I think Sony's stance on mods has more to do with potential security holes created in their network; it's all too easy to insert a backdoor to a system or load a virus if you know how. Microsoft, OTOH, seems to revel in security holes. Look at Win 10!

Without GECK, Fallout would be just another game put away and left to rot. And without unofficial patches and GECK, BSG wouldn't be where they are right now.

Okay, okay.... that last part is a lie. But most gamers wouldn't be supporting their rotten pc version. Console gamers don't care. It's all the same to them so it would be because of the console BSG is still alive if that was the case.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Bethesda is taking a huge risk with bringing mod support to consoles. They've already screwed up big time by not having everything figured before the game went live. Console modding relies exclusively on computer players who own the game to make all the mods. This is a case of needing to satisfy both sides. So far they've failed to satisfy computer players with a product that appeals exclusively to console gamers' sensibilities and styles of play.

To make matters worse, console mods will most likely have to be loaded through Bethesda.net to work. If that's the case then computer players will still be favored in terms of quantity and quality of available mods. Bethesda will have a chokehold on what mods console players can and can't use. That may be exactly what they want; in America it's fine to have gory, extreme violence in popular media but overt sexuality is very taboo. Ensure that no mods that dare cross the line into "adult" territory get popular attention and the image of a "family friendly" company is preserved. Just ignore sites like this one. The Nexus and Bethesda both try hard to.

From what an official from Bethesda has said... The only limits to mods for the consoles will be Adult Mods and Mods which are Copyright Infringement. Though, they did added that Halo-based mods might be an exception for XONE players, due to Microsoft owning both...

And I'm perfectly fine with this. I don't like Adult mods so will not bother them, and I don't enjoy using mods which would go against the Fallout-theme and lore.

As for Bethesda taking a huge risk... Bethesda has done a lot of risks for Fallout 4 in general, and this mod support for consoles is their biggest risk. Honestly, this is a good thing and I'm glad Bethesda has finally gotten them to agree. I don't see why console players shouldn't get mods after-all. So good job on Bethesda with that, and I would gladly wait for the CK to come out if it means this is happening.

Hmm

April of 2017

or

Creation Kit DLC for $9.99

or

some sort of delays

You people are really impatient, geezus.

Its like you can't wait, Bethesda for sure is planning something big with the release of CK. Its not like you can release a toolkit which allows you to modify game in almost every aspect in the few minutes, its a lot of work, not only technical difficulties.

And it's still April for another 22 days.  No one said "April 1st" (and if they did, that date should have been a BIG clue about the accuracy...)

Why are you even registered with Lovers Lab if you don't like adult mods? That's pretty much the bread and butter of this site.

I wouldn't take anything Bethesda says as being true. Either about what mods will and will not be allowed on their distribution network or about console users being able to load mods outside of said network. You also cut out the part where I mentioned how Bethesda didn't have things squared away before releasing the game. It seems like a grievous mistake to make plans to support console modding without making sure both Sony and Microsoft would go along with the idea. Not to mention not having the basic framework for Bethesda.net ready from the start. In fact Sony still hasn't said whether or not they will even support modding on the PS4. In very real ways, Bethesda put the cart before the horse.

Also the limitation on mods usable on consoles goes beyond just a matter of how they can be loaded. Several mods for Skyrim and previous Fallout titles require third-party programs (Script Extender, Papyrus, JScripts, etc.) that may not be compatible with consoles. I'm not a coder so I can't say for certain whether that's true or not. There's also the question of processing power required by both large numbers of mods and mods that are large in and of themselves. Console hardware and firmware is more or less fixed in nature and homogenous; that's why they're so stable compared to computers. But that also means their CPUs and GPUs can't be upgraded. There will invariably be a limit based on system resources for consoles. How high or low that limit is remains to be seen. Not to mention the issues that will invariably come up when mods are added to consoles. It's a given there will be bugs, overlooked issues, and incompatibility problems at first.

I agree it's a good thing they're trying. But they've made such big mistakes it's hard to remain optimistic. And the wait for the GECK is rather long. It's been five months since the game went live. Even Skyrim's CK was ready within eight weeks. This time they've deliberately delayed release until they got their distribution network for consoles up and going. It makes no sense for the official toolset to be delayed to the users who will actually be able to use it just to accommodate those will only use the end products made by it.

