we will be in for a serious culture shock

*ahem*.. when you already know everything 'new' or 'changed' is going to be FUBAR, there is no more "shock" factor- culturally or otherwise. One actually expects it.

Everyone isn't us though. We saw it rise from nothing, become something, other's tried to imitate it and most of us ignore those imposters.

I'm thinking mostly of those whom have had it in their lives as long as they can remember. Not realizing the flood of anti-consumerism it holds back.

FUBAR? Yeah - life is Fubar. I remember Sports before there was legalized sports gambling, The list is long - Prime time TV before Soap Operas took it over.

This is all balanced by the wonderful advances in technology, but those advances are back to a crawl - exploiting what exists. The microchip/etc. was already made.

You mean when it was illegal and was controlled by the Mob? And when U.S. prime time television gave us gems like Dragnet, Adam 12, Barnaby Jones, Bonanza, Cannon, Mannix, Magnum, P.I. and loads of other lame, boring crap? For every The X-Files, there was probably 20 Murder, She Wrotes,

i'd gladly take murder she wrote over anything on tv today (but diagnosis murder is a much better option)

personally i think the X-Files was the "boring crap".

To each, as they say, their own.

I mean SPORTS. The gambling part is mentioned as a bookmark in time. One's focus determines their reality.  :D

There has been gambling on sports as long as I can remember (and I believe we are approximately the same age). I don't see how legalizing it has changed sports. The NCAA colleges and universities having to pay "student" athletes has had more impact on sports in the U.S. than legalizing gambling has, in my opinion.

I don't get it. Are we eating couches? Or has tuberculosis come back? And what does Steam have to do with with either of these definitions?

I made a mistake trying to engage with the long time users of this site whom don't feel it is worth supporting. Later.

Support what? Steam?

I'm old enough to remember when you bought a hard copy of a game that you could take home and play without having to get the rest of it from Steam. Steam are parasites who add nothing to PC gaming. I'd be more than happy if Valve went tits up tomorrow. Later today would work too.

I wouldn't call it a mistake. I'd call it an odd choice of words. People are beginning to question if the word consumer has any positive benefits to marketing as a whole.

But fine we'll use consuming as a marketing term. I just want to know if this is because of that lawsuit used by some company in the UK trying to squeeze money out of Valve. Apparently according to some YouTube video I watched some UK company was using some rather scummy tactics using UK law to start an opt out petition which is apparently somehow legal. Maybe it would help if some of the locals could help explain it because I'm having trouble believing any of it.

You've piqued my interest. I've not heard of this but would like to learn more if you have link.

Would you believe me if I said I lost the link? Well I never kept track of it in the first place. I remember it was a YouTube video which is either a hit or a miss in terms of information. That is why I asked in the first place. I was hoping somebody would be privy to the details but I mostly wanted somebody to tell me if opt out petitions are legal or not in the UK.

If you don't want to answer that is fine.

opt out petitions

I'm not clear as to who or what is opting out of what exactly. Obviously opting out of the law is not an option and laws aren't enacted or repealed on the basis of petitions.

The video said it was a petition used in a lawsuit against Valve where everybody in the UK was opted in to the petition without their consent which requires effort to opt out. Apparently it is completely legal which strikes me as odd but considering the weird people who say what is legal or not I would not deny the possibility. I guess if it really mattered I'd just look it up.

Edit: I just found the video in my browsing history:

I must remember to delete that.

Thanks.

I read the transcript of the vid as I couldn't deal with the narrator's whiny voice. Dear god - the ridiculous analogies which serve as evidence and the ad hom attacks . . .

As I see it, Valve are being sued for abusing their market dominance not for having the dominance. In the court case the lawyers will, presumably, have to show some examples of this abuse.

Here's a link to the BBC article which seems to be whiny boy's sole source:

Legal action over 'unfair' Steam game store prices given go ahead

I like the lawyer's name: Vicki Shotbolt. Sounds like she's a Skyrim follower.

This US story popped up in my thumbnails:

Whoa.   Thanks for tracking this down.   While @Darkpig started the inquiry, you went more in depth.  I also like that despite your dislike of Steam, you still posted what some woudl consider a flattering light, namely Steam fighting the hated Patent Trolls.   -

I have been a stomach patient for 30 years. Ulcers, long sick leaves, the worst stomach issues you can imagine. Docs didn't have a clue. I went from pill to pill and from cure to cure and from diet to diet.

BUT.. I fixed it myself. And have (finally) solved my stomach problems, after struggling for 30 years with it. I can now eat EVERYTHING again. I eat things I couldn't eat for 25 years..

The solution (and this worked for me alone so 0 promises it will do anything but make you pee) was to make 1 one liter shake every morning with the following ingredients and drink it whole.

15 fresh grapes,
2 mandarines or 1 orange,
1 banana,
1 hand full of muesli,
4 walnuts,
small spoon full of diverse nuts.,
1 cup of yoghurt,

Blend the SHIT out of that with a blender.

My stomach issues went away in 3 days. That is after THIRTY years of medical experimentation from the 'professionals'. Been free of stomach issues (no acid, no pain, no cramps) for 6 months now. Haven't take any meds in 6 either.

Fallout 4. Many complaints over the years about the unrealistic state of the world 200 years after WW3. But Nuka World gets me every time I do quests there. The trash cans are overflowing with trash. So not only do we have the issue that we have everywhere in the game of paper products surviving the elements for 200 years, but we are apparently expected to believe that after the bombs fell, people kept going to Nuka World and throwing trash into the bins.

I was thinking what sick bastard of a psychopath God must be, should he exist, to design his subjects to feel such excruciating forms of pain in so many different ways. I tried imagining it as if I was designing a computer game. Who in their right minds would give the NPC's the ACTUAL ability to feel pain and experience despair, hopelessness, loneliness and excruciating pain in ways they could not have fathomed when they were younger. What God would design a reality in which children are victimized before they even have a sense of right or wrong?

I write this in week 6 of my double hernia which makes it so I can't sleep more than 3 hours without waking up in excruciating torturous pain.

Yeah.. God must be a real fucking bastard, should he exist.

Who in their right fucking mind would design us this way.

That would be a truly twisted fuck.

Since I am playing Fallout 4 at the moment, it's on my mind a lot. For those who have played both Fallout 4 and New Vegas, you know the following truth: Feral Revers in New Vegas are way tougher than even legendary Revers in Fallout 4.
