Gamestar.de Article: Profession - Sex Mod Developer
by Dennis Kogel, 31.12.2018 08:00

They bring the sex into play - These modders do what developers do not dare

When it comes to games, the camera turns black with shame. That's not enough for a large community of modders. They have characters in Skyrim, Fallout, and The Sims have explicit sex.

A romance that could soften even after decades the hearts of the mightiest warriors: The Dovakhiin and Lydia. In Skyrim, the hero meets a woman who becomes a servant, then a companion, and finally a spouse.

As a Huscarl, Lydia travels the skylight with the hero dragging blades, armor, gold, and prey, plunging into battle as giants swing their clubs and dragons fill wide ravines with fire. Lydia is always at the side of the hero. And then, someday, it feels like more.

Lydia, the steely-looking North woman, is not a simple companion, not an ordinary character, she's a friend, a partner, a ... lover?

With an amulet of Mara in hand, the hero of Himmelsrand embarks on a new adventure. He tells Lydia about his feelings and asks for her hand. She says yes. And then? Then Skyrim shatters romantic feelings like a giant slashes a mud crab.

With the marriage ends in any romantic crackle and replaces it with brutal banal everyday life. Every day, Lydia cooks a meal, lives in a house and buys players prey. We never see fingers that touch each other tentatively, heartfelt hugs, passionate kisses. In short: we see nothing. The Dovakhiin and Lydia, they could be roommates as well.

Skyrim is there like so many games. When it comes to tenderness, physicality, sex, the most mature games become chaste. Hunger, coldness, injuries, blades that crash together, bullets that break into ailing wood: all of these simulate and show games in the greatest detail. But during sex, the simulation stops. You can have a rendezvous with dozens of NPCs - but before it gets down to business, an abrupt blackblind rips you out of the world.

Only very few (large) games venture into intimate terrain, for example. But just this void wraps a whole community of players and players. They want more. They want it to work. Right to the point. And there are people who like to serve them: modders.

There has long been a modder community that has come to bring sex into play. And they do not stop, not in front of Lydia, not the brave Sims, not even in front of Fallout's radioactive wasteland.

The modder who earns 15,000 euros a month with sex

In Sims there is no sex, there is Woohoo. And Woohoo have adult Sims under the covers. When a naked member peeks out, it is immediately pixelated. Except when you use the mod. Then Sims have sex everywhere.

In the shower, on the kitchen counter, in the toilet, in the park, on the beach, on the couch, on the floor, and, yes, sometimes in bed. They sleep together in all imaginable positions and in all possible constellations.

Good birthday parties become orgies and walks in the park are interrupted by copulating neighbors. Everything is visible. Erect penises, hard-nipples, teetering breasts, bare butt, spurting body fluids.

The classic conversation menu of The Sims is extended in the mod to a lot of sex options. For a lot of people that's just the Sims they always wanted.

Wicked Whims has been downloaded over three million times to date. For example, so that the mod is developed further. Behind it lie a single developer - and an accident.

"I installed security cameras and alarm systems. This can be dangerous because you have to climb up everywhere ... and I hurt myself, "says Wicked Whims developer in an interview about the Discord voice chat. "I was not fired or anything, but it was difficult with the injuries in the job. So I quit. "

The man we talk to is called Turbodriver. His real name, his exact age and his origin, he would not betray. It is clear that he lives somewhere in Europe, he is between 20 and 30 years old, he speaks fluent English and 2016 he suddenly has no job and a lot of time. "So I had all this free time," says Turbodriver, "and then I see: this sex stuff is pretty popular."

The developer understates. The "sex stuff" is not only popular, it is extremely successful. While big platforms like Steam are having a hard time with sex games, and in some cases are not even offering them for sale, a vibrant underground scene of sex gamers is flourishing on the net.

Sex mods have hundreds of thousands of downloads, on the crowdfunding platform Patreon a text adventure about sexy aliens collects nearly $ 20,000 a month, and new projects are constantly appearing. Turbodriver sees his chance.

From Minecraft to sexual intercourse

"The Sims 4 had been out there for two years," says the modder. "And it still had no official sex content. So I first looked for mods and found a lot: sex animations, nude patches, this and that. "

Turbodriver sees many, different mods and a problem for users. The many different mods are confusing and could overwhelm new users. So he sits down to the one big sex mod that unites everything.

