myuhinny Posted November 15, 2019 Posted November 15, 2019 My computer is really old and the and the power supply fan is starting to die and is starting make a really load annoying sound so I figured it would be time to update to a new system. My last one was a acer aspire predator gaming tower. The one I'm looking at now is another acer predator. So my question is what does everyone think of this one. This one is cheap compared to the one on tigerdirect. https://www.newegg.com/acer-predator-po9-900-i9k2080ti/p/N82E16883101739?Description=Acer Predator&cm_re=Acer_Predator-_-83-101-739-_-Product
Taki17 Posted November 15, 2019 Posted November 15, 2019 Specs seem alright if a bit flashy, but I wouldn't buy anything prebuilt on principle. 2
myuhinny Posted November 15, 2019 Author Posted November 15, 2019 @Alkpaz My tower is something like 12 years old as I got it back in 2009. I upgraded the graphics card that was in it and that just barely even fit when I installed it. @Taki17 My last one here was prebuilt and lasted 12 years and I only had to replace one small fan and replace the graphics card but the card was normal since I was playing games like skyrim with ENB's and stuff.
Onionstarz Posted November 15, 2019 Posted November 15, 2019 i would wait until you can get a prebuilt with a ryzen 9 3950X, the I9 is end of life has half the threads and is $750 more expensive. 1
Tron91 Posted November 15, 2019 Posted November 15, 2019 I think the 512 GB SSD will be your boot drive. If you wanna loose a lot of lag, I would recommend to get a 1 or 2 TB SSD to be your gaming drive. Game loading time lessens a lot. Am running a 1050Ti laptop, recently added an 1 TB WD Black SSD NVMe and moved my Skyrim SE there. Skyrim started loading 15 to 20 seconds faster. The faster data transfer rate really helps, since low data transfer rate is usually one culprit for reduced performance and longer waiting times (data caching). If possible try to ditch the HDD altogether for a SSD. Don't go for SATA SSD, opt for a NVMe SSD. NVMe ones data transfer speed is better than a SATA SSD.
Rudaja Lisica Posted November 15, 2019 Posted November 15, 2019 What do you want to do on this machine? HEDT CPU's are mostly for multicore professional applications and they are often a lot worse in games. For strictly gaming there's no need for going over 3700x/9700k and 16GB of RAM.only 512 GB SSD in such expensive desktop is a joke. It's waste of money and kinda strange configuration. It would be only worth for professional workloads which doesn't accelerate with Radeon Pro/nVidia Quadro like professional video editing in premiere pro and aftereffects. But still it would be limited with only 512 GB SSD which is the most probably SATA one.
Uncle64 Posted November 15, 2019 Posted November 15, 2019 Agree whit the most of the posters. When you buy one prebuilt you pay way more then when you get the same stuff and put it together your self. Even if your Tower is old, you can still use it, my Tower is about the same age. But now it holds one Ryzen 7 and RTX 2070. Instead of the old Fx 4300 that I did put in it from start. Save your self some gold and take your time to find what you want and put it togher your self.

NVMe ones data transfer speed is better than a SATA SSD. sata SSD are still decent, they are cheaper and you don't feel any difference in game loading or system work when getting NVMe. Of course they are fast and excellent with big files (unless you will go with QLC, big files can overfill the buffer and then it can drop speed really low, even lower than sequential write speed of HDD. The gain from SSD 550 MB/s over 110 MB/s HDD is not in 5x faster sequential write. It's in at least 100x times faster in random read, IOPS and access times. NVMe doesn't improves them to be seen in normal use. Boot time, game loads will be shorter by 0.1-0.6s max than on SATA drive. Ofc I advice going for NVMe when budget is not a problem, but it's the last thing i would upgrade in PC build. I prefer to go with cheaper, tested and reliable SATA drives. Unless you really work with editing video or other files requiring huge sequential reads. Replacing HDD with big SSD is the most important. For speeds and the silence of the build.
SpyVsPie Posted November 15, 2019 Posted November 15, 2019 Why the 7980XE? Seems like a ton of extra cash for no benefit at all if this is just for gaming. Like just that CPU vs. a 9900k is ~an extra grand and that's not even accounting for the generally higher cost of an x299 motherboard. If you really feel like you need 30+ threads at least look at Threadripper. 1

But if its just gaming I dont know why anyone would need 16 cores and 32 threads..... Especially with a 1k price tag for just the cpu. Honestly wouldnt need anything more then a Ryzen 7 3700X or an i7 9700k. 1