I want to say that GECK is more than likely going to be released when console modding is finally official and ready to commence. It's going to be fucked up if they nerf GECK because of console and release that dumb down version for PC. You know, like them and other game developing companies already do with their games.

Tried out Defeat. Wanted to see if I can change up the settings and other things, possibly modifying the Defeat mod, to make it so I can just tie up Bandits, and other humanoid enemies instead of just flat-out killing them all. Didn't work out as planned and since i have an account now for these forums, must've well use it.

They don't have to dumb down the CK they just have to set the consoles to ignore certain things changed by the CK for example body mesh changes etc.

@Dagren

Why should we wait? They continue to make things we don't like and ignore any complaints we make while a whole group of non employees tirelessly fixes all the company fuckups for FREE and can only get started fixing this latest turd of a game when the CK is released. Just think how long it will take arthmoor and the others to fix all of the bugs that are fixable by them in F4? How many years will it take? Time is the fire in which arthmoor burns! how many years do we have left of those guys willing to fix beth bugs? after they are done/retired/bored whatever thats it beth is done in the eyes of the modding community because who else will have such dedication and time to fix anything? The bugs in skyrim were bad enough but the bugs in F4 are really bad. Beth will most likely ignore the bugs with the merchants for example and other really annoying bugs.

Without the unofficial patches we are left to random users posting fixes here and there that get lost in the sea of crap texture mods and shitty stat change mods over at nexus. I don't think anyone has the time that arthmoor and crew have on their hands.

That's something I hadn't even thought about.. Yeah third party software IS a big part of some of the better mods that came out for previous games, not just adult the mods. It will be interesting to see how they deal with that side of things.

It's technically possible to have 3rd-Party Programs but it would require a lot more work, and more convincing to Microsoft and Sony, as we're talking about converting a Program to the XONE and PS4 software, which attaches itself to the Fallout 4 game. The likely-hood of that happening is very low though, so for the most part. I wouldn't expect these 3rd-Party Programs to be happening for the console users.

Luckily, great mods can still be used without them. I've gotten plenty of great mods for Skyrim and Morrowind, which don't even require the Script Extenders, and such myself.

Another thing I probably should've noted is the limitations... Most likely, mods which uses ONLY high advanced graphics (be it models or textures) which would be too heavy most likely will not work for sure on XONE/PS4. Same thing with any cell that has WAY TOO MANY OBJECTS within it... But, for the most part, a good chunk of mods should be work-able and accept-able.

So, either way, it's a good start.

Just appeared on nexus:

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/11800/?

EDIT: hidden almost immediately.

What was it?

It claimed to be the GECK itself, with a screenshot showing it as as Creation Kit - Fallout Edition with a very similar logo to the Skyrim CK. It was uploaded by a user with a name something like MagicMike(some numbers) which is a name I've seen somewhere relating to Bethesda unless my memory is playing tricks on me.

It certainly wouldn't be where I'd expect them to release it, but I thought I'd post the link anyway. It was taken down in about 5 minutes, gone before I could download it.

I have a feeling the geck will be uploaded soon, By a beta tester...

Apparently one or two have tried already on the Nexus, but as one would expect it was reportedly taken down withing minutes of being posted.. either that or it had something to do with posting a mod made with the GECK beta.

Damn. I really hope someone leaks it soon!

Doesn't need to be leaked just sign up for the beta and follow the Beth post by the looks of things. I'll just wait for it to be out of beta myself.

Downloading a leaked version from who knows where is probably just asking for malware.

Not to mention that anyone who leaks it is going to face some consequences. Lendova's link mentioned a non-disclosure agreement.

How much trouble?

Huge @ss legal fees from the company's mass quantity of lawyers (American courts are like mobile games; they're pay to win) and time behind bars with that big guy getting between your cheeks in the showers whether you dropped the soap or he forced you to drop it. Basically this; don't break the NDA, or face severe life ruining consequences from a company that has plenty of money and lawyers to make your remaining days a living hell.

They have every legal right to do that, but I doubt they would, being that its a free product and so close to release.

And they are offering legal channels to get it, so its likely many people who can't get it from those channels are running pirated versions of the game.

But anyone uploading it or posting links could likely to be banned from the site the did it on.

Their actions wouldn't have a thing to do with the fact that it's a free product or how soon it's coming out. In America, lawsuits are all about petty ego. And while Todd Howard doesn't come across as the ultra-petty type to me, Pete Hines does. He works in Marketing, after all.
