Mumin Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Looks like their new policy giving mod authors the power to ban people from downloading their files has gone to someone's head. http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1266346-chicky540-banned/ How the hell could anyone come up with such an inane idea in the first place though?
ratrace Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 How can someone be such an ego cripple to jerk off on such a petty thing like do-it-yourself-banning? Sometimes I get the impression that the net is full of narcissistic idiots and antisocial dumbfucks. And I don't mean the Nexus staff, but the mod author and people the like. Sorry for that, but I don't get the Nexus hate here, and I'm not in any way affiliated to them except having a few mods hosted there. Of course it was foreseeable that there would be a few imbeciles who would compensate the emptiness of their lives with some sort of pathetic feeling of power like being able to ban someone on the Nexus, but hey, what should the site staff do? When they ban someone themselves, it's 'of course' always unfair (which in some cases may be the case, but c'mon, you know as well as I do that a lot of jerks really deserved a ban but only a few admit it), when they let the mod authors do it themselves it is wrong as well. So what should they do? When I was a forum moderator a few years ago - a german forum with only a small community - it was absolutely impossible to avoid banning completely. Just as many people here on LL, I've been (and still often am) pissed off because the Nexus was sluggish or people there sometimes are a pain in the ass, especially the spoiled brats who want to have all their wishes fulfilled instantly, or modders deeming themselves some kind of majesty with an utterly snotty tone to the "plebs", or the fucking NMM "ddos'ing" the site or what not. But this time it's the mod author that earned the ban. i will check this issue again in exactly a week from now on, and belive me, i play orcs for over 15 years, i f-ing hate mercy. And I bet that he feels treated wrongfully and is crying in his pillows like a grown up chieftain.
Captain Cobra Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 How the hell could anyone come up with such an inane idea in the first place though? Because it sounds good - on paper. "If mod authors can ban trolls quickly and efficiently then trolls will go away." It's flawed, but it sounds good when "trolls" are so abundant that it could greatly cut down the time staff members use on combating "trolls."

What I could imagine as useful would be the right to ban users from posting comments on your mods if you (rightfully or not) believe some people just are out to troll you.
Kendo 2 Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 There will be an increase of people with multiple accounts to circumvent bans placed by OTHER MEMBERS. People will be less likely to post honestly, for fear of being banned from downloading future mods by an author they pissed off. Mod dependency will be hampered if Modder A uses Modder B's esm, and downloaders can't get access to Modder A's esm because he banned them. Uploaders don't have any business banning people.
D_ManXX2 Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Uploaders should still have the right to take someone from posting in his topic if he warned the person and he keeps attacking the uploader. But indeed banning should only be reserved to moderators or site administrator. But it will be even better to remove the part where people can post, if users can't take the hint to fuck off when they behave badly. They should always remain the right to download mods but comment should be disabled, unless they been banned by moderator in that case bye bye. But it will be pretty hard, to maintain something like this.
Kendo 2 Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Agreed. Hide the post, let the real staff look at it and have them go from there. Nothing wrong with being able to block someone from posting in your upload thread if they don't know how to behave.
D_ManXX2 Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Indeed, but does most forums now not have an option to block users ?? i think even here has option like that when you block a user they cannot pm you and all posts from this users will be hidden for you. I think this works much better. They can still post in your thread but all of there posts are hidden and only when you clock unhidden can you view what this person is talking about. And even when they whine to you you cannot see it since it hidden so no harm done.

I thought the staff still needs to review the banned comments and judge whether it was justified or not. I'm sure the same holds true with placing a download block on a person.
Kendo 2 Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 I remember reading somewhere that Dark0ne said there was no appeal process and the staff would not get involved.
PsychoMachina Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I'm sure there will be some incidents of an author banning someone for some puerile reason or a language barrier making a comment seem more than what it really is.

I don't have enough emotions to black list someone. Even if I may disagree with them. I'm better than that. In worst case scenario, if someone does go beyond constantly spamming me with hate in PM or in comments then I will. But so far everyone's been pretty cool.

Reading that "personal policy" post was depressing. That chicky540 thing is a class A douche. Well, that's the interweb for ya. God help me...I agreed with D*n*e that time! Thankfully, Interweb Spellcheck Jesus won't even let me actually type the evil one's name.

Just because you maybe hiding under proxy does not make it fool proof you know..
ElectricSheep Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 i play orcs for over 15 years, i f-ing hate mercy. I don't know what's funnier, that guy or the one who took him so seriously? Should someone address a post like that to me, I will just ridicule him/her and carry on without a single fuck report given.
Wolfoftheshadows Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 You know it's like in this day and age everyone has to have a label and some people abuse it. When I was growing up we used to call each other faggots, retards, and of course gay. I was a gamer it was the way it worked. Now you call someone a faggot and it's some kind of racist homosexual remark... news flash homosexuality isn't a race as is being mentally challenged. Maybe I'm being to harsh about it, but my point is people take it to that serious extreme for no reason. I have never called anyone mentally handicapped a retard and have defended people in my highschool that were being bullied because they were. I've never called a gay person a faggot either, but my friend who graduated top of our entire class out of highschool. I've called him a retard many, many times. My friends who are straight, I still call them faggots. Our race is HUMAN or better yet Homo sapien sapien, we're so gay we put it twice.
DoctaSax Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Pffft, it's easy to say people shouldn't be offended if you're not the one being offended. I'm not talking about the comic here, just in general: for a lot of people especially those still trying to figure out their sexuality, hearing the word 'gay' being used so frequently to mean 'stupid' is unnecessarily hurtful and marks them as second class people. And I think instead of bemoaning the loss of a cuss word to the PC police, people should just invent and get used to using some new ones. How hard can it be?
gregathit Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Cornsucking, beeffarting, fuckbags. Welp, seems I can invent new cuss-words without any difficulty. Apparently it isn't hard at all. Do I get a gold star or at least an internet cookie??????
AwfulArchdemon Posted December 18, 2013 Posted December 18, 2013 Come on people. Wolfoftheshadows has a point, and there's always a counter-argument to it. Others should stop being so eager to rush to the microphone and announce that a word offends them in a reply. If something is way out of line, report it, and let staff handle the situation. If you feel offended, don't bother acknowledging it by replying. Pointing it out, and bringing attention to it means inviting negativity to the topic. There's no need to feel like a movement should be made just because someone used words you dislike. Wars are started far too easily, and can be avoided by keeping your mouth shut when you know it will start an argument, especially when you're pointing out obvious points like "the word faggot offends gay people", or calling someone a retard certainly offends people in close association with people who fit the "category". Saying "I'm greatly offended by that statement!" invites others who share your opinion to post comments that overwealm the original poster, when they never actually meant to offend anyone. Just talking, like they would to any one of their friends, should be recognized for what it is, and we all use plenty of derogatory phrases when we speak naturally, on a daily basis, and think nothing of it. No need to make it a big deal here then. We do not all need to feel like police. We should instead feel like teammates. This is a gaming site, afterall. Don't kill comedy as we know it!! I'd like to just say "Fuck you!!" to everyone, and hear them all say "No...Fuck YOU!!!" Hahahaha! WOOOOOH!! LoverLab RULES!!