"I just wanted to try it. And after a few months, I made it. "On June 26, the first official version of Wicked Whims will be online. "Voilà!"

It was not as easy as Turbodriver sounds. The man who installed security cameras before his steep career as a sex mod developer did not just come to modding. He had years of experience.

"I've always wanted to create games, even as a kid," says Turbodriver. As a teenager, he made small games with special software. "I had no idea about coding. I have not even searched for tutorials, but just started and tried stuff. It was all pretty primitive." That changes with Minecraft.

"I was obsessed with Minecraft and mods were huge for this game, so many people made so many mods that are good examples, and for a few years I just made Minecraft mods, just for fun, I never took any money with them. And that was when I also started coding, developed my own programming style and really learned the basics. "

Today, Turbodriver can live off modding. Wicked Whims he develops constantly. Constantly new animations must be installed and new functions developed. He works not only on sex, but on more complex relationship models for the Sims.

Meanwhile, he even employs one more person to help him manage the huge community. His girlfriend, a Sims fan, supports Turbodriver testing new features. "I never thought I'd do sex stuff, it just turned out that way. But that really means a lot for me. I'm finally doing something with my life that I really like. "

The mod godfather

If there is one person to whom Turbodriver owes its success, then it's ashal. He founded the platform where the most important sex mods can be found on the net. Also, Ashal does not want to make his real name, age and provenance public.

Since 2011 Ashal operates the forum, at that time still primarily as a discussion platform for sex mods for the Skyrim predecessor. For a long time, LoversLab has been the site for SexLab, Ashal's own great Skyrim sex mod.

But today LoversLab is much more. It's the first stop for modders who bring sex into games. Here the community discusses the latest versions, asks for help and feedback and finds downloads for Skyrim, The Sims, Fallout, even for otherwise rather unsexy strategy games, such as Stellaris mods. Most of the interlocutors for this article can be found here.

But Ashal just does not want to talk to us. We respect his wish, but we still have to write about him. His role in the community as operator of the main forum and creator of one of the most popular Skyrim mods is just too central.

The reason why Ashal does not speak to journalists is an article from the British magazine PC Gamer, "The article made odd conclusions about me," Ashal tells us in Discord Chat.

The article deals with the many questionable mods that can be found on LoversLab. Mods that let the Skyrim hero rape his opponents or allow him to have sex with all sorts of monsters and animals. In short, acts that are punishable in the real world (at least in Germany).

Also the spreading of (real) pornography with this content is partly forbidden. The spread of animal pornography, for example, is punishable by up to three years imprisonment, not to mention the problem of child-like representations.

Sure, a Skyrim mud crab is not a creature that the Animal Welfare Association is working for, and anyone who rapes a Khajit bandit as Dovakhiin with Mod SexLabDefeat does not commit a real life crime. But that these mods cause different feelings than most sex mods, is not surprising.

In the popular Geekfeminism Wiki, for example, the verdict on the LoversLab-Fourm is clear: it trivializes rape, is misogynist and sexist. Ashal is confronted with these allegations in the article.

He found these questionable contents "extremely uninteresting," but one of the cornerstones of the community is just "no kink-shaming" - no one is convicted for his fetishes, his sexual preferences in games. And that also applies to content such as zoophilia, necrophilia and rape.

Storytelling in the sex mod

Also Turbodriver has always to do with this tightrope walk. "I would never do anything illegal," he says. But things that are quite illegal in real life have found their way into Wicked Whims.

For example, the mod makes incest relationships between relatives possible or allows teen-age sims to sleep with older Sims. We're talking to Turbodriver: "Yes, incest is definitely one of the most questionable contents of the mod," he says.

"I want to emphasize: I did not add this content because I wanted to live out some twisted fantasies, but to give my players more options."

And to forestall the competition. Because other popular mods were specifically offered only for incest relationships. But Turbodriver wants to offer the ultimate sex mod for The Sims 4, so he has the feature built in, he tells us.

Turbodriver expresses his personal views above all through game mechanics. Incest and sex with teenagers is shown in a standard options menu, you have to activate it yourself and then quickly realize: "Incest always leads to negative reactions in other sims, because it is always the deviation from a norm," explains Turbodriver.

