foreversleep Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 When my daughter did her computer science degree a decade ago it was an uphill fight all the way. Essentially she had to be on the top of her game all the time or else she would catch, 'women can't do IT,' put downs from the guys in her classes. Eventually she went on to run her own software troubleshooting business fixing faulty buggy software that companies had paid a lot of money for. Unfortunately her health broke down mostly due to the pressures of the job and she has CFS/ME which she continues to suffer from years later.

If in Europe, which country? Because european culture != american culture. And that sounds exactly like the Americans that bought my previous company and threw us back (culturally) 30 years with their stone-aged attitudes towards work and gender equality. As soon as they took over the company it went from 45% male / 65% female (overall) pretty much within 6 months into the reverse of that.. Of course that was the other depts.. in IT it was always hard to fill the positions. I realize that America is basically just like the EU a set of states (where the EU are countries), each with their own rules and even (sub)cultures, so region is important. Even in the EU there is a huge difference between each country. What I wrote in my initial post does not count for other EU countries.

I have some family in New Zealand that I have yet to visit once. I don't know much other than that my aunt owns a horse farm and is doing very well for herself. It really is a country-by-country thing. I was so interested to see so many women in positions of 'men' when visiting Thailand for instance. It was much more a 50/50 workforce than in the countries that I frequent for work and living. India and Israel for instance, the same thing. So many women in IT!
TheOzoneHole Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 That truly special sound made by someone eating corn on the cob slowly. Everyone else in the family cuts it off the cob, but "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, that isn't eating it properly" and I have to make this abso-fucking-lutely disgusting noise that sounds like a cross between a wet fart, someone getting sick, and a bag of wet potato chips being crushed.

Mice can squeeze through the tiniest gaps. I live out in the rural countryside so mice are everywhere. I've got nothing against mice so long as they remain outside and do their mouse things out in the big outdoors, but come Winter they decide that it would be nice to come inside in the warm and that is something I do have a problem with. A good cat with dominant mouser genes is worth it's weight in gold, but do be aware that if people around you are laying out rodent poison it won't be long before your cat is dead. That's what happened to my poor old much loved moggy unfortunately.

2dk2c.2 Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 When you guys do a rant on bugs I promise to really listen. we killed thousands, they still came. We emptied our cans of spray, they still came. (wait, I need a william-windom pic) "we are in hell". Real cheerful guy, Bill was.

Difference being on digging up the yard rather than coming into the house so the scale is rather different however.

Humans choose their surroundings and their jobs, based on their PERSONALITY. Their disposition. We (our culture) should get that into our thick skulls for once. Post Modernism (e.g. Thinking that 'you can be whatever you want to be') is a fucking fairytale.. a disease.. and it's destroying our society You're spot on on everything else but I'd say you got a little carried away to the other extreme here. I very much support that everyone can be whatever they want to be. But as you mentioned, they really should want it, not just because it pays well or because they want to prove something but they actually really like to do it. Then again how many people really love their jobs? Not that many, so why give shit to anyone who just does it for the paycheck? In any case I will think less of men who belittle women working in my field just because. With my field being engineering/industrial production of stuff made out of plastic. And believe me, these idiots are still around. Dunno where they breed but even now, 2019, you still see that kind of sexism. Mostly from the lower educated though. It's not really that bad anymore though, so hopefully it will go away in my lifetime. Doesn't change anything about what you wrote about the personal interests amongst genders. Most women don't care about tech, that's just a fact. And tech jobs pay more, that's another fact. And getting kids throws you back too, third fact. So yeah, I just ignore feminists who go on a rant about equal pay. Fuck off and learn some logic before speaking to me, woman.

