Wait, I'm going to do you one better even. Which is the better mom?

Mom 1: You're beautiful baby. You can be whatever you want.

13 yo Girl: "I want to be a model"

Mom 2: I will support you in whatever you want, you should make your dreams come true.

Now 14 yo girl: So cool! I'm a model.

Photographer: "Come here and take this pose, little girl".

Now 18 yo girl: So this is Blacks on Blondes?

Mom 2: You're beautiful baby, but you have to find out what your talents are. What makes you happy? What makes you sad? Those things will tell you who you are.

13 yo girl: "I want to be a model, mom."

Mom 2: Sure. But first you need to learn a craft. Modeling can be your hobby, because in fact only 1 in 500.000 girls actually make it to earn enough money as model.

13 yo girl: "I hate you!"

Mom 2: That's alright, I'm not here to be your friend. I'm here to teach you what your boundaries are, so you can learn to overcome them.

The second one was never spanked or slapped. And the mom sounds like a talk-radio host.

The first one came out all right (I don't know what "blacks on Blondes" refers to, except I'm guessing...o. you mean she eventually goes from model to pornstar,)

Plus we never heard what happened to the 2nd girl, was she a runaway strung out on heroin and eventually she ends up doing tricks for drugs?

I gotta read back, I'm sorry, I came in at the end of the sermon.

"sinus...Pareto" I almost got the pareto one, but sinus kept showing noses, so I guessed it had to do with sines... and wondered about scholastic debates, is it a tactic to parry with sesquipedalianism?

Ah, expose your young ones to the smell of failure, do not avert their fragile little minds from the stark realities of life.

Well.

WE didn't invent santa claus, the easter bunny, virgin births.

(I apologize in advance.. I'm in a recalcitrant and debative mood.. I miss debate club. Yeah I actually used to go to one..ok?)

I'm more of a follow the truth kind of guy, using the scientific method. I used to be very ideological. Then I studied Psychology, learned about history, short and long term, I learned basics about biology, evolution and cultural symbolism and what divides countries and cultures through borders and more importantly what brings them together.

Through all that the ideology was scraped away for a colder, more nihilistic view of life, which was ultimately liberating. If the answer to a scientific question leads to an answer that can be considered 'political' and people want to put me into a box because of it, that's their prerogative and choice.

It's interesting though that I came to my conclusions by studying science and politicizing my opinions will in no way lessen their inherent underlying conclusions. In fact I wish they were.

I am referring clearly to the Post Modern tendency for individuals to believe that they can be whatever they want to be. It's just not true and all that idea causes is grief.

I have said this a kazillion times already. An opinion or idea stated in absolutes is always victim to either a sinus distribution curve, or a pareto distribution curve. Reality is simply not perfect, ever. It is the one constant in science. For that reason, anything, any assertion has outliers. Exceptions, at the end, or the extreme end, of that sinus or pareto distribution.

This means that many people in the world lifted themselves up, and were better for it, by thinking 'they could be whatever they wanted to be'.

But my best friend committed suicide, thinking that. Thinking himself better than he was, too good for a job, too good to take responsibility, ultimately leading into demise. And I've seen many people around me disillusioned by this idea. More people are hurt by it, than not. It's reality. It has nothing to do with politics. I genuinely feel bad for young people thinking that, and therefore ignoring their own true selves and talents.

Yes the idea is romantic and by god it soothes the ego. Sure, baby, you can be whatever you want to be.

Say it to your kids and hurt them in the end.

Speaking from experience and a hippy mom?

Definitely.

People can be whatever they want to be. They are free to whatever path they desire. They aren't indentured servants for example.

However, there is a second part that isn't stated but originally implied..

You have to have the skills and or talent to be what you want to be. k Our grandfathers and grandmothers understood this part of the rule. They worked hard at achieving what they wanted to be or to have.

Problem with today is 3 part..

One.. people dropped the second implied part. They expect simply the desire is good enough. Some might say laziness is the cause but there are many that are very hard working trying but failing.  So for many, effort isn't enough

two: People don't know how to achieve the desired goals. They try and try and try using outdated modes or paths to achieve their goals (going to college, trade school, joining the military, public service etc)  In the past there was clear goals and paths. There were expected results and easy to follow formulas to achieve the goals you might have. cost were reasonable and people had an easier time. (most jobs had a living wage, even factory jobs and service jobs. might not have been wealthy but one could buy a home raise a family)

Three:  People don't even really know what they want. Combined with people being told they want something they might not even desire.

confusion on many levels and from many sources.

This is indeed what I was trying to convey. But seriously, you can NOT be 'whatever you want' to be. You cannot be an elephant. Most of us can't be grand orchestrial violists or pianists. Awesome to have a plan and/or a dream. But hope for the best and PLAN for the rest. Because 99.9% of us won't reach that dream.

Somebody has to star in porn so everyone who enjoys porn should be thanking the mother in the first hypothetical. She really is #1. Without people like her, all porn would be 2-D or 3-D rendered.

It wouldn't affect the Furry Fandom or Hentai fans in the slightest, though.

Yes yes, alright. I know when to admit defeat when I see it.