"When parents see how adult Sims have sex with teenagers, they do not respond well. That's storytelling for me. "And while players are always demanding new, more extreme content, Turbodriver has its own limits:

"Rape has no place in my mod. I do not touch on this topic and I would be very unhappy if anyone thought I was playing down sexual violence."

What is fetish? What is game mechanics? What is simulation? And what should not be part of a game? These questions are a hot topic in the sex mod community.

Modders are nervous when approached on these topics. They retreat, like Ashal, or answer only evasively. It should be discussed more openly in the sex mod community. This is the story told by another modder.

The hot coffee scandal

One of the most famous sex mods in the world is not a real mod: Hot Coffee for GTA: San Andreas. The "mod" unlocks a sex minigame. With rhythmic keystrokes, hero CJ can have sex with certain women in the game. By pressing a button, the camera angle can be moved.

The scandal: The mini-game did not pack lecherous modders into the 2004 released game, but development studio Rockstar North itself. All animations and graphics for playable sex were already included in the game folder, which was for the PC as well as the console version of the game , The mod consisted only of rewriting a single bit in the game code to activate the mini-game.

This created a controversy to which even ex-US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (then Senator) expressed. She called for stricter age controls for games. An 85-year-old woman then sued Rockstar for buying the game for her 14-year-old grandson and was not educated about sexual content in the game.

San Andreas was removed from stores in the US. Rockstar had to bring a new version without Hot Coffee in the trade. In Europe, on the other hand, the controversy had little effect. Here was GTA: San Andreas released from 18 and the sex accordingly no problem.

How LGBT modders experience the sex mod community

"I'm really fucking gay. I can not say otherwise. "We chat with Discord about a man called The Bottomhood of Steel here. He also does not want to appear with a real name in this article.

For the sake of simplicity, we abbreviate his pseudonym - a rather dirty fallout word joke - as "TBOS". This developer is recommended to us by a prominent fallout modder.

TBOS is gay and part of the big fallout sex mod scene. He creates male fetish clothes and figures for Fallout 4. And he has a problem with this scene.

"I want to be honest: most mods are aimed at hetero-men."

The statement is easy to confirm. For a look at the most popular mods on LoversLab enough. Most of them miss huge breasts for female characters whose physics can safely be described as "Jello-like".

"Bikini armor" is not a joke of game development, but explicitly desired. Sex positions are seemingly inspired by porn. Same-sex relationships? Especially only in a constellation.

"Well, of course you can argue that there are lesbian animations," says TBOS, "but we all know they're there to please men, not necessarily lesbian women."

And anyone posting other content is not always welcome: "I've heard a lot of horror stories from other people chased out of the community for posting content that this core audience did not like."

TBOS has not been intimidated by it so far. His mod BodyTalk for example, is a special male player character. The secret: "This body has an erectile penis!"

That's not so easy. Many mods like to trick. For example, by replacing the entire figure in the background or by creating an erect penis object.

"My goal was not to put erect penises in Fallout," he says. "There are not so many things for male figures as for females." That's what TBOS wants to change. In addition to erect penises, he also simply works on new clothes for Fallout 4: denim vests, lace-up boots, military jackets, beanie hats.

The clothing looks professional, at least as good as the models of the fallout developers themselves. TBOS is anything but a professional. "I do not do anything professionally with computers," says TBOS. "I just want to be trained as a beautician."

But graphic design has always appealed to him, so he taught himself, he says. In the beginning just to be able to use his favorite hairstyle from in Fallout 4 too.

Now it offers men more attractive fashion in the radioactive Wasteland. And give them erect penises.

How it goes for the mods

One thing makes our tour of the sex mod scene clear: The non-adult mods have come to stay. They have a valued audience in the millions and developers who are passionate about sex in games. Even if it does not actually make you look at constantly naked bodies.

"Nudity and sex, by the way, are not that interesting," Turbodriver, the Sims modder, tells us in an interview. This is similar to most of the modders with whom we have spoken.

Above all, they find the challenges of getting sexual content in games in which sex was not intended exciting exciting. They personally find other things hot: "I like context," says Turbodriver.

"I personally do not find sex in Skyrim particularly stunning.. There are a lot of animation issues. But there are so many stories! The stories add new quests and depth to the characters, and it's really fun. You're starting to really like these characters".

