Online or Offline

As everyone playing with a licensed copy of Skyrim (through Steam) knows, it is possible to play the game in either online or offline mode. I am curious to hear whether anyone has noted any significant benefit or seen a deleterious effect from choosing one or the other mode.

Oldrim has almost no differences.

The only direct communication to the server is in case of achievements.

Also the saves, that can be stored server side, are not put on the server directly by the game but by steam service checking in the background.

For newer games I am not sure.

Never seen any point in playing online myself. I'm indifferent about Steam achievements and they seem to get updated from your current save game when you go online to Steam in any case.

I suppose if you're into multiplayer games the Steam overlay may be of some use perhaps

I usually run it offline. Mostly because I'm a cantankarous bugger and constant messages popping up in the corner from random folks asking if I wanna go do some fortnite irk me no end.  It used to get rid of achievement popups too, but I've noticed with recent steam updates that's no longer the case :[

Mostly offline, well... at least I don't care at all about being online, "achievements" and stuff like that.

But your question is a good one ?

Online all the time, because too lazy to change anything on steam.

Normaly i would say for Skyrim LE it doesnt matter, because no updates anymore.

BUT i have the suspicion that i get repeatable CTDs on stable load orders if steam decide to update a game in my steamfolder (any game) while playing modded skyrimLE

How does one turn off the steam without turning off the internet?

One doesn't turn Steam "off" and still play Skyrim. On the top left hand of the Steam message box is a small "Steam." If you press this button you will get a scrolldown that includes "Play Offline." That is how you can play offline with Steam still "on."

I prefer Offline Mode myself. Mostly because it makes things more stable. Or I would think; I've not noticed any real difference, truthfully. If/when I switch to Newrim, I'll more or less be forced to play offline simply to cut off the CC's access to my game.

only in offline mode, I hate game platforms in any form, because I hate that my gaming behavior is monitored and documented.
and should there ever be a game that imposes an online compulsion on me, then I will know how to help myself.
I will not accept these practices! :classic_wink:

I'm with Winny.  What I do in my own home is none of Steam's (or Microsoft's, or anyone else's) business.  Period.

Not to mention my slow-ass ISP can't deal with being online.  If anyone in this house is online (Steam or EA crap) on PC or XBox, well, no one ELSE can be online, and that includes checking email, paying bills or anything else.

Hello - so.  I have Steam and I want to play Elder Scrolls V - and add mods (some regular and some adult).  I don't want the special edition, which I guess is the newer version, and am wondering if I can add outside mods to the game if it's on Steam.  If I should be asking this question elsewhere, please let me know and thanks.

? I am not sure if I understood your question corerctly. But I try to anwer it with my recommended approach

  1. Steam: use it ONLY to let them enforce their DRM on you. NOTHING else. Install Steam, install Skyrim. Update Skyrim. Be done with it.
  2. Start Skyrim ONCE ONLY through the default Starter to let it initilize it's stuff and be done with it.
  3. Make a backup off your installation (yes, yes, I know. Backup? What's that?)
  4. Get a mod manager (there are many, and religious wars are a slight breeze in summer compared to debates about mod managers). Get the one that pleases you at first sight. You grow an own opinion anyway and switch in a year or two.
  5. Read a bit about modding Skyrim, maybe start here  https://wiki.step-project.com/Main_Page
  6. ignore mods on Steam... and anything else there.
  7. Use the mod manager to install mods from here or from whereever you like
  8. Have fun
  9. Did I say "Ignore mods on Steam"? I didn't? Ignore mods on Steam! Go Offline!

Hello and you understood my gibberish quite well!  I was asking if I could use mods from this site if I buy Skyrim through Steam (which I guess I have to do, since I can't find it being sold anywhere else).  I usually play the sims, but I want something a little grittier, so I looked at the adult downloads here and thought Skyrim would be the best.  It is super intimidating though!

I can't believe all the mods and steps and files and downloads you need to get the game to run (unless you want to play vanilla then I guess it wouldn't be so hard huh?).  Then if by some miracle you get everything installed, it still might not work.  I'm not a modder - I just want to know what to install where, but as I've been researching all night, I'm finding there are a gazillion ways to do everything and then a triple gazillion files to go along with it.

I'm sad.  I really wanted to play this game and I think I'm being scared off.  Thank you for listening to my rant - it's probably cause I need some sleep.  Or a hamburger - one of the two.  Have a good night.

No need for that. In fact it's pretty simple. Even I could get it right :classic_blush:

You just need to do it step by step and keep an eye out that you can revert your steps (That's what backups are good for. They just eat some disk space, but spare you an early gray hair syndrome).

Since you have only read about the possibilities, maybe you start first to decide

  • play a bit vanilla
  • start immediately with mods ( I did it, but that was 2012 and I just fixed the basic flaws of vanilla and was inspired by some YT videos)

You should start to make a list which mods you would like to play.

  • limit it to a number that feels managable to you .. 10? 20? No more than 30 for you in the first play!
  • The guide I posted above gives you a good start about
    • necessary things
    • optional things
    • eye candy
    • game fun / functionality
    • it just doesn't mention the LL world...(there was a "getting started wth Sexlab" guide around here ... somewhere  ?)
  • read about their requirements and the requirements of the requirements and them to your list
  • read about conflicts, incompatible versions (always the newest!)
  • If you feel unsure, post the list  here on LL or on another forum  and let others comment on it
  • Since mods are loaded in seqnece, the sorting of this list is important
  • install that list, play it, have fun :)

You make so much sense.  I've played games with mods before - this game seems to have a lot more going on than the couple of modded games I've been playing, but you're right; go through the steps and pay attention.

One last question and then I'm off to buy the game (found it on Steam, but I guess you have to use a real browser to buy it.  Steam does NOT make it easy to buy this game, which is crazy - money should be money, wherever the customer wants to spend it, but maybe not to them.  I dunno), and am wondering if I should also buy the three DLC packs on Steam right away as well.  Since the total cost of the game and three DLCs are pretty much what one current game would be, my inclination is to get them now.

Let me know what you think.  I think I have the getting started with sexlab guide open in one of the 30 or so tabs I've opened tonight, so I'll start there.  Or somewhere, but will play vanilla first, just to get an idea.  I ramble when I'm hungrysleepy.

Get the whole pack  in 2018 almost everybody expects you to have them anyway and many good mods rely on ressources from one of those.

I even paid them twice :classic_biggrin: Vanilla, ... then 2 DLC's and I always had to skip mods with Hearthfire as a requirement ... and then I saw an offering for the whole pack for the price of a junk food burger ..

And if you get in trouble on the way ..

I recommend two dedicated blogs around those nasty inconveniences (like CTD's)

Further reading..... if you want to spend time on that instead of playing :classic_wink:

But there are many good guides more... I just can't remember them all.

If you are a bit more advanced on your path and need inspiration on what mods and tools one could need ..

Done and installing all the files now to play a little bit before I call it tomorrow.  Since I'll have the game and DLCs installed already, will I have to uninstall them to get the mods I want later?

I think you are now reading my mind.  Your last post should answer my almost question from above.  I'm going to check out your suggestions while the games download and go from there.  It's 346am here - so either late or early.  Thank you for all your help and I'm glad you're a night owl or early bird like me.

No problem, it was early lunch time for me.
