Best RPG/Action Adventure Game of All Time

To qualify, this has to be a game that you have played through at least once and have then later come back to for another play through after a significant amount of time playing a different game.  Skyrim does not count because it is too obvious.

 

Tell us why you liked it so much.

 

My two favorites are Mass Effect (2 and 3) and Cyberpunk.

 

I have played Cyberpunk 3 times through and I expect to come back to it as soon as I finish RDR2.  I love the originality of the story of this game as well as the character development.

 

Mass Effect is maybe the best game of all time in my view,  Again, love the story and and characters you meet.  I usually only replay 2 and 3, but replayed 1 when Legendary came out.

Because of its characters, story, concepts, freedom to make your own kind of Shepard - within the game's logical bounds - choices with importance and repercussions, "My name is Shepard, and this is my favourite store on the Citadel."

I have a feeling this fun game about hopping around space wrecks to avoid wrecking your character(s) with debt, death and other disagreeable possibilities, will go very far. It is currently in Early Access on steam but it shows tremendous promise and its devs have been fulfilling them for the most part, until now. I greatly recommend.

 

It offers an interesting set of mechanics, from the depths of interactions and social aspects to the manual building and piloting of your ship.

 

 

Baldur's Gate III.

 

I haven't played it nor peeked into any of its content past update logs but the little footage and images I have seen tell me I'll likely enjoy it greatly.

Final Fantasy VII

 

FFVII was my commence in (J)RPGs. That game forever holds a dear place in my heart since a teen when it was released. What's there not to say good about that game? The characters and story was by far one of the best. A masterpiece.

  Tho not a RPG I'm not going to lie, WoW took up the most of my gaming life from start to warlords. As far as real RPG's go I've played countless across so many consoles and pc that honestly I cant recall even one single game that is "The One" ,but for nostalgia's sake FF3(6 in Nippon) Suikoden and Shining Force all have a place in a dusty corner of my heart.

Betrayal at Krondor.

 

It opened my eyes to what a true story-based RPG could be - not just a dungeon crawler (Eye of the Beholder), not just chosen one good vs. evil trope (nearly every single Ultima), but a complex political intrigue woven into fantasy background.

TTW (Tale of Two Wastelands) combines FO3 and FNV into one huge game with all dlc and mods that you could play it for months I think. Played it so many times that I literally burned myself out on it and can never really enjoy it again- which sucks since I've got mods installed that I haven't even tried. Some pretty awesome mods came out for NV especially. Die hard fans of the series from way back constantly shit on FO3 and FNV, my gf included, and I try telling them it's worth a playthrough at least once. ?

 

Kotor ranks pretty high too I think, but I wouldn't say it was the 'best' ever. Pretty damn close though.

Icewind Dale 2. Played it through numerous times modded and unmodded.

 

Not a game but a mod for NWN 1 called Citadel. The plot is better than any game I've come across. Huge - about as big as an XP or DLC. Full of custom creatures and the dialogue is intelligent and funny.

 

Solasta: Crown of the Magister was probably the best of the newer offerings. Not very big though.

Have to jump to the defense of Ultima here. The series is in fact known for being the first to break the "good vs. evil" trope in fantasy RPGs. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, for example, didn't even have a villain at all. The eponymous "quest" was a purely spritual one. And that was in 1985! Ultima V from 1988 had a living open world with day/night cycles and individual NPC schedules. The Ultima games (at least parts III to VII) are awesome. Skyrim, for example, can be directly traced back to them. So in a sense, this site wouldn't exist without Ultima

 

Anyway, my answer to the thread title is Fallout: New Vegas. Best writing, roleplaying, choices and consequences, combat, itemization, everything.

Sucks that BIS got dissolved, but reformed into Obsidian. Sucks that Obsidian got absolutely RAPED by Bethesda.

 

Holding out for Outer Worlds 2. Pirated Outer Worlds for a test run and immediately bought it after playing through the tutorial.

Dungeon Siege Legends of Aranna (completed 3 times) and Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines (completed 2 times)

 

As "not very rpg games but close enough":

Witcher 3 (completed 4 times, twice as new game pro) was not bad at all.

Horizon Zero Dawn (completed twice, once as new game pro)

 

Mass Effect 3 was very good. 2 also but I played probably only once. Never completed Andromeda. Nice game but never got me 100%.

I am just going to go ahead and say Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is the best over-all Action-RPG of all time, whether it be for its setting (which might as well be Berserk), gameplay mechanics (which are varied enough to play like a 'Character Action Game'/hack and Slash, a third person shooter though with arrows or pure spell casting like something out of Wizard of Legend), the passive community features, most notably the Pawn System and the Senechal system for online New Game +, still provide something that has yet to be matched in other titles), character designs and a unique plot hook (become the next God or lose one's humanity. There is no in-between).

 

Of course, if one is counting unofficial products of a gaming community rather than pure corporate content, then I would say 'A Well Modded Skyrim'.

And Star Control Origins is a worthy, superb successor!

And there we are. Funny you should say that because Mass Effect is an unmitigated shameless as fuck rip off of SC2. Two lawyers went over the .txt .vox and the tlk of ME and found 90 points of legally actionable similarities including about 80% of the plot.

 

Mac Walters should be very very glad Fred Ford and Paul Reiche are 1. super nice guys 2. too busy suing Brad Wardell.

Ocarina of Time. Though not necessarily an RPG by today's sense of them, it introduced a lot of concepts and features that will be forever a part of open world action-adventure games. The combat system was amazing for its time. The target lock, the switching from 1st to 3rd person, great story and characters and a world to explore. It was the game that changed how I felt about video games.

 

Morrowind. The best TES game imho.

I am just finishing my second playthrough of Red Dead Redemption 2 and it has become one of my favorite games of all times.  It is fun and full of a variety of unique personalities if you do the side quests (as well as the main ones).  I have something like 300 hours in it now and I am considering a 3rd playthrough even though it really does not have any replayability  aspects like many other games.  Still, it is a blast.

Played every vocation at least a few times and still didn't figure out every perfect tactic for fighting every type enemy. The island... is just spectacular. Dragon'sD 2 work has been leaked and release is expected this year maybe. Can't wait.
