Imagine DRM in mods... Being banned off the Nexus the second you mention you have a pirated mod or it comes up in your log or the like... yeah.

I'm not sure how that would work, quite frankly. Unless bethsoft really changed the way mods worked for Fallout 4 there doesn't seem to be anything stopping anyone from copying and re-uploading the files for a mod.

Well ... if they wanted to be dicks about it, they could require the mods to be cryptographically signed before FO4 would load them. It would need to be set up so your own mod would always work on your m/c, but to get them to work on anyone else's you'd need to upload to steam, get it signed and then other people could d/l the signed version.

Of course, there'd be problems with collaborative projects, Nexus would have all sort of problems ... and it'd be a real dick move. I don't think they'll do it ... but if they wanted to, it would be something like that.

I don't understand why the player character has to be married in the first place? So you can't choose your gender at the beginning says many people now on the internet because the player is married and his wife is killed in some crappy cutscene at the start of the game. That is the dumbest writing I have ever heard for a game in a long time! Who fucking cares if the player is married or not dammit? Why should the player be married only to see their wife killed at the start of the game? oh cuz revenge plot device? what a load of shit! Why is revenge always the main plot device in fallout games? just like why is the player always in jail in the beginning of all elder scrolls games? Has there ever been an elder scrolls game where the player was not in jail or tied up at the beginning?

The internet has better plot writers than a major gaming company how sad but true:-(

We all know how beth games start out... shitty story, terrible programming, lots of patches so modding is made difficult, have to wait at least a year to play it and now we have to add potential for gabe to screw us over for mod money to that list. Every game beth makes from now on will have the potential to be exploited by gabe. he will try every time until the customer base eventually gives up fighting it and just spends their money on mods.

Gotta love how people get all worked up over their own guesses. There's no indication whatsoever that people will ever be forced to buy mods. The only official response on DRM-ing mods or forcing them to be had through the workshop, paid or not, has been a solid "that'd be stupid" from valve. Financially exploiting a game is the purpose of releasing it, if selling games is your business, so that's nothing new. And there's no reliable source I can see that says we won't have a choice of gender to play, or even who in that trailer is actually the player character.

Doom and gloom! Duck and cover!

The main character, wife, and child may actually die together in the beginning.

Theory is that your an Android.

On top of that the rumor is that you can have a gender change later in the game.  Even if its not true it's going to be funny seeing E3 footage of reporters pressing these questions.

being and android with the memories of a dead person would be very blade runner-esque. I don't think bethesda or any game company would do that unless it was an option the player could choose. People are way too attached to being a meat bag

I'd love the fuck out of being an android able to swap bodies, maybe getting confused over what gender s/he was before the war in the process, maybe the memories get mixed up along the way and new memories come in. With the success of experimental storytelling like Bioshock Infinite, Bethesda might very well be willing to take that step. Would explain the whole VATS system way better if it's an android's heightened perception. Plus it ties in a ton more into the whole android railroad and thing we had from Fallout 3 than any other option would. Keep in mind Harkness in Fallout 3 who had no idea he was an android.

If this is the case however, expect Bethesda to either deny it or be intentionally vague about it all the way. It'll be like "Are you an android?" "Nope" "Are you sure you're not an android?" "Yes" "Oh you totally were an android after all!" "Haha, gotcha!"

Strangely enough, the noodle shop in Diamond City, which was one of the first things I noticed in the trailer, immediately reminded me of Blade Runner.

I guess we just haven't got your tremendous natural cool :P

I don't think they'll use DRM on mods either. It would be stupid. I do think it's a fairly safe bet that we won't see a creation kit until well after the holiday season though, and that we'll need to do some work before we can get custom animations working.

Really, I'm just trying to manage my expectations :)

Do we have any reason to suspect that apart from that one troll post on Redit from someone claiming to be a disgruntled ex-employee? It does seem like an odd thing to do.

Personally, I'm inclined to trust Beth on the storyline. That's one area where they generally make things work.

Beth sucks for storylines, exhibit A dark brotherhood quest from skyrim and exhibit B most ot the writing for skyrim lol. Having to kill parth is stupid and the whole civil war thing is even worse. I hate the writing in skyrim it keeps me away from the game along with all the dam bugs I don't want to deal with and the hoops I will have to jump through to get the game going just right excluding mods other than unofficial patches. All the ENB stuff is designed for nvidia cards and doesn't work so well with amd cards.

I think what people really wanted from skyrim was some sort of open world 1st/3rd person RPG and they didn't exactly find it in ESO either.

