Oooh! That's an interesting idea! I could probably use Steam Workshop as an optional donations platform with this system.

*notices the revenue split*

...

Oksies this idea is awful. Call me after you've fired the con artist in charge of this and you're actually serious about financial cooperation with modders Valve <3

Just did a Google search on Valve, and the petition to remove the paid content from the workshop is in the results list above their company website and Wikipedia entries.

I signed that shit. Won't do a damned bit of good, sadly. I have 1,400 fucking hours in skyrim, for the simple fact of free and copious mods. The more I think about all this the sicker I get.

Time to move on, and  I'm waiting for Kingdome Come Deliverance and Mount & Blade II Bannerlords.
If anyone want some help developing mods for these games please send me a PM. I will not waste more of my time with that buggy and pathetic CK they gave us..

Posted a thread for this but didn't notice this one so here the text, mods feel free to just delete my thread rather than just lock it, I'm a bit turnt up so to speak so I didn't realize this was the paid mods controversy thread.

I'm sure this is a controversial topic right now and I'm sure there are enough threads but I just want to add a perspective from someone who's been burned by this before.

I used to be active in the sims 2/3 modding communities, making nude skins, sexy clothing and such, as early as 2005 i found my content being put on paid-for mod sites which were common in the sims community in modified forms (i:e using clothes i'd made to base modified outfits on and sell them)

Now this has already become a problem with paid mods incorporating FNIS, modding is a hobby, not a job, and people forget when they monetize their content that much of their work is based on the work of others.

Eventually the TS2/3 community i was part of was torn apart by accusations of monetizing stolen content and the like, and i just don't want that to happen to the TES community, even though I haven't been an active modder since oblivion.

Thankfully LL has a really great community, users here let modders know they appreciate their work and contribute new ideas and help with projects, so i'm not so worried about this place.

Still it's a worrying situation, at least the use of a more regulated market like workshop instead of the ridiculous mass of websites that was the sims paysite scene means there's some kind of control.

If you read the comments many of them support the Pay for Mods concept. They seem to just be upset at the 25-75% split. This is Darkputz's position too. This is terrible because the companies will see this as a victory. If the kids keep posting that they support the concept but just have issue with the price split then all that will happen is that they will come up with a fairer price split... we will still end up paying for mods... what's next? In mod purchases?

btw it is not legal to post daz3d assets, you may ONLY show screen captures. you may NOT sell or upload assets you buy from the DAZ store.

read their terms closely. you may only use said assets on YOUR own computer period. why do you think Krysta's mods have been banned from Nexus.

100% Daz3d content. shit ton of work went into converting all that stuff but that doesn't negate the terms put forth by DAZ. it's like buying Skyrim, you don't own the game you only bought a license to use it.

Really? Either I'm misunderstanding things, or you are. If what you say is true, then it makes Daz 3D nearly useless. The biggest benefit of Daz 3D seemed to be a shitload of resources to use when making games (or mods). If the license limits Daz to renders, it makes no sense to me.

This is getting epic. I'm sure soon they will do something to position themselves in search engines better. For now we can enjoy our little victory (not like it changes anything in a long term).

WoW Perhaps I choosed the wrong time to start learning modding .. Although I would be happy to see people earning from their hobby if others would like to donate them I really wouldn't even consider to test their mod if they are to charge me for this. From my personal view the original game although good enough had many problems and many modders have done great work to make it better. But all this on everyone who has decided to download their mod and test it. Still so many mods have conflicts or have problems. Also I wonder what kind of law is this which when you use a free tool or buy a game  and you mod it with your time talent gives the rights to any company to earn money. It is just an excuse the phrase "but this is my game" from the creator. "" This is my car why you have change it upgrade it and it looks so good ? you have even earn so much money selling it with all these extra staff ""  WoW so buying means nothing from the eye of companies like Beth. Sorry when i buy something I can do what ever I like with it and if not then we do not speak of buying and selling a product but perhaps selling a license for a period.

Sorry for any wrongs in my writting. I am a little bit upset and when I write in a second language I do some mistakes.

As far as i know it's bethesda taking a cut and valve taking their standard 30% of all steam sales.

Related my sims post i never saw TES mods being sold before, so this is a whole new thing, but at least the modmakers for the sims who sold their mods sold them through their own websites and saw the whole profit, just look at the front page of the nexus, full of angry modders mocking beth and valve for profiting on their work.

Which is interesting in itself since who owns a mod?

Bethesda made the engine and the game, but some mods are so incredible that it's far more work than beth could even do, like the aformentioned FNIS and skse.

What happens when SKSE requiring mods are sold on the workshop?

What if SKSE, essentially a vital tool for anyone looking for a solid modding experience in skyrim, is sold for profit? I doubt it would happen, but it's still a bad situation.

I don't think Skyrim will have a permanent downside for the modders. Unless Beth completely shafts all mod communities that host mods for their games. That would be some serious shady shit.

They will do it, ESO was a total flop and the share holders are screaming for heads to roll so somebody has to pay somewhere and it won't be the ceo or the board.

You might find this interesting.

A full chesko's explanation on reddit.

Err..

