Technically speaking, it is Inigo. He is the most advanced in that league.

Storywise it is Vilja.

Fitting to my current role playing are Ciri and Triss Merigold from The Witcher universe. Though they are all quite overpowered and I need to tone them down a bit.

If you just want a few mercenaries and underlings to act as your personal Red Shirts, you could always use Dragon Fodder or the Louis Cultivation Kit.

Personal redshirts is the opposite of what I'm thinking of. More like vulnerable characters you have to escort, since worrying about someone besides yourself makes combat more complex and interesting.

By the way, there's also a built-in function to recruit any generic replaceable characters (city guards etc.) as temporary followers.

Vilja and M'rissi are both mortal by default. Of course, if you don't care for either follower, then they would only fulfill half of the criteria which you set forth.

Yeah, I mean they still need to be good as companions - there has to be a reason for you to be bringing them along, after all! Nazeem is utterly useless in a fight, but you probably wouldn't want him following you the whole game, and if he did there's not exactly much incentive for you to save him from even the first pack of bandits eager to gank him.

Vilja is a good companion, but I already that she's not an NPC I personally like to have around (and she does fight anyway - she's not helpless). M'rissi, I haven't played myself... heard good things and bad ones.

Inigo, Ambriel and Serana.

Inigo because he seems like a true friend. His comments are funny, his appearance is pretty cool and he isn't annoying as hell in combat.

Ambriel, because not only the storywriting intrigues me (tho it is mostly taken and converted stuff from star wars, it's still interestingly designed), but also her comments and dialogues are very very good implemented into the game. It really fits. When travelling with Ambriel, I feel like I have a real companion with me.

Serana is practically the same reason I explained for Ambriel. Plus I love Kate Beckinsale. So yea. Easy.

Rumarin from Interesting NPCs because of his jokes. Then it would be Gorr and Zora from the same mod - again, I like their personalities.

Gorr and Callen for me. Have you ever done the horker meat quest?

Yup. And have you pulled a prank on Maven with that Forsworn woman you meet in a company of Orc in the Reach?

Man, 3DNPC is amazing. The only thing I've never done yet is its main quest due to all its requirements. I'm planning to do this on the current play-through.

Azog, https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/86441/ cause he's just a badass looking mofo.

Alec the blade. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/9989/ just an awesome character. unfortuantely he died about 10 levels back but next play through he'll be back.

i also love using "Clean up your corpse's" so you can give your followers a proper burial. this is Alec's funeral "Rest in Sovngarde mighty Friend"

Although 3DNPC add's a lot of awesome Npc's i hate that they are all essential and i think they kind of hi-jack my game. so i don't use it.

but i did like Gorr.

I love Kaidan.  He has a very good storyline and side quests, and comments on lots of your adventures both main quest and side quests. He's not bad to look at, and the voice actor is great.  Love that sexy british voice, omg.  He and Lucien have some custom banter that is hilarious.  Never a dull moment when adventuring with them.  For those men out there, Kaidan can swing both ways :) He will comment appropriately on your weapon prowess, and he's not over the top or too sweet.  I've probably played through the most games with him.  You can replace his armor and weapons with upgraded ones, and can refine his armor with your smithing skill.  He has his own horse, and you can summon him if he gets lost.  He has good idles - and...he can read books to the DB, which is a great feature for immersion.  I have no complaints about Kai.  On the downside, Kaidan is a tad overpowered if that bothers you, and he jumps in front of everything to protect you which works well if you play a mage.

This time around, I decided to give Bishop a try.  I would like to see some improvements with Bishop, but he has potential as far as being the most immersive (*translation* sex, birth experience for DB).  His backstory is also interesting, and more comes out, especially after marriage and having a kid.  There were a few "aha!" moments that were a pleasant surprise.  He's good looking, and I like the voice actor - he fits Bishop's personality to a "T".  On the downside -  There is no real "resting" with Bishop.  If you say "let's rest here" he just stands there like a statue.  Guy is so tightly wound, he never sleeps.  Although he is a diamond in the rough, I think some of his dialogue with the DB could vary from blatant sexual comments and innuendos.  Once you marry him, it's fun to watch him talk with your kid, but he still seems to treat the DB like a fucktoy, excuse my french.  Even the side characters all just look at the DB as a possible fuck.  Look, the DB can shout you into a million pieces, has slain countless dragons, and you say "My lady, you do not deserve the brute you are with"  excuse me?  DB is not a delicate little flower, she is badass.  So yeah some of the sidequest dialogue is a tad cheesy, and for Bishop yes, your DB wife is hot, but she wants a bit more wooing.  However, stuff like that I think could be fixed fairly easily.  Another thing is you can't improve his armor, and the AR on his chestpiece is 70.  Depending on what alternate armor you want to put on him, you may have some missing limbs if the armor shows skin.  Not sure why.  Also, because Bishop is "following" you, you can't have any other vanilla followers (like the priestess of Azura), whereas, with Kaidan, you can.

For a nonsexual companion, Lucien's backstory is also very, very good, and his banter is so funny.  I cracked up when I teamed him with Kaidan, or taught him to sneak..."Shhh....quiet Lucien....sneeeeeeakkky Lucien...." you can dress him in the armor of your choice, and if you have him wait, he may path around the area, but is never too far.  Best to leave him in a tavern.  He can read to you as well.  I think he also has some custom dialogue with inigo and a few others, might want to check him out.

Sofia is my number one choice if I take a side kick... I mean really, how can you not love a spunky, witty, full of herself kind of girl who gets drunk of one ale? She's a dream come true for most guys IRL (and she probably likes a bit of the bestiality, since you find her in the stables... naked!)

And Acalypha(?)... I love her voice, her look and her magic! very unique.

Being a woman Sofia is one of the few fleshed out female companions who does not annoy me to no end. Lydia with amorous adventures is cute too.

I have three followers that I love to use in the vanilla game.  Lydia, Illia and Jenassa.

Outside of that, my favourite follower mods are Caesia Follower, just for the custom voice, Sofia because she's hilarious and Rupert the Teddy Bear.  He also acts as a nice backpack when you don't want him to follow you (also, his little legs can't always keep up to you, so he just ports to your back).

Misty Skye and her sister Summer were good while their quests were still going.  But after a while the things they say can be a tad repetitive and grating.

Lydia & Serana.

Yeah, both of them.

You may think I'm greed, but I really can't make any choice between them.

Lydia was my first love. After my first adventure alone, she appeared like a treasure of the whole Skyrim and swore allegiance to me, I'm not alone anymore.

Serana was my female confidant. She had the most beautiful sleeping face in the whole Skyrim, after a whole DLC adventure, there was no barrier between us anymore.

If you insist that I make a choice...

Children make choices, as an adult, I want all of them!!!

Serana, part is because I like her voice. Its my favorite VA. Her voice is also unique compare to all other vanilla companion which is just reused voice from many NPC in Skyrim.

For modded companion. Minerva and Acalypha, again simple because I like their custom voiced.
