Phonetic alphabet. "R" for "Roger". Apparently back in the days of Morse Code, "R" was used as shorthand for "message recieved" and the usage carried over into spoken communications, but they said "Roger" rather than "Arr" just to make things clearer.

Good thing he told you, because I was going to tell you that in the UK and the US, Roger is the guy that gets everything done, so when someone says something over the radio, they mean to either "Give it to Roger" or "Roger will do it"    that got shortened to just "Roger".     However, @DocClox gave you the right answer.