This is especially true of Bethesda games. You're getting hosed on that price hinny, hard. The specs are white paper decent but with a 2TB NVME, a 2080ti and an AMD Proc; you'd be paying far far less. 1

When the drive gets fast enough that the time required to access the data is comparable to the time required to process the data, speeding the drive up even more doesn't help load times much because you're waiting on the CPU, not the drive. Skyrim loading is bottlenecking on one thread performance, even on HDD you can feel difference when changing CPU. On SATA SSD you get 100% load on one thread. Ofc with such a budget NVMe is natural choice, gains are there, but usually not so big as people think.

myuhinny Posted November 23, 2019 Author Posted November 23, 2019 Well I'm not that good at putting computers together or figuring out what I want. So I'll start looking at something with a Ryzen 7 3700X. Right now my computers starting to sound like a lawn mower with a bend blade and is noisy as fuck.
knoFear Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 If you are spending 5.5k for a system, not necessarily NEED a 18 cores CPU and I am assuming you are in the US? There are some pre-build system you can configure yourself, take a look at site like Alienware, digital storm, Falcon Northwest, ibuypower etc. But if you want to try to build your own, I use 3700x as baseline and quickly put together a list and it cost about 2.5k, and of course, you can spend more and opt for 3950x. The components is not refine, but I am sure other from the community will share some more input to help you out. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bbN8Jb Just summarize my parts list, CPU - 3700x (as baseline) Motherboard - x570 taichi ( i have this board, and it is solid. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti38JS8RuPU , and you can opt for other board that suit your need.) Memory - i simply chose a 32G G.Skill, you will have to refer to the QVL list of the motherboard of your choice. SSD - 512G Samsung 970 as system/main drive, 1TB ADATA as Game drive( i have this, it's cheap, solid and have ton of good review). You can also throw in a 1~2 TB WD Blue for old mods/misc storage. Power supply - 850W is plenty, and seasonic is a solid choice. Case/heatsink-Fan/case fan are all personal taste. Pick the one you like and maybe post it here, someone from the community will definitely help you out on that.
myuhinny Posted May 14, 2021 Author Posted May 14, 2021 Well my computers power button died last Thursday so had to finally buy a new one and went with this one. Cobratype poison gaming desktop PC - intel core i9 11900F, NVIDIA RTX 3080, 32GB DDR4, 2TB NVMe, AIO, windows 10 and a free 24” monitor. So all is fine for now other then I can't stand how windows tens start menu looks like.

myuhinny Posted May 14, 2021 Author Posted May 14, 2021 @LadySmoks Thanks for reminding me that I still need to disable Cortana but I'm not seeing it anywhere so maybe it's not installed. Nevermind I think I found it and turned it off as I found a list of 10 things to turn off in windows ten and just turned off the ones that seemed logical to turn off like Cortana and al the start menu crap.

legendarytoyou Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 Personally you should build own rig. Pre-builds tend to be goosey, at least in my opinion. Building your own system is MUCH more gratifying and is not as difficult as you think. 2

No one appears to have any on the shelf for sale.
t.ara Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 Oh, I saw you have bought your computer parts...maybe some info about win10 I can offer: For consuming is win 10 okay, for working with particulary older software which is used to create mods for bethesda games, it is not. Win 7 has lot of advantages which win 10 is not allowing because of it ´s incompatibility with any o.s. downgrade. If you need G-sync and DX12, you need win 10. If you want to work with older apps for SKYRIM or such like, better stay with Win 7. (You can try win 7 in any case and do for yourself a compare between both o.s., which will very much dependent what you do with the computer) Good Luck !
myuhinny Posted May 14, 2021 Author Posted May 14, 2021 Many things by themselves right now are expensive. I looked at a 3090 the other day and most were 2 to 3k just for that alone. The computer that I just bought the other day has a 3080 in it.
t.ara Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 The difference between the 3090 and for example the 3080 or 3070 is really not that much. I use the 3090 since the time when I used the new I9 computer, but I also tested a 3070 (which is much more compact to build in) and it is quite close. I bought both because I want a replace if I suddenly one card is being damaged. A second reason was the problem to GET a GPU from a trader during that time of the world-wide-pandemie, In that accidental case of a damage I can exchange it and keep on working. (LL´s page since a half week is horrible to be used-I get always timeout-errors after saving a post and I don ´t know if the edits are being overtaken or lost)
