Controversial: What's the Point of Gay Pride?

It might not be outlawed in the US, but that doesn't mean it isn't outlawed elsewhere in the world.

We can't force people to accommodate us, but we can resist those with less empathy and those who can't mind their own business. Pride is and has always been as much a protest as a celebration.

The US isn't some global authority to step on the throats of smaller countries for the crime of wrong-think, and protests here will have no effect there anyway.

Secondly, to be fair, it's not really a minding their own business kind of thing when parades block streets off, make messes, and create traffic jams; but I suppose that's part of the protest of it.

To be clear you are talking about ALL parades right? Inclusive of the straight pride one too. Right?

Or is it just the ones you personally have issues with?

In the american south, religious pressure is enormous and it's not passive. In africa religious pressure forms the basis of a metric shitton of society, and it sure as hell impacts gay society and sexuality, and the female clitoris is an endangered species. In Indonesia people are blowing each other up in a pretty large scale right now, and ya know the India Pakistan thing, which is kinda not even about water rights or eminent domain.

While those things aren't a big deal to average city going westerner, other places don't have the boon of civility and economic throughput to just be like "you do you" (or me if you signed the consent forms in triplicate and have a notary public's receipt), or they're just ignoring it outright in favor of religion setting the tone for society. (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Yemen)

We were specifically talking about the US.

Anyone with any common sense knows about other parts of the world being fucked up poop messes.

I would say my only problem with Pride is the same problem I have with every other SJW group type thing. Creating problems to separate already small groups into smaller groups to create mobs, all for the purpose of pushing narratives and agendas that further alienate the general public, a large portion of which are potential allies you're just scaring away, I see this a lot with black feminists and trans people. White women aren't allowed to be feminist, if you haven't gotten hormones you're not trans, if you're still figuring yourself out you're not trans, etc. This kinda thing reminds me of that XBOX conventions where they segregated people around allegedly to promote Unity and togetherness.

Women in Gaming

Black People in Gaming

LGBTQ+ in Gaming

Separate events to find common ground and be together, and yet Gaming is already something that unites everyone there but you gotta be validated by some outside source and never think for yourself I guess, you have to hang around people exactly like you, who look think and act like you because no one else will understand you, they'll attack you I guess? I have to wonder what'd've happened if someone made a White/Straight/Men in Gaming event, oh wait I know exactly what would've happened. There's videos of these events on Youtube and of course they have disabled comments because gay people, black people, LGBT people, all commented on how stupid and hypocritical it all was.

Lastly, being gay isn't anything to be proud of, that's not to say it's a bad thing, it's just something that should be treated as normal, because it is. Drawing attention to it is unnecessary, like it's the only part of a person that matters, especially when it comes to media. People that want to be treated normal act out so they can be treated normal, then complain when there's backlash. Be proud of who you are, not what you are or what you look like. You don't need a parade for that, those gatherings should really be reserved for important things, like crimes that go unpunished or rights that are being denied. You can support a movement without joining a mass of unthinking zombies.

These movements have lost traction precisely because of the bad rep certain members of them have given their "groups", though I imagine that's mostly in the US and the UK where stupid people are around to rampage around under the guise of a civil demonstration. In a lot of other countries you wouldn't even get to talk about it, you can still protest in your own ways though but I can't speak for those.

Anyway if your entire existence, that is, the only validation you get, is when you become part of a mob you need to look internally and unfuck your priorities.

With that said however St. Patty's day is the shit.

Edit: I'm noticing a trend in my rambling, I thought this was a lot shorter. Probably fit better elsewhere since it's a lot of ranting, hmmm...

pride can be anything, religion, race, sex or oblong, feel pride in what you feel you are, but if someone disagrees don't call the short sighted, because you become shortsighted, by narrowing another humans view

There is no point. Not anymore at least. Same sex marriage has been legalised some time ago, and while there will always be people who don't like anything homosexual, gays aren't the oppressed class anymore as far as law and societal facilities goes.

But this shit keeps going on because now it's about petty shit. It started off as "gays deserve equal treatment too" and ended up as "gays are special class". So they keep holding their little parades while being major nuisances to everyone around, causing property damage and howling like retarded little shitheads in an act of "protest" against an enemy that has died a long time ago. There is zero objective need to hold these parades anymore, yet here they are. Overstaying it's time, undoing everything they've done so far as their constant nagging gives the religious puritans the ammo to accuse homosexuality for all of society's problems, even the ones that are totally unrelated.

Knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing how to fight.

Dunno if that's a reply to me, but I hope that's not how I came across.

The way I see it is that questions like the OP's and discussions like this are just noise. To be ignored and not taken seriously.

As are many activists in movements like the LGBT one or feminists etc. Basically people with first world problems wasting time arguing about stuff that doesn't really concern them.

BUT at the same time feminists deserve every support they can get when fighting for women's rights in the Middle East or even in "macho" cultures like the South American ones.

And lesbians and gays still have to fear for their lives in many countries.

Also there is a huge backlash even in "progressive" societies like the US or western Europe, not to mention most other parts of the world. I deeply distrust anything coming out of conservative mouths anywhere in the world, especially religious folks. So I'm also immediately alarmed when reading a question like in the OP, asking myself what his real agenda is.

Because if he was really just annoyed by the noise like I often am then why the fuck does he care enough to post this? Is it really that hard to just ignore some people partying in a somewhat hedonistic manner? And if it isn't, what is their problem really? Makes me think that they might not be completely upfront about sth.

Not that it always has to be like this, but my first thought always will be "what are they really trying to push here?".

I've had this asked about a couple of my topics. It might be easy to say that it is just some sort of passive gay bashing or something, but maybe the op is legit concerned with the meaning of "pride" itself in this particular context? And someone answered that question quite adequately already.

A gay pride movement is something I suppose that supporters use to tell the world "Hey, we're not going to take your shit anymore!". Too bad the world has bigger fuckin concerns to care to listen.......

Well, I don't get the pride thing either. But as a reaction to being bullied or otherwise harassed for being who you are it makes a lot of sense.

And outside of metrosexual inner city circles people are often surprisingly backwards in their attitude so it might be a nice thing to realize for Kurt from Alabama (sorry about the cliché name ^^) who's undergoing "conversion therapy" that New York or LA or wherever might be a place he can escape to one day.

The whole point of the "pride" is to say "Fuck you" and stay where you were born and/or call home. No one should have to move because of who they are. Die fighting I say. Live loud and proud. :classic_tongue:

What is even more rad is listening to folks rail on about hating tribalism and all the while can't see that they are engaging in it up to the hilt in how they live their lives.  ?