That is significant. Because another thing becomes clear when you look at popular mods: Building hot animations into games is a challenge that modders master.

But sex, tenderness, and love, but to simulate the complex, exciting processes that they are in real life, games like Fallout or Skyrim are far from that.

Maybe sex mods are at least a start - and a clear signal to big-team development teams. As long as games leave space for sex and love, modders and modders will fill them with their own content.

That does not have to please everyone. This is clearly shown by the controversies surrounding LoversLab, as well as TBOS 'criticism of the scene. The mod community is there like the mods themselves: "work in progress", a process.

And an open invitation to join in and create the content that you think is beautiful, erotic and important.

I think they did a decent job trying to stay objective rather than dramatized/sensationalist with their article, but I also feel they only touched the surface of things. I think if they asked a few users of such mods, they might get closer to the source of what it is about these mods that makes them so great.

For example, the mention the really horrible mods like those that involve rape, bestiality/monsters and all that... And I would agree, that these are awful things, but just in the real world they  happen. Now, I don't get off on the imagination of a certain militant group in the east gathering women and abusing them. In real world situations, I find such actions absolutely appalling! However, in the confines of a work of art, be it a video game, movie, comic book, you name it, i'm alright with it, as no one is actually getting hurt..

I feel that common people, who see these, experience an unreal amount of empathy ( maybe even an unhealthy amount! ) for things that aren't even real to being with. I feel they are in the same camp with the people that were appalled by games like DOOM or Call of Duty or any other violent game..

Getting back on topic a bit; concerning the rape mods and whatnot: A lot of times these mods add story and interaction where there otherwise simply wouldn't be any. If it happens to your character, and they survive it, it can add motivation for revenge. A lot of these mods have single handedly led to some of the greatest gameplay and story arcs i've probably experienced.

In TES IV Oblivion, I made a female character that had little to no combat skills. She was an ordinary citizen, just a bit of hand to hand, maybe some possible childhood experience with a bow. I used a few mods to add some odd jobs she could do, as well as give some motivators to do things and go out in the world to participate like needing to sleep, eat, drink, etc.  Being a dancer and waitress at the bar wasn't cutting it, the men were very touchy, and she got tired of being propositioned for sex. She didn't want to stoop that low.
In comes a job opportunity with the black horse courier. She could make more gold by running messages and packages and the like, but there was danger. She spent her coin on some training, a decent dagger, and some supplies, and signed up for a job delivering to Anvil. Just head west, simple enough.

Lo and behold, ambushed by Bandits. They lie to her about paying for safe passage, take her coin, and still wanted more. she puts up a hell of a resistance but was just too outnumbered to deal with them. They of course, take their share of her, passing her around. A few days go by, and some one offers to buy her, and they accept the deal. The buyer takes her on a route through the forest and runs into some goblins, which kill him. Quickly, I have her make a run for the nearest road, and thankfully there is a guard that sets her free of her bonds!  Naked, covered in dirt and blood, with nothing but boiling hate in her heart, I have her trek back through the woods, sneaking, and find the goblins from before, her captor leaving a few of them dead, she takes an iron bow, clothing, arrows, a few weapons, and makes her way back to the bandits from before.

Systematically, in the night, she picks them off one by one, sniping and luring them into the bushes of the forest. with an axe, she takes their heads as proof..
Finally, she shows up at Anvil. No longer a regular civilian. Battle hardened. Her armor and weapons dented, red with with blood. If the NPCs had better AI, they might have mistook her for some kind of barbarian raider. She turns the job in, and gives the heads to the guard for their bounty.

So, if you read all that, tell me, are there any other games that happens? This is what modding freedom is all about, some of the greatest gameplay i've ever experienced, are from mods featured here at Loverslab. In the end, so long as no actual person is being harmed, I don't see the problem. We shouldn't police people for thought crimes.

Wow! I must take another crack at Oblivion mods, it's been ages since I've tested the sexual waters there although plenty stories like that I have for Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Fallout NV. In answer to your rhetorical question, no other games than those are you allowed to have such unique and interesting gameplay in! I remember when the Oblivion modding scene was bigger, it blew my mind how the various mods interacted in ways no single modder intended, creating "emergent gameplay" of a kind never seen before, at least not by me.

