It occurs to me that there are some things in Skyrim that I may not take full advantage of. As a result I've posted a poll to see how others respond to these selfsame things.

Please feel free to comment, as usual, on your ideas or the poll results.

The poll will close automatically in 3 weeks.

Thanks for your participation

I only ever read the Blood Scroll as it's required to kill Harkon and take my rightful place as the most powerful vampire in Tamriel.

The only time I use a pickaxe is to get through the blocked doorway in Gyldenhull Barrow.

I never cook. Why would I? I need blood, not soup!

I ride my horse 24/7 and never walk by foot. It's the fastest way to travel around Skyrim.

It's hard to tell in general, because mostly I'm RP'ing my characters as hard as I can.

-> Meaning: except for cooking, I selected always the middle option.

Examples:

  • If my character can't really read, I deny the usage of scrolls.
  • Mines are (should) usually be limited by the Jarl, so I don't mine for myself, but get employed by the mine's owner and get paid for that.
  • Horses are expensive (should be) so unless I'm very rich or at least a noble Thane in some holds, I don't buy a horse (silly Skyrim prices, far too cheap)

Something along these lines

Never rode shadowmere, I have a custom horse from Nexus (mithril) it's a pain in the arse to get him (fight through hordes of bandits etc) then once I have him I hardly ever ride him although I think he has different ideas.

I usually sell scrolls asap buuuut this one time as I was lvl9 and needed some help I decided to try one, it was a "resurrect a dead body to fight for you permanently" so I tried it on a lvl40 Commander (skyrim at war) he went on to murderise a whole town and then I got a message "your goddess has left you" :(

I hate horses...

I was not using Horse even in MMO games like BDO or NeverWinter...

and ofc. i was not using Horse in Wither 3...

I love to use Vehicles... Cars, Bikes... and my most fav. Heli <333 any flying machine <333

But horses?... its ugly, dirty and annoying shit... i simply hate those creatures...

I like cooking and Survival things like Gathering Wood or Stone, i just like Survival...

I also have my own Mods and Scripts that makes my Survival more interesting...

But i dont understand that part with Scrolls...

You mean Magic Scrolls?... to cast magic spell?... they are useless AF... i never even pickup them to sell them...

and if somehow i got any Scroll... i just sell it as soon as i find NPC that want to buy that crap from me...

i either use Bow / Weapons for Spells...

Scrolls were good idea in for example Gothic 2

in Gothic 2 Scrols were really powerful and useful thing in game

there was 6 Levels of Magic you can learn

Level 1 was weak but easy to learn and use

Level 6 was powerful but cost insane amount of mana and Skill points

for example Fire Rain was cost of 100 Mana ( thats worth of 10 levels ) ( or around 20 levels with DLC )

So Scroll that cost only 5 Mana is rly good compared to Runes

Runes You can use as many times you want, but they cost a lot more Mana and You need specific Magic Level for them

Scrolls You can use any times you want and they are cheap... but they are one time use

There was also one other important use of Scrolls...

in order to make Perm Spell ( Rune ) you need

- Clear Rune

- Scroll with Spell you want to use on that Rune

- Some materials to craft that Rune

for example to craft Fire Bolt rune You needed:

 - 1 Sulfur + 1 Empty Rune + 1 Fire Bolt Scroll

So ye.... in Gothic 2 Scrolls had price... Scrolls was rly useful in early game...

But in Skyrim?... Scrolls are nothing more than trash :x...

//Edit:

i just want to tell something more about Mana in Gothic 2...

Because in difference to Skyrim and many other modern games... in Gothic 2 You don't regenerate mana over time...

You used Your mana?... You have to Eat / Sleep or drink Mana potions to restore Your Mana...

so using Magic was not that cheap...

Maybe thats why Gothic 2 is one of my fav. games...

not many ppl know this game but Gothic 2 is really good game... if You like HARD but FAIR games...

for example Darks Souls games THINKS thye are hard... they are not...

and DS is very unfair in many cases... Gothic 2 is Hard... but always Fair ;x...

I use a horse regularly once I have one, but I usually don't bother to get one until Shadowmere or Arvak. I enjoy walking around anyway so a horse isn't important for travel. Mining I use somewhat often, mostly in the early game for the sake of resources and money making. I'll mine useful higher level materials if I stumble across them but I don't put any kind of priority on it.