Pornography does outweigh any other priority. I guess we'll have to just accept the decline of Western society as payoff for good Pornography. :D

Hey, one can always still save Western Civilization by teaching children to know themselves as well as anyone can (one half of the equation for defeating any opponent, so it was widely said)both inside and out as well as encouraging everyone to get into well made hand-crafted pornography (when they are of legal age, of course). It is a win-win scenario.

Yes, I could have made a gag about self-exploration when either watching porn or being part of it but that would have been too expected. One has to subvert audience expectations in all things these days or so it seems.

I heard of an Indian Zen master that claims to have reached enlightenment by watching pornography non-stop for 20 years up to the point where he could completely resist all temptation, thus reaching enlightenment. Always loved that story, though I'm pretty sure it's an Indian urban legend. ?

Yes... I understand. However I don't think I was clear.  You have to have skill to reach the level you want to be. you can be a violists if you want and if you practiced for 20 years properly you might even be able to have a lower seat on the orchestra but... those with talent, natural talent will reach the first seat.

I didn't even consider animals. That was something most people grow out of when they are 10.  I was talking about real world jobs and aspirations.  On that point, yes if you want to be an elephant you can't achieve that goal, and if that is one someone has.. that is an adult... they really should seek out proper medial assistance.

the 99% of us not reaching that dream tells me I was not clear on reasonable goals. Our grandparents (generally ) faced the world with reasonable goals.  Home, wife/husband, children, a job (that they were trained to do or had talent in or didn't need either)  The really intelligent went on to higher education and got a career. Those with talent achieved more and everybody understood and respected that.  Most understood their limitations.  I have limitations with Math.. not because I am dumb.. but because I wasn't taught properly and had no interest in it.  I would have to work my ass off to learn (re-learn) what I needed to be proficient at it but would never be like the man in "The Beautiful Mind" as I don't have talent in that.

The problem is people are in dream land.. not paying attention to their talents and skills. Not maximizing their abilities (Myself included sadly enough) and ending up dis-satisfied with what their life has become.  For the most part with people I have met that have maximized or reached a higher level of their abilities are quite satisfied with their results and where they end up at.

Personally with all this discussion, makes me realize I really need to get off my ass and do something about my dis-satisfaction and maximize my talents.

Reginald started with false narrative to begin with.

But we already had an answer:

Discussions are always so much better and so much more interesting, when people use their own words, instead of youtube links, images and the words of others. :)

I try to use my own words, fumbling and stumbling through the English language as non-native English speaker, an already enormous barrier for in depth discussions and deep dives. I could be wrong in my conclusions, I'm open to new interpretations of statistics and new insights. I'm very open to truly interesting discussion, learning-discussion, or creative discussion, which leads in the best case to both parties understanding each other better. And in the 'awesome' case leads to both parties learning something new, if nothing else-- a different way to look at things.

The most interesting and educative discussion is that which is triggered by some kind of profound or controversial statement, to be picked apart and analyzed, fragmented into nothing, or to 'stand' sometimes in the amazement of all.

All of that goes away if people don't use their own words.

Well, if you choose to look at the glass as being half full, the current crop of Republicans are rehashing the talking points of 1990s era Democrats. That's bipartisan misinformation right there.

If they can work together on this, why, Earth's core is the limit!

they'll just keep doing that blaming video games for all these problems, they are just looking for scapegoats. I remember in the 1990's the democrats doing that. Guess its the republicans turn to blame video games now

Something else I don't like/hate is common core math I don't get it and think the answers for something that should be simple enough is now wrong. There wasn't common core math back in 97 when I graduated out of high school looking at common core math and I'm not sure if I'd be able to graduate out of high school if there was common core math when I was in school

Traffic.

Traffic pisses me off, to no extent.

Always one bloody asshole making it dangerous for the rest of us normal drivers. Keep your fucking distance, be a little bit fucking patient.. yes there's a million of us on the same road every day. YES there's a fucking traffic jam everyday. YES that's annoying.

But those traffic jams are always caused by the bloody assholes that cause accidents.

Those same bloody assholes that complain about there being so much traffic.

Hypocritical motherfuckers.

Just drive normally and slowly.

How fucking hard can it be?

(Just for your understanding. EU roads and especially those in my country are much smaller than US roads, this causes it to always be busy and there's always someone around you having a 'traffic' fight with another asshole...)

This is what I have to drive through DAILY...

Seriously.. the busiest days in NY have nothing on the busiest days of some EU countries..

4 LANES.. That's fucking luxury!!

Just look at this total fucking idiot on his bike. I am not exaggerating when I say I see this happen at least once a week on the roads..

I completely understand you. The city I'm living in is touristic city and we have terrible traffic since May till October. The worst thing is most of the drivers do not stop at pedestrian crossing and every while someone is killed. Mostly children and seniors. Drivers unnecessary speeding through the city and the worst are motorcycle drivers. They do not respect traffic signs and driving rules. They behave like they own the streets. I hate those motherfuckers.

HaHa my friend, I live in the countryside, a small village.
as I went to school 50 years ago, existed here no cars yet, our roads were not suitable for cars.
means of locomotion were horse-drawn carriages and tractors.
as the first car drove through my village, have all children get a day school free. :classic_laugh:
