Redflyingmonkey Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 Alright so ... Triss and the Witch Hunters ... damn, that was...an unpleasant experience. First I went "guns-blazing", but...I reloaded to see what the more "subtle approach would bring. Not pleasant, actually quite painful to sit through (even though you don't see anything)...But I guess I'll stick with this unpleasant way of solving the quest, somehow it makes for a more interesting story...and at least the end was rather satisfying. Sorry Triss though...I hope they got good manicurists in Novigrad... Couldn't handle it myself, I'm a pussy. Destroyed the whoresons without even thinking about it, and Dijkstra wasn't happy ... I don't think i'm cut out for Dark Fantasy, way too mellow Totally get you though, that one scene and one other concerning a certain woman too (you'll see what I'm talking about very soon) made me actually angry. First game in a while that really shows violence on women in that way. Even if I really like how masterfully it is written and staged, two of those is way enough for one game. Any more would've been almost too much for me lol Fuck the story is nearing the end and I'm terrified I fucked up something, said something wrong in a conversation somewhere, forgot to save one person, or kill another, or let some people go when I should've stopped them ... I'm replaying the whole 95 hours of gameplay in my head trying to figure out each of the "big" choices, and imagining their consequences. Usually I can pretty much see the big picture without needing to read spoilers, I've been writing stories for a long time so I can pretty much guess where the author wants to take it if I concentrate long enough. Like in DA, ME, Heavy Rain, SWTOR, Alpha Protocol I found most of the consequences pretty obvious and wasn't very surprised by them. But for this game, I have NO fucking clue man. Completely lost. One choice can lead to something I had no intention to do or see, and since I absolutely refuse to load save games to make another choice once I've decided, it's pretty scary.
ChancellorKremlin Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 This is probably my fault for reading this thread, but guys (and gals!) I have to ask, please keep any quest/narrative spoilers safely behind SPOILERS! I've already eyed one or two story elements spoilt here because of that. Even better if you prephrase it like, *if you're doing quest X" or "btw, at point Y this happens..." etc. Have to say, this game makes minor quests feel epic, and major quests are just something else. Everything fits together, from the music, to the animations, to the writing, and the design. It's an absolute beauty, and I'm loving every second of it!
Redflyingmonkey Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 Hehe, if thats what you think. Well. we shall see. just remember when an NPC says "I need you to help me later" is ussually a pretty big deal. Arhh man as if I wasn't stressed out already Will keep an eye out though, already messed up something A sub quest about Logos' son, tried to get some coin from him instead of just telling him his father sent me to help him out. He died at the coronation, must be because of my choice perhaps ? I don't think I've yet to make the big ass decisions, but I don't want to rush it. Seems like important main story NPCs disappear once you finish the game and I don't wanna finish my sub quests in an empty world without Yennefers or Vesemirs ... Gonna tackle the last quest once I've finished everything, all contracts etc ... This is probably my fault for reading this thread, but guys (and gals!) jxm Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Alright, nothing story-related then ... So I like to make some moral enemies now and say: I am not too thrilled by the fighting and level-system somehow. I mean, it's nicely bloody, finishers never grow old etc... But when I read reviews mentioning "revamped fights", and more "strategic" than in W2? Well, I guess I am doing it still wrong then...all I ever do (on Broken Bones difficulty) is roll around like an idiot, and I only dare to parry etc when there is only one guy left. I also don't really see any focus for me in the talent-tree...I assign points for medicre percentages here and there, change some spells to be different but...but it hardly feels like a proper reward for levelling most of the time. I actually liked the talent-tree in W2 a bit better But really, all I need is Quen, Tawny Owl and Swallow..maybe an Oil now and then...I still die a lot when hit in the back though, if I am to reckless, but other than this ... drink, slash, roll, and repeat? Anyone else similar feelings, or did I qualify myself as the one idiot on the net criticizing something about Witcher 3 (apart from that stupid downgrade-debate..)? Could live with that though

Anyone else similar feelings, or did I qualify myself as the one idiot on the net criticizing something about Witcher 3 (apart from that stupid downgrade-debate..)? Could live with that though Get one point on your third row in fighting skills, one in each of the first two columns. Fighting is completely different after that. Unlock special moves, a sort of dance of death with fast attacks that hurts everyone around, and the other is a super charged attack that can one shot humans or small monsters. When you get those, all your gameplay changes to try and break your opponent's concentration and deliver the special attacks. Plus it makes you really look out for your armor stats, stamina becomes primordial and evolved quen is a fucking beast. I'm making some sweet combos, discovering a new one for each fight. For example I got a stagger effect on my crossbow and a fight goes : Dance of death thing in the middle of the enemy group, evolved quen, quen explodes and stun nearby enemies, super power attack of death to the one in front of me, crossbow bolt to stagger the guy next to him, fasts attacks and executions. Dodge back a bit to get your stamina, and go back in the fight. Or Quen>Power attack>Execution one>Sweeping Aard>Execute one>Hold Quen to make that bubble thing and defend from the guy behind you>Dance of death, done. Also runes. Runes change your life. Stun runes and burning runes especially. Ah and fighting on death march with only a tunic now, it's pretty nervous. But no, there are some things that need polishing and you're right to point them out, those are relevant points you're making I don't see why anyone would pester you for that. Knowing CDPR they'll bring a new gameplay element in the next extensions to keep things fresh, plus it seems like they have some plans for the next patches.
SpleenSerene Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Haven't played in a long time but what I noticed on this thread may push me to try Witcher.
...0... Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 On Hard level it's not that easy fighting several enemy's at ones you realy need to think it through and use what have at your disposal or you die alot. So simple use quen and dodge don't do it all the time. Unless your playing on newbee level difficulties? Or you are extremely good and im just a nub 60hours now 25% done still love this game.
Redflyingmonkey Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Fuck almost 130 hours of playing ?? Is that even possible or is the play time bugged on my version ? I'm nearing the end, it must be like in two or three quests if I'm not mistaken ... SO don't want it to end that I'm taking a break. Maybe read all the books and finish the game in 3 weeks or so...
SpleenSerene Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Soon™ Omg really? They're gonna hit Witcher too.

Nah, I play "Broken Bones", so no regeneration (which is mostly annyoing though with the constant fumbling in the inventory to eat and drink, they could make that maybe more convieninet to in the future). And I die a lot, or at least I did in the beginning. The only real problem I have is really managing adrenaline. I never seem to have enough, and I hardly use it for anything else than Quen...I am lvl 16 now, and I don't really feel I have accomplished much in terms of Character-skills...and lvl 16 seems to be almost halfway through to the max level... Ah anyway, something else...how do you define your choice of weapon/armour etc...pure damage-rating as most important? Or special stats (freeze, burning etc, never seems to do much) ... and rather light/medium/heavy? I am so undecided I go medium (mostly griffin set) for now, and I somehow tend to judge my gear mostly for its price (to determine whether or not its "better" than my previous stuff etc... Oh, and after about 30 hours or so I should probably visit the Skellige Islands by now...damn, only the (sadly slightly boring/dragging-on) quest about Dandelion I still didn't finish. Bloody Baron really hooked me, but this one, it has its moments, I mentioned some, but...overall I wish it would not take so long...Bah, whatever, at least Radovid I will probably not give what he wants from me, though it'll probably bite my arse later on, but I don't care.. Radovid, ruler of cuckoo-wacky-wacky-land...

