Your so called "Themepark games" has a term of its own - Simulators, Procedural simulators.

If Game Designer wants what you described at the end of your statement - the dev team will make that happen. It all depends on the game concept and even I alone can make a full interactive simulation rpg game in 4~5 years in UE4 with a good plan and resources.

Now I'm not gonna argue about game genre and its concepts, I have enough exp to look at the project and know what it is.Its just that Outer Worlds is not what it is in its "Candy Wrapper".

It's quite hard to have a straight conversation when reading comprehension is such a struggle. A themepark is the complete and total opposite of a simulation.

Yeah, cause you cant even Google the genre that came in 90's.So long boi.

Sometimes I get the feeling after Fallout 3 released, Bethesda knew they wouldn't have Skyrim ready soon enough to keep visibility up, and tasked Obsidian with Fallout New Vegas to keep Bethesda on players tongues.

Now after the direction Fallout 4 and 76 have taken, it's no surprise Obsidian was given a shot at a high profile title considering a lot of consensus is New Vegas was the superior game from a point of story engagement for players.

I've tried not to watch too much on the Outer Worlds so it feels fresh when I finally do pursue it. Like others, I've put my lot in with Steam for better or worse and can wait till it appears there, like RDR2 eventually will.

I just got around to Mordor Shadow of War and Kingdom Come on decent sale finally so I can wait on Outer Worlds.....

The game is first person only. You can see you character only in inventory screen :(

Limited budget lead to this kind of sacrifice (even on big budget having both 1st and 3rd person is something I think only BGS really did). 3rd person requires new animations (or atl least try to smoothen up animations when player suddenly do thing a NPC wouldn't bc panic) also often call for more personalization (body shape, ...) All those things require time and effort.

I prefer playing my RPGs in 3rd person but I get why this AA game doesn`t have a feature most AAA do not have (remember: cyberpunk won`t have it either,  and its fair to assume Obsidian worked on a far tighter budget than CD projekt)

Everything Awoooooo has said so far makes total, reasonable sense to me. I disagree with him about the scope for romance, but even his take on that is well founded and argued...

Anyway since he's nailed down the whole Sandbox 'v' Themepark issue, I wanna focus on the romance/sex thing... To me this whole concept of colonizing another solar system is ripe for sexy stuff. Rapid procreation would be at or near the top of the 'to do' list for any colony effort, especially since they clearly aren't getting any migration. So the way it's almost never addressed makes everything in this game seem like it's part of some Promise Keepers camping trip; temporarily isolated and divorced from reality.

I wasn't joking about the Hays Code. It feels old-timey, like Flash Gordon or something. Literally the only references to sex that I can recall are Parvati saying she doesn't want any, and some random NPC's gossiping about Celia and Sebastian being "loud" after you hook them up... I have to believe that's an artistic decision, but I'm not an old-timey audience, and to me it just ends up feeling like a cavernous plot hole.

... A hole that I really want to fill with giant, drooling alien cocks, colonial orgies and corporate prostitution... Because why else would I be here?

regarding the initial question:

I'll wait for the Steam release. By then hopefully most of the bugs will be squashed (this is an Obsidian game so it probably has tons of them).

Will definitely buy it at some point, "from the original Fallout creators" just has a certain ring to it, can't resist. And it has a SciFi setting, big plus for me.

I'll probably wait for a sale though, since I'm not that much into CRPGs anymore. Am more of a Nintendo fanboy now. ?

The story so far is pure Firefly wish fulfillment...

...

Maybe I'll try that Microsoft Game Pass thing, seems like a bargain right now.

Since Bethesda was not in charge of QA, it actually has very few bugs ?

But might be better to wait, it is a AA game that for some reason is being sold for AAA price.

And remember, by supporting game passes and such, you are supporting game industry's goal to make you pay a monthly fee for every game

I don't think that's how Game Pass works.

Seems more like I pay 4€ per month (during BETA, in the end it will probably be more like 10) and get about 100 new games to play, many of them AAA titles and therefore expensive if bought.

And in 2 years from now I guess The Outer Worlds will be removed from the catalogue and will be be replaced by sth like Red Dead Redemption 2 or Cyberpunk (fingers crossed).

So the cost per game is definitely finite, depending on when it leaves the catalogue... Of course it would be even better if they just kept adding games and didn't remove any. But then 10€ per month would be ridiculously low after a while.

This offer sounds great imo but I'm not such an active gamer anymore so waiting a year or 2 and then buying stuff on a Steam or GOG sale makes more sense for me.

I don't give a rat's ass if I own these games btw, I rarely play anything more than once and I'm not nostalgic towards games, they are consumables to me, just like movies (threw away most of my DVD collection a while ago, used up too much space).

Still subscribed for now, I mean it's one lousy Euro, maybe 5 if I don't finish the game in a month.

the game is not that bad, as for the stupid dof, blur, cromatic, ect you can turn all off,  with some edits in the engine.ini file, game looks much better/clearer then

some speeces are pretty funny, depending wo you take with you

play time well it depend, if you run true the main line only you can finish it in some hour, if you do all side quests(or so many as you can find) it can take up alot of time

npc's/player, all look pretty much the same men or woman, clothing/armors, well thee is plenty of them, but mostly some difrent color(s)

mods for weapons/armors, later in the game you will find some good 1's

nexus have some mods for the game, but mostly those dum reshade presets https://www.nexusmods.com/theouterworlds

all by all i had a good time with it

Ok, had my first major disappointment with this game, regarding the effect of creating a low intelligence character.

