A little warning to mod creators of non adult mods....

Well not to rain on any potential modders parade, but after this stupid stunt by Beth and Valve, I just don't see any future for any real talented modders. (okay I lie)

  • you are already employed under their wings on a crappy salary. "Oh darn, but I was looking to become a real developer some day...."
  • Bethesda will just make some mediocre game as always so we can fix the broken patches and give it lifespan as we have been doing.

Hell after this stunt, I wouldn't doubt that Bethesda will never ever make DLCs again. They'll save money. No more new development. No more hiring professional voice actors. We have it all right here at Steam.

You know what? Making .75 cents an hour 100% profit sounds a whole lot better trying to make a living than .75 cents hoping in one day alone you'll atleast sell your mod once for a mere 25% cut out of it. Yikes... I bet they didn't think about that. Oh and to them. The one's who have the mods up for around that amount. Yeah, good luck trying to break the $100/$400 barrier. It's going to cost you far too many downloads. Probably to the point where just about everyone has it and you didn't hit your quota.

even better, Bethesda releases only the engine and the creation-kit
to create the game, we think modders.. :P

Another thing is as of now, you can buy the mod, copy and keep the files, and then get the refund(which goes to your steam wallet)

From what we know, paid mod is partly Bethesda's idea. Which could very likely mean they will take measure in upcoming game to prevent mod piracy(pathetic) from happening, which likely mean mods could possibly become Workshop exclusive.

quite sure that result would be better this way...

Exactly, Skyrim is Bethesda's sacrificial lamp to test the waters, get data and  implement the paid mod service efficiently in the future game releases.

Even if this thing blows up,which it has, but won't disappear, it will be back in a year or 2, wearing new clothes and more eloquent words.

What i find a bit sad,is that Beth who was the proponent of modding (cause it was promoting and keeping her half baked games alive and kicking for years and years) became sort of adversary of it. I would expect other companies to do it and Beth to be one of the "defenders" instead.

I wonder if a system like youtube's would be possible for mods, like if you're interested in a mod you click download a 30 sec ad plays , the cpm goes to the modder  and no additional expense for the consumer, I mean that's why I watch youtube 'cause I can't afford to go to the movies every week or rent a movie every day , that's why I play FO: NV and Skyrim mod provide longevity in a sea of  games with 5 hour campaign and what not.

Exactly. Being a modder or a youtuber are 2 separate things. Youtuber is not paid directly by the "customer" but by the ads that are showed to them. If a be implemented for mods. That would wipe out all engativities of the pay wall system. Instead of forcing you to pay, you only have to watch an add before you can download the mod and still the modders can get a cut if what it is now.

Third day and I still give a fuck ? The hell, it hasn't happened since they tried to kick out that old lady in my town out of her house to build a parking lot on her place...

Re-reading GabeN's AMA i keep thinking his little story about blisters in his eye may be true. I mean the guy has got to be under some sort of painkillers, his answers are that funny at least...

PS : Not a single post in Steam forums about the new policies, even the one I subscribed to are gone. I thought GabeN was doing something about that ?

In response to a question from redditor Not_dr_phil asking, "Considering valve is a company that owes many of its early games to mods, do you think that if you had to pay 5 dollars for the original Counter Strike, or Dota mod, would they have ever taken off?" Newell wrote, "No, they wouldn't. Which is one of the reasons that we didn't charge for them after they stopped being MODs (at least part of the time)."

Big fat WTF?!

So now it is a good idea?

Think i'm going to dig out my sega and take the hedge hog out for a spin. or better yet i just handed that beth outside whiterun another 29 bucks for the Anthology ... time to head to Morrowind.

Modders getting paid for mods that work and/or finished with updates for free.. priceless .

Paying for crap hacks put out to make a fast buck the fact of what will and is happening.

I would smile while clicking the donate button for my fav mod creators, even if my ex wife  got the gold mine and i got the shaft ,still i would pay and have , for as most of us know our escapism is damn important .

Valve did one thing wrong they fucked with our fun, I really think  bethesda had little to do with this other than say to valve .

" sure we wont fight you over charging for mods." and as valve hangs up the phone. "dumbass"

I'd love to see modders with script-heavy mods trying to support them when games start breaking down.  That'd be fun.  Currently you/they can say "whatever, it's free".  With money though, no, I expect a functional product that will NOT corrupt my saves.  Not to mention mod incompatibilities, that'd be fun to watch.

The worst part about all this is that even if the Workshop mod selling fails and it's all taken down, the damage is already done to the community and there will be very little if anything anyone can say was positive that came from it.