Radovid, ruler of cuckoo-wacky-wacky-land... Adrenaline and Stamina are not the same thing. Adrenaline are the three little bars on the left of your Wolf head, Stamina is the yellow curved bar with your Sign. The more you get skills, the more stamina you have, and stamina regen too. The more adrenaline you have, the more you'll make critical hits and the more damage you'll make. You gain it by dodging attacks at the last second and hitting enemies without getting hit yourself. The coolest skills use adrenaline points once you unlock them. About armor, heavy armor is for adrenaline points generation/resistance/critical hit damage, medium armor is for sign intensity/vitality, light armor is for attack power and critical chance. Which means if you want to hit hard, you go for the light armor, and if you're going for a prolonged fight without loosing too much hp, you'll go for heavy. And if you go for troll mage build, you take griffin armor and upgrade it to the max. From what I've heard once you have enough points in the Sign tree you can fight only using Signs (don't miss the evolved version of Signs, you need to hold on your Sign hotkey once you unlock it (second row)). As for runes, I ruin myself buying them atm. You need to stack runes of the same stat so you get more chance to proc whatever you're building. Right now I must have around +50% Stamina regen on my swords + a nice crossbow I have. Had to that decoctions and potions, and you're basically rarely out of stamina. Also since I seem to be a bit further along than you on the game, I'd advise not to spread your skill points on Broken Bones or Death March. Just stick to one tree, swords signs or alchemy. That way you'll get more bonus from the same school with the mutagens and you'll be able to access the evolved versions of your spells and attacks sooner. Last word : grab your ass with both of your hands for the end of that Dandelion quest line, it's definitely not what it seems.
jxm Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Hm...in regards to the skill tree some, probably stupid questions: So atm I have about five points in both fast and heavy early skills. And from what I understand I need to drag all those skills to the right of the screen (where I could link them with mutagens) to become used/active? Now first fast attcks (muscle memory) is applied automatically every time I use fast attacks, or is it actually a skill that needs to be activated (I have 30 hours on the game and I am still unsure about such things, indeed), and if I go now on "precise blows", does it stack, does it get replaced, is it worth it...? That's really my little gripe with the game, I have no clue whatsoever where to spend my points, and I never feel much effect of them either (except prolonged potion time, which seems to effect water/milk etc as well, if I am not mistaken...)
Redflyingmonkey Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Yep, you need to place them in the slots for them to be activated. Even the "passives". But there are enough slots at level 16/20 to have a decent build. I'd say if you want swordfighting in primary and you're level 16, burn 14 points in the sword skills tree from the get go. Then 1 point on Axii for dialogues (raise it to 3 until level 18), and 1 point for that 500 vitality boost. Try to get the third row on the first two columns of sword skills as it's really fun to use evolved power attacks. For Signs, get 9 points for Igni, get 5 points for Quen, 1 on Axii, and 1 for the 500 vitality. Continue to spend points for Igni and give 8 points max for Quen. Then when you're satisfied with your igni, you might wanna try Yrden. If you evolve Yrden on the higher levels with a proper gear, you're kind of OP, which is good and bad. Like it drops a rune on the floor which electrocutes enemies every X seconds, and with pretty damn good damage too. You can just sit back and poke them from time to time, and execute one once Yrden's done the job. For alchemy, I have no idea. Only took the potion boost there, so I wouldn't know. The boost is nice tho, 5% instant health regen when you consume a potion, that really helps in the middle of a fight when Sparrow just takes too damn long. Igni + Igni intensity armor runes + Griffin Armor + Sign Intensity weapons + Sign intensity potions. You are now a flamethrower, as now when you hold the Sign key, he keeps throwing flames that burn through armor/barriers/shields. You can get back your skill points by buying a potion from Keira (if she's not gone in your game yet), or from a merchant in Novigrad, forgot where he's at. It's 1000 gold tho. But really if you wanna have fun with combat, stick to one skill family. Hybrids on this game get owned on high difficulties ...
charlievoviii Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 I don't like such enhancements but if someone wants to check it out -> http://www.moddb.com/addons/sweetfxreshade-preset Here's the preview vid damn the buetint virus is going crazy. look like shit.
trpd Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 You get extra points from power shrines and maybe somewhere else too ? at 17lv i have ~25 points i think. The 3rd row is when you start feeling differance - as in getting a skill /effectthat you didn't have before I do agree however it is all confusing - talents and gear seem just to add some misc passive bonuses that you often don't realise how good they are - like +10% Aard - what does it do ? Then chance to apply bleeding - how good is bleeding even ? And when you got the damage resistances - how they work ? Say like slashing resist does it only apply to humanoids ? shouldn't monsters attacking with claws be doing slashing damage too ? Then if armor got both slashing and monster damage reduction ,.. I've been using just drops for that reason, didn't even place runes. But it is fine, on my first playthrough i focus on story and learn how things work along the way. @carnal - just finished it. Pretty heavy stuff for RPG genre. Loving sidequests in this game.
the_mess Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 damn the buetint virus is going crazy. look like shit. That's why I don't like such enhancements. These days almost every game has some tint over it, for some reason. What happened with the "true colors" ? :\
SpleenSerene Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I installed it. This game is very hard, even on low difficulty settings.

Is carnal sins the same quest as Dandelion which you mentioned? Some other person here said something about Triss getting hurt? What happens? And are they side quests to pick from a billboard? I'm about to start a new game because during the last 4 game [lay hours I got my ass handed to me.

Yeah, it's after Cabaret, which is at the end of the Novigrad mission so you won't see it in a while (maybe in like 30/40 hours of play time if you do all the second quests before having the level for Novigrad). Triss' is another thing, not gonna spoil you but it's cold. Like super cold.

trpd Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 I installed it. This game is very hard, even on low difficulty settings. Anything particular you have problem with? Some opponents require certain tactics or you get raped - like wraits and expcially their boss versions you need to fight in Yrden. Hey! Guest Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 So I did the Cabaret thing (entire quest line)... can you tell me what you saw because I did not really find it as 'shocking' as you did.

Guest Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 Yea, I did. Not sure what is so dark and gritty. You hyped it so much and it the end I was like... "That was it?"
