dragon mound).

Posted

Correct on the quest, it is In my time of Need.  (Curved swords.... cuuuuurved... swords.  ROFL)

3.  Positive, something from vanilla Skyrim does indeed show up there under the right conditions.  Do I need to give out a hint?

4.  Nope, go due east from the 1st henge site, over a mountain and through the plains past giants and cairns you go, there's a halted stream and some old towers and, oh look, on a hill you're there!  (And near a VERY famous location, like, literally EVERYONE has to go there) ?

Score is 2 -2 Grey Cloud and Psalam... two questions still unanswered... there could still be a 3 way tie!  I'm biting my nails.

First you should know that with Live Another Life there is no place EVERYONE has to go. I suspect that you're referring to Whiterun though (Halted Stream Camp etc.) so I take it the henge is on the hill near the Shrine of Talos that Elisif sends you to as her favor. Although for the life of me I couldn't find anything henge-like around there.

You aren't talking about this one?

Would that be called "henge" site (pardon my lack of english language) ?

So the famous monument isn't Gjukar's? And it isn't the ghost of Ruki (Book of Love quest)?

I think I'm getting one of those lemming exploding brain turns. You don't get any of this with Total War Rome 2.

Looks like Psalam is locking it up with 3!   Correct, the thing that appears on that Nordic ruin is the Imperial camp during the Civil War if you side with the Stormcloaks (they appear after the Battle of Whiterun... and for the record I HATE modding anything related to the civil war!).  An hey, lets face it if you have played Skyrim and you haven't been to Whiterun... what the hell????  LOL

I believe Psalam has the right location but technically he didn't find it yet... so half credit for the win? ?

Close but no cigar Worik, wrong stones but you're in the right area!

Nope and nope Grey Cloud, not nearly far enough east (and that's not directly east from the henge site either).

Its four small stones that form a perfect compass, each one is aligned with N, S, E and W.  The 2nd henge site if virtually unknown, I'll admit I missed it for years until I started looking around for a place to build a player home (i.e. Stone Bluff... something else I need to finish one of these days) and there it was.  Later it turns out Camelworks had found it as well and discusses it in one of his Curator videos on Whiterun (he even has video of the location).  Then later I realized the 1st henge site points almost directly at the 2nd one and... gears started turning in me wee lil head.

So there ya go.  Thanks for playing!

So nobody gonna guess Psalam's location?

Tomorrow I'll have a fun easy one with a B-52's reference. ?

But I must consider this mystery still unsolved ?

Even in broad daylight I can't see the elephant nearby.

Anyone who gets bored (not anyone stiff as a board) can still take a shot at post 4676. It was on the top of the page (188) when I typed this.

1) Name the three circled structures.

2) Name the structure at which I must be standing to take the picture.

And, if it's not TOOOOOOOO boring I have a third picture in the series.

Wouldn't be a nordic ruin by any chance? Just guessing. ?

I'm struggling with the location as I don't have snow and Meridia and Azura are interchangeable for me. There again, so are the rest of them.

Edit. Blue circle = Azura. Red = College.  Don't recognise Green. Position possibly Frostflow Lighthouse. Altar of Xrib(?) involved somewhere?

Though I am not bored, but I missed that we have an unsolved one :classic_blush:

1.Azura, Collge Of EgomaniacsWinterhold, Yngvild

2.Though I am not in my game currently, you should be near the Nightcaller temple. Slightly north. There should be a usable slope at it's eastern side, which leads to a little plateau. A good vantage point.

Okay, you all have the three locations that can be seen. Spot on. But from where was this picture taken? (All guesses so far have been incorrect).

I was going to say that the third in the series doesn't have a nordic ruin but I just realized that would be a lie. However, that's not the focus of the picture.

So, you must be standing on top of the light house in Dawnstar.

I always forget my modded game. Trees are bigger for me and I can't see Azura from there. Barely the college. :classic_blush:

Almost forgot I promised to post a fun one today, got busy with a build project and lost track of time!

Okay, in 1989 the B-52's had a hit song about a little old place where we can get together.  This ain't the place but if you aren't careful about who you "love" you could end up here anyway.  Name the location and the song.
