I hope one day that people will say that this move explains how Oculus followed Beta tapes (vs VHS tapes) into being a trivia question.

While I get the idea behind a technology going 'extinct' I hate that comparison.

Betamax was/is a superior technology compared to VHS. I even played music with a fellow whom used a Betamax machine for studio recording because of the fidelity. The reason VHS 'won'? Because they decided it was better to have LONGER tape run time at the expense of quality. See.... the lowest common denominator wins, because people are stupid.

It isn't rigged like other systems like it but rising through the ranks can be a monumental task due to leading members being unwilling to give up their position. Any biases towards you they will use to keep their position. Climbing the leadership ladder in a store for example is not an easy thing if say one of your family was imprisoned or you were imprisoned yourself or they just don't like your family in general. Same with starting a business as people will be less likely to do business with you given your looks, family history, accent, etc.

No, this isn't the slightest bit true at all.  If you actually are worth a damn as a worker and you are not given the opportunity to advance, you leave that business and go to another.  Often folks hop from one business to another just for a raise or title change when there was nothing at all wrong with where they were.  Now if you have zero skills because you made poor choices in life, well, your path forward is going to be a bit longer and much tougher.  For anyone else, it depends on how much stress and time you want to pour into your profession. Of course it also depends on what profession you have chosen.  If you picked lesbian dance theater........well, refer to my earlier comment about poor choices.  You can see who will pay more, McDonald's or Burger King.  ROFL!!!  As for race, family or religion.......nope.  I don't give a shit about any of these things when I order a burger, buy a motorcycle or pick a hotel to stay in.  Who would?  Perhaps there are professions that do care, I know construction doesn't.  Nor do any of the businesses or people that I've come in contact while traveling the US.

A perfect example of this is apple products.  You can't do shit with them without going through their little app, Ifucktunes.  Android is far superior and you can change anything without having to be forced to use a special invasive program that both limits and controls freaking everything.  I've hated apple products since the apple 2e.  Yet folks line up to drop 1k or more for the new iteration of that shitty product.  I've broken everyone I know away from apple products by showing them how much they are overpaying and how much more control and freedom you have to use an android phone.  But I digress.  ?

Apple has this really weird cult around it that i just can't understand. It reminds me of console peasants because it's that same obliviously arrogant mentality they have. At the core i don't give a shit if someone is using apple, if they like it then that's their business just like if someone wants to game on consoles then that's their business and none of my concern. But the obsessive fans are just insane, giving all kinds of bullshit reasons to justify their obsession and when you point out the reality they get so in your face and defensive that it's funny. lol

Yeah, I live in hickville and if I make the mistake of speaking without the southern twang, they don't like it. You have to speak to their level. I imagine dogs sniffing each other's butts cause it's kinda like that here.

Changing jobs takes time. Time being a resource not everybody has. Now I have no doubt you wouldn't care about those things. There are people that are weirder than the hobos in the park in high places and I don't mean weird haha but weird somebody is going to yell at you for being a descendant of spiders weird. Yeah people are weird and I saw a hobo kissing a tree.

Come to think of it maybe I shouldn't make fun of pinesexuals. Whatever I'm doing it anyway?

I can see that. Can't really blame them because that is the accent they use and it would be hard to understand otherwise.

Exactly. Cities are different in that the people there are more used to a diverse culture. You tour the small towns and then you run into some pretty clannish behavior. They don't really like outsiders. I can fucking disappear in the city because hardly anyone takes notice. I've lived in this small community for most of my life and have never felt like I'm accepted.

Time is irrelevant to changing jobs.  If you are dissatisfied you look for another job and when you find one you like you turn in your two week notice, leave and start at your next one.

Clannish yeah. One cannot entirely get rid of bias but one can't exactly preach that people are biased. Things like bias are more of an asymptote more than anything. People are much better about it but it never really goes away. But I think that is all there is to it. At least there is no such thing as a truly xenophobic place or if there is GET OUT, TAKE YOUR CAR, RUN IF YOU HAVE TO! IT IS NOT SAFE FOR YOU HERE! Or something like that.

You realize that time is very, very important to a lot of people who's unemployment benefits are fixing to run out, right? They didn't choose to leave their jobs or have their businesses closed down either. https://www.cbpp.org/research/economy/many-unemployed-workers-will-exhaust-jobless-benefits-this-year-if-more-weeks-of

I'm not talking about under covid, we were talking about under capitalism.  As for unemployment, well each of those folks need to take a look at their local politicians and if they locked things down then you need to vote their asses out of office.  If you are still under lock down then you need to impeach the fuckers.

Well in all fairness its a little more complex than just stupidity. During the early years VHS tapes were able to hold several times more content than Betamax tapes. To get that extra space you had to use a format that looked like horseshit but if you were already stuck playing your tapes through a clunky lower class TV of the era you'd barely be able to notice. Video cassette tapes were also rather expensive all the way into the mid 80s, making storage space a lot more valuable.

Also there were a lot more options in VHS systems, due to JVC being willing to license out their design to other manufacturers while Sony mostly kept it in house. That drove the cost of VHS machines down much faster than Betamax. Between that and the multiple tape storage size formats VHS won over the working class masses. By the time Betamax caught up the damage was already done. Beta was also stuck competing with Laserdisc, which took a chunk of the rich people/videophile market away from them.

These days if you want analog video you'd have no reason to choose VHS over Beta or Laserdisc. But back then it was the poor person friendly format.

Well, it may have had something to do with it though not as much as the price difference between the tape players (a whole $700 USD more than the competition). Sony likely learned how not to be the first one out of the gate with an overinflated price due to their failure with Betamax.

