Shogun is a really good show. The 80s miniseries focused mostly on John Blakthorne. The new one focuses a lot more on the political intrigues, a lot more on the Japanese characters other than the main ones, and a lot more on the women characters. It also shows that Japanese and western European cultures each have their positive and negative aspects, and members of each culture have trouble seeing the negatives of their own culture and the positives of the other. The burden to learn, however,  is on Blackthorne because he's the foreigner.
