That reminds me. I really should back up all my downloaded mod folders to a couple of different places.

just zip your steam folder then grab the zip file save it to usb or external harddrive that way if they do fuck it up you can play in offline mode with old mods then you have to rig steam up so it will never go online again

Another idea I am having about my previous ideas above, what if valve just contracted with all game companies for modding tools so those companies co develop the tools with valve so the tools all have valve name on them? This way ANY game sold on steam would have their mods solely released on steam workshop and seal the deal for monetizing mods? Then just about any major game that is moddable will go through steam only.

That is only one of a longer list of potential side effects of this.

Game developers can potentially cut down games (even further) and release them on Steam. Then they can sit back and partake in the cut with Valve.

I believe this was a good illustration of it.

Yet another idea from my previous ideas, what if mods for games sold on steam can ONLY be made with valve tools? What if they say that mods have to be made by a registered steam user and valve tools have to be used otherwise the game assets used outside of those tools will be considered stolen/pirated and the mod created outside of steam will be considered illegal? So they effectively lock down modding to a mandatory system where steam gets paid and game companies get paid for mods/content creation "user made DLC creation" for any games sold on steam.

I am thinking this now, these greedy bastards have probably already thought of this years ago. These hypothetical tools probably already exist or are licensed co developed copies of existing software like z brush/mudbox etc.

This is where the gaming industry is going, locked down content creation where valve gets rich.

By deciding to sell mods just because they see the profit potential while disregarding the fact that Skyrim modding is community-based, Valve might as well become another EA.

Posted

Every game company could become another EA under the valve banner!

Companies would not have to pay anyone to make DLC in house before game release anymore, and they would not have to pay anyone to make DLC after release anymore either.

Well, if they continue with this model I might just have to stop buying games from the TES and FO series. It'll be a real shame if they follow through with this, it'll fracture the modding community like almost nothing else could. It'll be like mobile gaming, in this case with everybody trying to make yet another stupid $1 weapon model or dungeon and expecting people to pay up for it. So much for doing it for the fun and for the community, it'll be about putting a few cents into your pocket (and a lot of cents into Valve's and Bethesda's.)

I suppose I needed some motivation to actually get a job rather than play games every day.  :-/

There are only a few people in the world that make the unofficial modding tools for any pc game. You know those 3dsmax plugins and game file format importers for 3dsmax and things like nifskope etc. Many of those few people don't like the idea of piracy so when valve says that any unofficial tools are advocating enabling piracy then those few people will just go away from the modding scene and we won't get ANY tools in the future for any games sold on valve or not. Those few people will just stop contributing publicly and that will ruin the modding scene.

Just think, valve was started by a modding group that made popular mods for a quake game. Those modders are now destroying the gaming industry!

For every successful game on Google Play, there's a dozen or so copycats. And then the morass of disturbing Frozen flash-based games (fucking can't unsee this kind of shit).

I'm expecting the worst case scenario now, where besides the kind of mods done on loverslab, all "regular" mods end up being sold on steam from one outfit mod to long quest mods.

The future is not bright, not at all.

The Nexus already stated they aren't going to charge for mods, and I doubt modb will either. So at least we have that.

Considering how outragous this whole thing is and the massive backlash that follows (the steam forums are on fire right now and most paid mods are getting flamed) it is likely this fad wil die a slow death.

And what if steam force the nexus to take down all the mods they are selling? That"'s what I'm implying there. They are testing the water before the full scale assault.

I was discussing this and thought the same thing...just not Valve but Bethesda..

If Bethesda is willing to sue over the word scrolls because an indie game named scrolls can easily be confused with the massive IP the Elder Scrolls....

I wouldn't put it past them to issue C&Ds to the nexus, here, ModDB, GEMS and anyone else not pushing the workshop to force people to go to the workshop...yet in thier infinite wisdom they seem to forget.  As much fun as skyrim is with mods it's nearing 4 years old.  Not only can't I see paying for mods that were once free but mods for a very old game..no..

I'm willing to bet that if this gets bad and judging from ESO they indeed have thier heads buried far up thier own ass..this time gaben's...they'll either force the TESRenewal guys into a workshop exclusive deal, buy it outright and rebrand it as one of those cheap cash in "HD redux" thats all the rage this gen or just put the kaibash on it completely.

Theres so many issues here from unfinished armor mods, to using other modders assets, to follower and effects mods that are no frills so you're paying for a base mod you have to add to yourself while the free one is all of the frills, to this very well could turn the Skyrim modding community into minecraft modding community "mine mine mine all mine! So much as ask me to use it and I'll put a virus in it...screw you guys I'm going home!" mindset.

Isoku has likely withdrawn from modding already, he's withdrawn from the Nexus at least. I loved his mods, and he stated that he was 100 % cool with people pirating his mods, he welcomed it, he was just there because Steam asked him to. If this shit ends up with Isoku and Chesko stopping to make mods altogether and probably more people with them, I will be pirating Fallout 4 etc., whereas two days ago I was basically "shut up and take my money". That's really the only response we can give that they'll listen to.

trust me if chesko would consider quitting it would be mainly because what he went through yesterday.

They throwed a buckets of shit at him. Literally.

Hell if I know for what reason.

As if that shit wasn't bad enough in Assassin's creed unity. Putting in stupid microtransactions in a 60 dollar game.

No, that wasn't bad enough. Now we gotta entice MODDERS to do it FOR us.

At the rate we're going, we're going to get another video game crash. I look forward to it.

Well this shitstorm was to be expected. I'm not justifying it but Valve should have foreseen this.

Something that has always been free is suddenly put behind a pay wall, that is bound to send shockwaves through the community.

Valve is to blame for this, if anything people should be raging at them, not the authors. The only thing authors should be reprimanded for is the fact they make money with mods they did not create. But wait, that is Valve's fault too for telling them using other people's mods is fair game and holding them to a non-disclosure's agreement. Making it impossible for them to simply ask permission to use the mods.

It's sad to see authors getting attacked like this, but imo that is all on Valve. They created this situation.

Posted

Game companies are just as guilty because they no doubt colluded with valve to come up with this shit and have to provide programming support to make it all place nice with steam at some point.

So far, only Skyrim mods are behind that paywall, right? I doubt that's the end, and I too fear that future Bethesda games will be "protected" against "illegal" mods. However, doing something like this will probably backfire against Bethesda big time. I think it'll be another week before we could even guess whether or not this is going to be a thing or a horribly failed testrun.

It's already happening, as we're seeing rehashes and shittons of shitware in the last five years, and almost every other dev is flocking to make Android apps and games because that's where the money is, and on top of that, smartphones and broadband LTE are beating the shit out of PCs, so hardware and software and game companies are struggling to stay relevant and profitable.

Valve's decision to go ahead and monetize without any sort of a public referendum, hearing or a consensus amounts to a betrayal of their modder origins.

Thats a Valves fault as well.

Every modder that was involved in this 0-day release was under agreement not to tell anyone about it.

Valve was responsible for getting permissions to use tools the we needed. I personally asked a valve executive to get Fores permission to use FNIS.

And i was told they will contact him - multiple times.

And now we learned that Fore didnt hear a word about it...

Chesko hasn't updated his Frostfall guide page, from the Support the Author page;

Hey, Chesko here. I'm just one guy, but I am the author of several high-quality mods that change Skyrim's gameplay in fun and challenging ways, with more still to come. Charging money for what I do is something I won't (not to mention, can't) do, and runs counter to everything I love about the Bethesda modding community.