I've never had this problem but I've heard of it and hate it that is nosey neighbors. More specifically if a girl has a boyfriend and he is visiting/staying with her a lot. Possible some neighbor might come up and tell the guy that he can't stay with her cause not married as if they own the place and then ask inappropriate questions.

I live in a major city with my gf and never had that kind of problem thankfully.

I hate days like this. Four inches of rain between midnight and noon and it still won't let up. Barely 50 degree. All I want to do is sleep and I can't find motivation to do anything even though I've got a ton of stuff that needs to be done.  As a kid I loved this kind of weather but as an adult it is a pain in the butt.

The clear winner was porn, you could keep more porn on VHS, and unlike a certain other format, there were no press releases touting antiporn rhetoric. The PC police win again, as they always do.

Yeah pretty much any misstep business decision you could make was made by Sony during the VHS vs Beta wars. Very elitist attitude in everything they did with Beta.

Have a feeling their days are numbered as people are more than a little fed up with being preached to about things they enjoy- especially as they see more and more what a world where everything is censored looks like. Not fun or entertaining at all and way too fucking serious and bland. When companies see their bottom line looking weak, they'll drop pc bs for the bad habit it is. Just look at what happened with the NBA. Get woke, go broke.

There isn't anything wrong with the desire to see things like they want.. the problem is they are going about it all wrong. Trying to change franchisees to suit them is wrong. Developing new IP or other content that does suit them is fine.  There can be well written stories and even games that deliver various aspects of alternate lifestyles that will cover those communities.  I like how Witcher 3 handled various aspects of alternate lifestyles. I just loved the cross dressing elf. None of them .. at least IMO was meaningless placements to satisfy a check off list. Each of the characters .. such as the lesbian sorceresses and of course the cross dressing elf was well written. I really was bummed with the hunter that lost his love and livelihood due to his relationship with the son of the manor. It was very well written. Better than many games I can remember.

Checking off a list just to check off the list is stupid and really harming those communities that they are claiming they want to help. I remember the hit 6 ft under. Well written story with major character being a homosexual couple. That was a newly created content (at that time) and intentionally well written characters.

You can be open, further the alternate lifestyles into society in a meaningful way. Where there are stories and characters that have a deep meaningful purpose... or you can just create meaningless dribble, destroy established IP and make a mockery of the entire situation. The choice is up to the individual and those that claim SJW etc... are choosing the later in my opinion. Now I am sure when someone hears something has been treated to SJW standards... they just turn away and leave. Shame as if it was as I believe it should be, with great content, it can expand these communities, help gain more acceptance in society and even mainstream media much more quicker and in a much more meaningful way.

There are and almost none have a problem with it and might enjoy seeing things from those views (like I do). The problem is when they try to force their identity politics on everything and everyone as a weapon to silence dissent. They're trying to dictate and replace, not present some alternate view in an enlightened and inclusive way. They're literally pushing for a power structure that flows from the top down and the tail simply does not wag the dog. Never has and never will.

Nah. Tipper Gore didn't have the bestest interests of the childrens in mind, she picked the lowest hanging fruit possible because there's no effort or context needed to simply cherrypick someone saying bad words on a record or television. PC is not progressive of any kind. Progressivism is literally tolerance for the outlier and minor, and the grand unyielding irony is progressivism means having to tolerate and curate things that you hate and things you don't understand. You don't get to pick your favorites and put them in an immunity box. This is what a literal child without an ounce of wisdom or clarity does. This is what a fucking moron does. If you are truly progressive then things that are abhorrent to you are to be respected as long as no one's rights, dignities or freedoms are impacted.

There's nothing progressive about sitting on your smugly entitled ass in a panera bread doing a "job" you literally make up everyday calling Terry Crews a porch monkey for not getting on the bandwagon because he can see the consequences of made up fabricated intolerance a mile away. bullshit. You are part of the problem, not the solution, and solution thereof takes contextual clarity, long term decision making and the realization the world existed just fine before you were born and even better than you before 2016, and when you're gone you won't be missed, because all you've done is hide behind media corporations being told what to do by three white women who are >literally< paid to tell black people how to manage their lives as black people, white women whom literally made up their jobs from thin air and have zero credentials to do so.

For a moment I thought we were talking about computers. Or is PC short for politically correct? Going by the latter the politically correct thing is not to censor porn. Or am I thinking of politically right? Not to be confused with the political right. The right thing in politics is not to censor porn or media of any kind for obvious reasons. If there is anybody still needs convincing just ask me.

I agree with what 27X said but I feel like words are changing in ways where they no longer make sense because people are using the words poorly. Politically correct should mean that they are correct in how they handle political matters. This seems to be used in quite the opposite manner because of people who think they are politically correct when they are not. Well actually it was more of a satire in joke by leftists during the 70s and 80s and it turned into something more serious. The reason people have such a hard time saying the correct thing and this includes all manner of media is because it can be nigh impossible to know the correct thing to say. Even if you say the correct thing it is open to interpretation. For example "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" Does not mean I'm dreaming of a Christmas of white people. It means snow dammit! If somebody has a problem with a way something is said they should talk it out. If they don't want to, sucks for them. I think everybody on this thread has been fabulous on this matter.

Politically Correct just means that one's political views are fitting for the people who currently hold or recently held something approaching cultural hegemony, thus they will not earn wide spread social censure from those who hold influential positions in one's country of residence.

It does not really matter if said political views are on the right or left of the political spectrum (even though the phrase did originate in Soviet Russia).

Come to think of it, when it came to the Soviet Union, one could just say that Politically Correct viewpoints and opinions were whatever didn't ultimately get one stuck in a re-education camp or worse, Disappeared and Un-personed.