If the reddit user rant turns out to be true what then? It simply does not make sense to limit potential customers with lack of starting game options because of bad story writing. I guess I just don't have an interest in the fallout story in general, I don't care for all that 50s shit and vaults/human control groups bs either. Would be nice to have some modern day remake that would seem more relevant and not tie the player down to the vault as a starting point. The player could start off outside the vaults and have to discover their origin vault over time as part of the story. Discover their past in the vault because of amnesia or just some reliving memories bit. The main story of the game is not the dam vaults anyway it is the other characters blah blah. Like I said I am not fond of the fallout story it just feels lame and uninteresting.

There wont be a thing stopping a player from playing a female character, same cutscenes your just the wife remembering the past.

I do find it hard to belive that they will force the player to play as a pre-made male character. Bethesda has made some boneheaded choices in the past, but that would just be stupid beyond the pale. Beeing able to make your own char has always been one of the draws of their games, surely they would understand that?

^^^^This!

This is what I am talking about right here!

Just dumb of them to write so poorly that they had to limit a game function to fit their crappy story writing lol.

I hope it's a hoax, I've got way too many games to finish as it is without adding this at the top of the pile.

aaaaaaand not a hoax

its real and you can already preorder it. totally sure release is not told yet but it seems to come this year many say october

Even if they do release it you still have to wait at least a year before playing it unless you want to encounter game breaking bugs less than half way through the game.

well i had already gone through that in skyrim and oblivion (in skyrim most game breaking bug was when i could not finish dawnguard dlc because second final quest never marked itself as finished)

i dont think im too worried

When Skyrim came out, Todd Howard talked in a couple interviews about their intention to introduce mods for consoles and that they were looking for ways to make it feasible. What is the simplest way to achieve that? Well, you could simply treat the mods as 3rd party DLCs. Some curated, some aren't and offered as "beta" (i.e. use at your own risk). All players will be able to download these "3rd party DLCs" either over Steam it they are on a PC, or over the PSN or whatever the XBox uses. I personally see the recent "paid mods" scandal as an attempt to turn mods into 3rd party DLCs. It may not happen as I described, but I wouldn't completely dismiss the possibility.

Posted

Mods to DLC thing could work for consoles now since latest consoles are just crap computers anyway. There needs to be a better way to make and install mods like no loose files and this load order shit has to go away seriously it sucks to need some other program just to get a load order right. The lease beth could do is make a good load order manager that rivals the latest 3rd party stuff we have now for skyrim.

Posted

I don't think Bethesda sees the people who use 200 plus mods with complex load order arrangements as a significant majority, as some of us do. I don't know the exact sales figures of their games, but PC sales could be a lot less than consoles, as shown here, for example. If that's indeed the case, those who mod their game to the extreme could possibly be a tiny minority, which wouldn't be a priority on their plans. I'd say, for a few dozen mods, load order management wouldn't be a serious issue.

Posted

I am guessing that most people have about 30 to 40 mods running average. Even with that few mods the load order thing is a problem plus leveled lists not merging automatically between mods sucks too. If they want to offer mods to console users then the basic stuff like leveled lists merging and same npc/merchant inventory/blah blah use between mods has to be supported because I could not see console users going through load orders lol that would be funny to see. Imagine some call of doody time customer trying to figure out load order then complaining they have 30 mins left before they have to drive like a jerk to get to work on time as usual. Console users are like cell phone users they just don't have the time for anything more than pressing the start button, having to install a console game to a console hard drive is already pushing their limits to the max.

Not a console user myself, but I wonder how they do the sorting on consoles for games that have, say a dozen of official DLCs in various sizes, such as Mass Effect etc., or Fallout 3 for that matter.

So I'm beginning to save up to build a new rig. I believe with the amount I save up every month, I'll have enough by the end of this year if not some time in 2016 to build a really good machine that will kick for a while for next gen games. Mainly for Fallout 4. I'm uncertain right now if my current weak pc may handle it. if it's like Skyrim, perhaps but for me to get the most out of performance, I have to ditch hires textures. Something I don't want to do. And I'm not going to play on mid to low settings. I already tried that and the landscape is just awful with hardly any foliage. So I'm determined to build one regardless the outcome (graphic wise) of FO4.

It won't matter soon.  Consoles are getting smashed by smartphone/tablet games.  Microsoft has already said that the xbox one will have to lift its profitability dramatically or there won't be another, and sony is in serious trouble finacially.  Nintendo nearly went under before the DS came out.

The whole point of consoles was the "casual" gaming market, and that has largely gone to tablets and phones.

Hopefully that will mean games without the consolitis that has damaged so many recent games.