Did Chesko state in this that the Nexus is getting money from these Steam sales?

This is very interesting if true..

I am also considering removing my content from the Nexus. Why? The problem is that Robin et al, for perfectly good political reasons, have positioned themselves as essentially the champions of free mods and that they would never implement a for-pay system. However, The Nexus is a listed Service Provider on the curated Workshop, and they are profiting from Workshop sales. They are saying one thing, while simultaneously taking their cut. I'm not sure I'm comfortable supporting that any longer. I may just host my mods on my own site for anyone who is interested.

If it is true then Darkone is a big fat fucking liar, because for the longest time he's been advocating against the mod fees. I don't think he'd eat his own words, but I guess everything is possible at this point.

I'll give Chesko a point back for pointing out that Dark0ne is pulling in money from this. I'm actually surprised that he didn't get banned from the Nexus for it (yet).

people should start unendorse mods who went to paid mods, to give those modders taste of there own medicine.

I removed my vote for his camping mod for Nexus File of the Month and I'm going to give it to the Give Me Money for No Reason mod. I'm still there under a different name (I gots my reasons.)

The interesting part here is SKSE. Their license states that anyone selling assets and scripts made by them is prohibited. Neither Valve or Bethesda can't really claim their work, so technically all paid mods using SKSE resources could be considered illegal.

Greetings

What you wrote there is not exactly "true" because SKSE already altered the Skyrim.exe file ... and this fact is not exactly " legal " too.

Altered Skyrim.exe? Where did you dig that bullshit out? SKSE does NOT modify any Skyrim exe files. The only files SKSE modifies are scripts (pex, psc files) and it's 100% legal to do so. SKSE is completely legal, and please don't speak if you have no idea what you're talking about.

Erundil, according to behippo (one of the guys who makes SKSE) you're actually not 100% right either.  http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1516811-discussion-for-workshop-paid-mods-thread-3/page-3?do=findComment&comment=23943101

Also, isn't BethSoft's middle name "shady shit"?

Also Also, Forbes (they're a bunch of economists for the non-Americans and non-financial people) have posted two articles about how this move was both stupid and unethical.

Regarding the people who freak about anyone who is supporting this: Too far you are taking this, yes, too far.

The pay split is shit, and that is really the worst part of this to me. With hat and skins for TF2 Valve taking 30% is fine with me (mostly because IDGAF, I don't own or play TF2).  When people start creating full custom assets with 3dsMax or Blender and GIMP or Photoshop...fuck no, you pay me the 75% and be glad I'm willing to share any of the cost with you at all. I don't have to add my work to your platform and use my work to promote your game BethSoft. You want access to my work then you fucking pay me an amount equivalent to what you pay your artists and modelers, and that sure as shit ain't a pissant 25%.

I would like to think that most people would be boycotting EA after origin came out but nope still throwing their money at EA and their underwear too:-(

LoL so true

That's the whole problem with the "vote with your wallet" argument right there. And why the whole sentiment of "ethical consumerism" has Never. Accomplished. Anything.

The fact is, 99.999% of consumers are... get this... bone dead retarded and/or heartless. Most of the time they don't have the correct info they need to make an informed decision. And worse, most of the time they don't even care when they have it. They don't care about ethics. They don't care about good business practices. They don't even care about who gets exploited in what way. The only thing "consumers" give a fat fuck about... is getting two dollars off. The suits could literally beat a kitten to death in front of these so called "consumers", and while they might feign disgust, most of them will just turn around and say "does this mean I can get it cheaper?".  They might even pretend to enjoy the spectacle in front of them if you offer a dime off the product, will readily cheer if you offer them two, and even join in if you offer a dollar off.

Seriously, if ethical consumerism worked, BP, Walmart, Foxconn, etc. would have gone out of business decades ago, and EA would be a distant memory.

Of course, it's entirely their fault, nor is it really productive to blame consumers. After all, we have a billion dollar industry that's dead set on ensuring this exact, self-centered, irrational behavior.  We call it the "advertising industry". And that's even implying they really have an economical choice in the matter at all.

Sure, you have your 0.001% that actually know better AND care enough to act on it AND are in an economically viable enough position to do so, but they are not near enough, and never will be.

The SkyUI thing is bothering me far more than it should, but I feel like I've been betrayed at some sort of personal level.

I saw that today and was amazed that forbes came out against it in not only one but two different articles.

And, at least regarding the kitten bit, there are those of us (in the U.S.) who can legally carry guns who would pull them out and put them to the head of the suit and tell them in no uncertain terms to stop, while also calling the cops (or backup, depending on the person in question).

The SkyUI thing is bothering me far more than it should, but I feel like I've been betrayed at some sort of personal level.

And if you look, who all is listed a a creator and contributor to SkyUI....GOPHER! I wonder how much HE is going to make off of them going behind the pay wall? Someone should really ask him that.

I've… seen mods you people wouldn't believe… Horse Cocks on fire off the coast of Dawnstar. I watched elf tits glitter in the dark near the Ghostgate. All those… moments… will be lost in time, like tears… in… rain. Time… to die…

(pcgamer apparently wouldn't let me post this in their comments because reasons i guess)