As for scrolls and cooking, I never use either. As far as I'm aware, cooking is only useful for healing with food and I generally use spells and, in an emergency, potions for that. Cooking just feels worthless to me. Scrolls I mostly collect to sell since they're relatively light for their value. I keep a handful of elemental scrolls for emergencies against enemies who have strong resistance to my usual lightning spells but I don't think I've ever actually used them beyond a single fight with a storm atronach.

I'm glad i read ur post...

I'm working right now on Mod, new World with Mages etc.

Player can open own Tavern in that World, sell food, drinks and rooms to NPCs to make $$$ in game...

But tbh. Food You have in Skyrim is very Poor... i was thinking to make "Special" menu with food u can buy ( ur visitors in Tavern )

But i think... Yes you right... problem with Food is that its worthless in Skyrim...

So i just need to make it worth to use ^_^

like for example Good Rest bonus after You sleep 8+ hours...

If food gives like "Good Feed" bonus etc. that increase speed UP your level etc.... then Food is worth to eat ? :D

I think i need to think about what bonuses Food can give then :x...

aside from "Good Feed" bonus xD

Scrolls? Toilet paper!

They are an easy to carry form of gold.

Horses? Hypophobia!

For some reason they tend ride my PC and not the other way around.

Mining? Mimic!

Cooking? Yes I do! More than in RL ?‍♂️

I blame sLola and iNeed ?

(okay, that was true before @Corsec patched my innkeepers and taverns became supermarkets ?)

My followers mine, cook and use horses, erm good used by them.

Sometimes I use a horse, because of this SLEN feature.

Scrolls, have always some special one, .....but cannot remember using one.

I am using Magic scrolls, at least i try to. Even got me a mod with which you can write your own scrolls, kinda like desenchanting weapons and use their spell effect on another. Since my character now is a none mage, i wanted to use them as substitute for cases i need some magic.. Well 20 hours into the save and i still haven't used a single one.. mission failed successfully  ?

Cooking and Mining.. I don't do. I absolutely hate the crafting system, got honed metal so i pay for everything i wanna have. My Pc is a Warrior, not a blacksmith, nor a tailor and skyrim has some of the finest craftsmen in Tamriel, so why not use their services?

As for Riding a Horse, i do regularly, but once i got too many companions i tend to walk anyway. Riding system for followers, doesn't matter which Framework you use, is a pain in the ass and the AI is stupid as fuck. Either they don't dismount or they teleport at some point.. Dark Envoy be praised i can just turn into a cloud of bats if i have to make miles on a vampire save, if not i just wolf out.. If my companions teleport anyway, at least i can travel in style

Never saw the point of horses (in any game).

Never eat, drink, sleep, shit, shave, shower or shampoo.

Always mine. It's a popular pass time in Skyrim.

Of course, one needs the right tool for the job.

Don't need miner lights or majer light either.

Also do not use torches or mage light spells. (Not needed).

Only use arvak from dawnguard as i don't like the creepy horse stalker you get for the rest of the game as soon as you ride any of them

I would have to say that my usage of these things are governed by 3 factors. First game lore, second game mechanics and lastly real world knowledge. This means I am often making judgement calls, do I follow the game rules or go with what is really right?

So for SCROLLS it mostly comes down to lore. As a Breton not so much yet as a Nord a bit more so. Also I might keep 1 or 2 very useful scrolls that I don't know the actual spell for, just in case.

As for MINING I feel any exterior vein is fair game as is any in abandoned mines/ruins.

With COOKING I look at both game mechanics and real world experience. Firstly game wise cooked food gives better benefits (heals/buffs) and secondly from the real world while weight savings is negligible or even nonexistent it frees up inventory space. Rather that sorting through a load of apples and cabbages I now have a batch of stew. So while out exploring if I come across an empty campsite I will cook up whatever I may have in my inventory.

HORSES are useful but I rarely use them. While I do have a summonable mount (mod) I only use it when needing to travel vast distances. I mean really 2 hours on horseback or 7 to 8 hours on foot, a no brainer. (real world not necessarily in game)