To the article, I agree with you wholeheartedly. No journalistic article has yet gotten to the core issues. We are able to distinguish between evil acts in a game versus evil acts in real life. Many other people have difficulty doing so, and are therefore often horrified by what happens in-game. I'd like to see an article in the near future that's written from a psychological standpoint by a psychologist or someone else who can shed expert light on this. The light of science is often far softer than the light of public opinion, because knowledge has a way of banishing the demons.

Wow I didn't read anything about rape culture and patriarchy. Or how being a fucking white male makes me the root of all evil like.....well I'm not sure if I can say his name but you should know him if you seen any left wing nutjob videos/twitter posts/articles. This is definitely a foreign (Non American) article. Too bad you can't get a US journalist to be like this.

Seems to be a well written article. Not bad. Of course, Germany had to create a label for everything - God beware the day that people had to enjoy a product, and understand it while doing so, instead of knowing perfectly well what is to expect before they even consider using the product.

Turbo makes 15grand a month? Way to go, buddy. You earned it. Thanks for all the effort!

That, of course, goes to all the modders here in this "sex mod community"! Yay! You have been labeled!

Why am I not surprised it would be a non-American media source that took an objective, balanced stance about sex?

I agree that rape mods are horrible, but I know someone who was raped and seen the long-term effects that has. I don't really agree with bestiality mods being that bad simply because I've studied human history and anthropology, albeit on an amateur basis, and seen many references of it across history and cultures up to modern times. But that's a discussion for another thread.

We need more balanced articles like this. No partisan bias, no editorial disguised as news, just simple and honest reporting.

many say sex, rape, slavery and violence in the game have no influence!
I say shit, even a flight simulator has had a negative impact on the world!
without this game, this would never have happened.

furthermore, there are unstable teens and also adults, who accumulate more and more frustration, they mainly play ego shooter and then when this frustration discharges, then there are mass murders (Rampage).

About rape and slavery in a conventional game, no word from me, I would regret it! :classic_wink:

I pay my respects to the 'Mod Godfather'

It takes some balls to sustain a platform many of us tend to take for granted. If LL disappeared tomorrow, the world would be a smaller place.

I was somewhat dismayed at the articles reference to virtue signalling within our ranks in regards to the LGBT movement. While I may not partake, as a firm believer in our 1st amendment rights, and my own beliefs in a consenting adults environment, it saddens me to see a backwards trend in cultural acceptance of something which we have no obligation to be a part of anymore than being a (insert ANYTHING here). My only concerns are with children, and their exposure to knowledge which is in general, too complicated for true understanding until they've lived long enough to have an educated grasp of the situation.

Hopefully, I'll never see anyone entering the community with a bias which disrupts the harmony, delicate as it may be, of the main thing which brings us together.

I'm *not* surprised that German press treats mature issues maturely, but also *completely* surprised that the English language press doesn't attack LoversLab/Nexus for promoting <insert ISM of the day> or worse.

I frankly don't know how we all escape the all scrying eye of the neo-puritanical Left.

Why isn't Kotaku writing article after article decrying our moral turpitude?

I've thought about this, and I think the answer is very simple

I'll bet they have a LL mod or two hidden on their load orders ;)

Nah gaming """journalists""" don't really play games. Installing mods would be too complicated for them and that's why there are few to no articles about modding. The only article I could imagine they write is how installing mods needs an easy mode.

That's something that is actually different in germany/Europe. Here they do complain a lot (more) about violance in games than in the US. I know you've had your share about games creating school shootings/violance but afaik not as much as we did. See also the point in the article that GTA didn't have to be censored here when they found sex content: it already was age restricted to adults only. Even titles like C&C were kinda censored, they had to change the color of blood green so you wouldn't think you're killing humans. Yes, those 5 pixel things called soldiers had to get their blood green. So... we do have our share of stupidity, but i'm still kinda glad sex isn't considered worse than violance.^^

Not even in politics, here people are actually mad about politicians who started wars.

Ze Germans have Zeir own Deutsche adult game modding sites. I doubt they would care much about Loverslab, especially when they learn that you gotta pay to GOP for your porn now.

Also Mexico still not paying. Ay, caramba!