The modders that joined the curated workshop may have had a fairly scumbag approach about it (in-game advertisements, shame on you xilverbullet) but I like to think there's enough humanity drifting around to forgive them, but it will never be forgotten what they did and that will haunt them until the end of their modding careers. I wonder if they even considered the possibility that this all might fail and just punch them in the face, enraging and alienating the very community that made them as big and popular as they are.

Is a few dollars really with tossing yourself on the sword? The gamble is huge and even in the very best circumstances, they're still getting absolutely slaughtered. Chesko was practically attached to a fishing pole and dangled out over a pit of rabid badgers and has what to show for it? Nothing. Nothing but some humiliation and causing a schism between himself and his follower base.

And this is going to be the exact same scenario that's going to play out over and over. Grace Darkling (who I thought was a pretty cool lady) turns out to be really scummy and she doesn't have nearly the following Chesko did. She literally just ruined her internet reputation and while that's not important to a lot of people, to a modder your internet reputation is bloody everything. I could go on and on about everyone else who pretty much said 'fuck community, I want money' because no matter how anyone colors it or sugar coats it, that's what it comes down to.

I honestly feel sorry for the modders, there must be some dire straits or unrequited desires that would push them to give up such a large cut of money, support this type of practice, and then try to tell everyone else that's telling them they're letting Beth/Valve rip them off to calm down and deal with it.

PS: Man, GabeN is one ice cold dude. He'd be a good villain.

I am also warning everybody that you better back up your Skyrim files because Steam can change the exe file with an update and fuck everything up for you.  I think this is also a possibility in the near future.

Already did that since the last official update (of the .exe and not the CK), made a full backup to a spare drive, knowing that at anytime hard drives can get fucked up without warning.

i always run steam in offline mode they cant update if there no net connection when i launch there exe

So, you used to be able to turn off updating for individual games. When did they change that?

I was laughing so much when i saw a mod gold nuggets lying around. Costing 5,- dollars. :D

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=431198998&searchtext=

Looks like they changed the price.

omg lydia cost 91 euro's

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=431939323&searchtext=

and the mod only took 5 seconds to build.

omg here is another quality mod on steam

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=431522840&searchtext=

How can free mods ever compete with these types of quality ??

I think i am going to release a mod on steam even though it is just an ini tweak turn off v-sync and call the mod the buggy skyrim engine watch how stuff fly around you. and ask 90 euro's for it. :P

Maybe we should post a thread and post quality mods from steam.

Fucking assholes. So . . . backing up skyrim. You can back up the folder easily enough, but what about the registry?

Wait till offline mode disappears. FUCK!

This is basically yet another step (after the introduction of the Steaming Whoreshit™) to not only cash on mods, but also gain monopoly over their distribution. I suspect one will have to pirate TESVI/FO4 in order to manually download and install mods, as Bethesda has to now "streamline" the process of mods creation to make it moar accessible, less bug friendly and more Steam friendly; but foremost to enable mods on consoles (which is what they have already stated they want to do). It's a simple and obvious calculation: the easier the process and the more ppl making mods, the more money. I can close my eyes and see Howard going on a tirade about how awesome and "next level" it is that now anyone can make a mod and share it with their friends on both consoles and a PC. See that mod? You can make it.

Modders gonna rage, make videos on yt, sign pointless petitions and whatnot, but guess what: nobody's gonna give a fuck about them. After all accessible modding will render a modder anyone who owns a game, plus there's going to be plenty of those with skills who will simply cash out (it's already happening, actually). And of course the sheep is going to follow and pay for mods, especially on consoles, since consoles are the core platform for Bethesda games for a decade now, if you haven't noticed yet. It's Todd himself who said that people laugh at the horse armor dlc, yet still, up to this very day, buy it.

Old crow of wisdom say
"People of Asa land, it's only just begun"

Of course it is, now that they don't need them. This whole thing stinks so far beyond just the paywall.

"My mods will always be free."

Not for any new games, they won't.

Petitions won't matter. Complaints won't matter. All they see is another revenue stream. People are gonna buy mods "to help the modding community."

In one day Bethesda/Valve managed to destroy and divide entire Skyrim modding community, that was strong and self-efficient for many many years.

This is sad.

All this apocalyptic gloom and doom has got me looking at openmw. It's an open source re-creation of the morrowind engine. Only with a modern graphics engine. And source code.

It's not getting a lot of attention right now, but that couldchange if Beth and Valve really want to lock things down for FO4/TESVI.