You literally and figuratively can NOT be anything you 'want' to be. People thinking exactly that, is the reason for the rampant depression and anxiety disorders, the numbers are higher than in recent history, it's the number 1 disease.. Post Modern people (people that think "I can be what I WANT to be" get disillusioned (most all of them do) and end up depressed, alcoholic, (self)abusive, (self)destructive... the list goes on and on and on. It's the reason why people cannot hold healthy relationships any more, they place completely unrealistic expectations on themselves and on their partners. Marriage has never been as fragile in Western society as it has today. Y'know, relationships... between humans, the basis of our existence and survival as species. Post Modernism is the cancer that's destroying our society... But there is good news.. luckily more and more people are finally waking up from that dream, to accept their own limitations. That's the challenge: Not to become who you want to be. But to accept who you are and develop the strengths and talents you were given, not those that you WANT. It's an egotistical form of thought, based on individualism. I'm not an individualist. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the One, or the few.
Bazinga Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 I don't think in absolutes and I like keeping it low key instead of trying to make it about some big issue so sorry, can't follow you there. In the end what I care about is that everyone gets out of each other's hair, live and let live. So I won't tell any woman what she can and can't do because what the fuck do I actually know that justifies limiting her pursuit of happiness.
Reginald_001 Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 5 minutes ago, Bazinga said: I don't think in absolutes so sorry, can't follow you there. That's.. pretty absolute of you. Also, there is nothing 'absolute' about my well-formed argumentation, based on statistics and arguably observable circumstances in our society. The argument I'm taking is supported by well known psychiatrists and philosophers such as Carl Yung, Solzenytsyn, Kennedy (y'know that President), Paglia (y'know the feminist) etc..etc.. They are not absolutists.. Was Kennedy being absolute when he said: "It's not what your country can do for you, but what you can dor for your country?"
Bazinga Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Don't give much of a shit about my country either, so another point we disagree on. I like it the way it is but I wouldn't go to war for it ... unless the raping hordes of evil are at the front door. But I'm pretty much undecided on the question if we should solidify the EU or go back to national states. Something tells me that bigger fish have a better chance to survive so...
GrimReaper Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Bad postmodernism = rejection of grand narratives. Which is a problem since 'all grand narratives ought to be rejected' itself is a grand narrative. Good postmodernism = deconstructing grand narratives to separate the useful bits from the useless ones. It's not like all stories are bad, it's just that a lot of ideologies get shoehorned into them. There's a lot we can learn today from even ancient stories because the history of mankind is essentially one big social experiment, sometimes things work out, sometimes not. One thing to take away in any case is that a good portion of doubt never hurt anyone and you should always be suspicious about yourself when you reach the point where you think you know the absolute truth about complex issues.
Bazinga Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Agreed. The grand narrative I subscribe to is scientific progress. Solving problems through science and going to the stars some day. Political divides don't really interest me beyond what interferes with people's personal freedom and pursuit of happiness. So for example I am very afraid of the Chinese and the direction their society is going, but I couldn't care less about the libertarian/socialist/liberal/younameit squabbles in the west. Concerning western societies and their problems it's all too much melodrama and too little pragmatism (take every ideology and implement what's best for a stable and still inventive society). You could say that I'm basically a moderate negative utilitarianist who cherry picks and combines what he likes about different sets of beliefs.
Reginald_001 Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 (I apologize in advance.. I'm in a recalcitrant and debative mood.. I miss debate club. Yeah I actually used to go to one..ok?) I'm more of a follow the truth kind of guy, using the scientific method. I used to be very ideological. Then I studied Psychology, learned about history, short and long term, I learned basics about biology, evolution and cultural symbolism and what divides countries and cultures through borders and more importantly what brings them together. Through all that the ideology was scraped away for a colder, more nihilistic view of life, which was ultimately liberating. If the answer to a scientific question leads to an answer that can be considered 'political' and people want to put me into a box because of it, that's their prerogative and choice. It's interesting though that I came to my conclusions by studying science and politicizing my opinions will in no way lessen their inherent underlying conclusions. In fact I wish they were. 2 hours ago, GrimReaper said: Bad postmodernism = rejection of grand narratives. One thing to take away in any case is that a good portion of doubt never hurt anyone and you should always be suspicious about yourself when you reach the point where you think you know the absolute truth about complex issues. I am referring clearly to the Post Modern tendency for individuals to believe that they can be whatever they want to be. It's just not true and all that idea causes is grief. I have said this a kazillion times already. An opinion or idea stated in absolutes is always victim to either a sinus distribution curve, or a pareto distribution curve. Reality is simply not perfect, ever. It is the one constant in science. For that reason, anything, any assertion has outliers. Exceptions, at the end, or the extreme end, of that sinus or pareto distribution. This means that many people in the world lifted themselves up, and were better for it, by thinking 'they could be whatever they wanted to be'. But my best friend committed suicide, thinking that. Thinking himself better than he was, too good for a job, too good to take responsibility, ultimately leading into demise. And I've seen many people around me disillusioned by this idea. More people are hurt by it, than not. It's reality. It has nothing to do with politics. I genuinely feel bad for young people thinking that, and therefore ignoring their own true selves and talents. Yes the idea is romantic and by god it soothes the ego. Sure, baby, you can be whatever you want to be. Say it to your kids and hurt them in the end. Speaking from experience and a hippy mom? Definitely.
Reginald_001 Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Wait, I'm going to do you one better even. Which is the better mom? Mom 1: You're beautiful baby. You can be whatever you want. 13 yo Girl: "I want to be a model" Mom 2: I will support you in whatever you want, you should make your dreams come true. Now 14 yo girl: So cool! I'm a model. Photographer: "Come here and take this pose, little girl". Now 18 yo girl: So this is Blacks on Blondes? Mom 2: You're beautiful baby, but you have to find out what your talents are. What makes you happy? What makes you sad? Those things will tell you who you are. 13 yo girl: "I want to be a model, mom." Mom 2: Sure. But first you need to learn a craft. Modeling can be your hobby, because in fact only 1 in 500.000 girls actually make it to earn enough money as model. 13 yo girl: "I hate you!" Mom 2: That's alright, I'm not here to be your friend. I'm here to teach you what your boundaries are, so you can learn to overcome them.

The first one came out all right (I don't know what "blacks on Blondes" refers to, except I'm guessing...o. you mean she eventually goes from model to pornstar,) Plus we never heard what happened to the 2nd girl, was she a runaway strung out on heroin and eventually she ends up doing tricks for drugs? I gotta read back, I'm sorry, I came in at the end of the sermon. "sinus...Pareto" I almost got the pareto one, but sinus kept showing noses, so I guessed it had to do with sines... and wondered about scholastic debates, is it a tactic to parry with sesquipedalianism? Ah, expose your young ones to the smell of failure, do not avert their fragile little minds from the stark realities of life. Well. WE didn't invent santa claus, the easter bunny, virgin births.