Seems like they just added a few [dumb] dialogue choices to the normal dialogue trees. It's kinda schizophrenic really, constantly switching between perfectly reasonable and well articulated answers and stupid ones, and you can't escape doing that if you try to roleplay a dumbass because they were too lazy to add dumb choices to many of the longer dialogue interactions

.

Bummer, I wasn't even looking for sth as glorious as this (for the funniest part skip to 5:20):

The way they handled it in The Outer Worlds is very retarded, completely breaking any suspension of disbelief.

If they half-assed more features like this then I can already tell I will hate this.

... Restarting with a smooth talking genius char, these are always fun.

no it says there a cc in it but its in first person which is a turn off i refuse to play games that have cc and dont have third person in it

Bought it, at AAA price.  What did I get?  An AA game (at best) with a totally linear story line aimed at the acne infested young male crowd.   No character development, piss poor plot.  ' Superficial' gives this game too much credit.

The only good thing that can possibly be said is that it lacks any real bugs.  And given the limited scope of game play, that was a really low bar to achieve...  BTW, it doesn't need the epic launcher for other than 1st time install and for patching.  It will launch from the local .exe.

Finally getting the player ship off the ground was a fun thing to experience and some of the game was kind of fun but that lack of 3rd person camera seemed odd considering if you wait long enough idle you will get a vanity cam of your character. I don't see why it would be so hard to make 3rd anims when every character you see animated is already 3rd person? I could have done without the lesbo date from hell clogging up most of the game with pointless fetch quests and stupid dialogue. I think they wanted to make it a gay date from hell but were afraid to push it that far. Least they could have done is at one point had the player ship rocking and shaking with some muffled lesbo sounds coming from inside it just after exiting the ship and all the other npcs lounging around on the ship would have filed outta there with funny looks on their faces one at a time. Could have made it so you couldn't enter the ship again for a while and had to go somewhere else on groundbreaker for a while.  The cleaning bot could have made some jokes later on while cleaning up after that propaganda shit was finally over with.

Some parts of the space map are unable to be accessed so looks like DLC is coming or it was just filler to make the game look bigger and that would suck. I hope someone rips all the high fashion from this game and ports them to fallout 4 soon.

So far this has been quite fun to play.

There's much more and much much better dialogue than in a Bethesda RPG, even though they really do the "corporate greed turns workers into zombies" angle to death.

I like the companions so far, and I somewhat like the blatant Firefly ripoff with them and the ship (but I fully expect to be annoyed by it before this is over).

What I don't like are combat and the skill system though.

You don't have any incentive to explore the different locations, the quest markers lead you where you need to go and you don't need all the stuff you can find on bodies and in containers. Combat on hard is laughably easy so no need for consumables, optimized or upgraded weapons or good armor. Just follow the quest markers and enjoy the story if you can.

And different skill sets don't mean different gameplay experiences, it's just maybe an additional door you can unlock to sneak by some guards you would otherwise have to kill, or use your highest speech skill for the optimal outcome of some dialogues, and that's about it.  Lots of wasted potential there, pity.

Atm the story, NPCs and setting are what keeps me playing. Hope the next planet will be less colorful, Terra 2 was like an LSD trip.

Nope, Monarch is even more colorful ?

It has that "coral reef above water" design.

I don't see the issue with the combat, you have bullet time, dialogue skills affect enemies, and you can make headshots explode enemies so that their friends get damaged and freaked out. And perhaps i'm just a shitty FPS player, but hard is hard enough for me. Or maybe it is because i'm playing a sniper with semi-auto handguns and rifles with physical damage weakness flaw.

The perks and skills are mostly quite boring, and it suffers greatly from lack of content and variety.

Still better than Fallout 4. As if that was an achievement

I learned that Obsidian is planning to add mod support. I don't have high hopes for that like I didn't have high hopes for TW3 mod support. But if it works out even half as well as mod support for Skyrim, I'll be pleasantly surprised and will consider buying the game once its price drops down to AA-game levels--and it's not an Epic exclusive anymore.

The two most overpowered weapons are N-RAY shock cannon 2 and plasma launcher 2 I kept getting hit with that dam N-RAY shock cannon 2 at the end of the game so I just walked past them with the shroud thing. The final boss robot thing went down pretty fast with that plasma launcher 2. Just let it get stuck trying to run over your companions and shoot it til it drops. I never used any of the drugs in the game except the ones that increased mind abilities just before convos that required speech checks.

Greetings all.

I've noticed that, on The Outer Worlds' website, there's a number of different purchase options that are not Epic Store. Does this mean that, if I buy it on one of the alternative platforms (Humble Bundle, Windows Store, Official Private Division Store and a couple others) I'll be able to play it without the blasted Epic game launcher?

Chances are the humble version will still require the epic launcher as it is likely to be a key for the epic store, though the windows store will require the windows store launcher rather than the epic one, no idea about the private division store as I never heard of that before.

its likely the only ones that wont require epic are any console releases. even if it was on steam it would likely be like "requires third party: epic store" like the ea games that needed origin. i fully expect borderlands 3 to pull that crap in april too when it hits steam.

you can run the game straight from the URE4 executable if you delete all DLLs inside the exec folder.

Should be in \Indiana\Binaries\Win64
