To be, or not to be...a guy in Skyrim.

Anything I can think of should affect both male and female actors then, using the vanilla marriage system. I would suggest that the spouse is heading to Whiterun to run a shop/stall in the market, but if the male actors don't do that I don't know why the female ones would.

If owning and moving to other houses doesn't add clarity, (Hearthfire or another city, could you try living in in-town Breezehome a day?)

Sylgia either isn't the wife you were thinking of or the review got something wrong. She's from Shor's Stone north of Riften, in Skyrim, unless you meant she would not leave Skyrim and move into Solsteim.  As for beauty pagents... that depends a lot on which body and hair mods you have and the NPC appearance overhauls you have, of course. I don't think I can call any stock in game character beautiful with the options available via mod.

Then again, beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder and we're dealing with pixelated game characters with two dimensional (if that) personalities.

I just created a new guy to try all these experiments on, I don't want to accidentally screw something up with Alexander. I think I mistook the Bijin chick from Solsteim for the other one that was mentioned. SO MANY LADIES!!!! I'm going to use the statue of Mara and select the option of "Owning property in one of the holds" to get started quick on this. I still don't get why the wives and kids leave Cliffside Cottage when the husbands and kids don't on my female PCs. Still a mystery. I LOVE your "beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder" quote, that made me laugh. I went to the Nexus and just downloaded a "Hot" file of some pretty follower and enabled a male follower as well to see what happens when my guy marries both - not at the same time, of course. I'll keep you guys posted on what happens.

I've only ever actually married three NPCs in Skyrim. The first was way back in the day when I played this on Xbox and it was Ysolda. The other two characters are both custom followers.

Signar for my girls with a few custom edits I made to him, http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/65099/?

The other was Minerva, also for a woman character and customized by myself. http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/74256/?

Minerva isn't truly custom voiced, she's more like how FoxFingers did Amorous Adventures. But she's great, very nice and has a lot of cool lines that you don't see in the normal vanilla game. I would recommend her, if you're at all into elves.

Ysolda was my PC's first wife that I kept having trouble with. Then again, I don't know if it was because I had moved her to a custom home. Again, more experiments!

Where did you get that I said it was wrong or stupid to do anything? That doesn't make any sense seems like your interpretation of something there.

You said, "Once you lose that power play in skyrim you won't have a problem playing as a female character and playing the game just for porn.... I don't project myself onto my character in skyrim anymore either as you are still doing so that helps a lot with playing a dumb blonde bimbo character that seems to fall into every sexy trap and situation she comes across. She starts out fine but as time goes on she ends up being gobbled up by the major porn mods and spends the rest of her game life in slavery and sex scenes then I start her over and try new mods etc."

That came off as very rude and as an assumption that I need to play as a male, destroy all things, then play as a female PC "for porn". I don't want any fights or arguments in this thread. If what you said was not meant to be insulting or offending then there's no need to bring this up again and we'll put this unpleasantness to rest.

I was responding to that other poster not you and assuming that poster was male since they mentioned having problems playing as a female. I think you understood my post out of context. When guys talk about female characters in a porn invaded game like skyrim I'm sure it can make female player upset but this is LL where porn mods have pretty much taken over the game. I have seen that poster in other threads and I think they are looking for answers to stuff that is not lined up with what you are looking for so I was trying to have a convo with that poster and not so much yourself.

Then perhaps you should have quoted him directly so this misunderstanding wouldn't have happened. Are we cool?

I'm completely clueless when it comes to CK so I stay far away from it. I really love the Hearthfire one but, also love that one can assign houses to different followers with Spouses Can Live Anywhere. Do you know if I can use them both at the same time?

Spouses Can Live Anywhere, My Home is Your Home, Hearthfires Multiple Adoptions, and EFF all work fine together, though you don't want to assign someone to a place with MHIYH then tell them a different place with EFF, that'll screw your Follower up. I just use MHIYH for home assigning and leave EFF to tell them what outfits and such to wear and give them commands when they follow me into Tamriel.

Can't say I blame you for being intimidated by the CK. It's a pile of junk but it's the only game in town. If you ever get curious just let me know and I'll try to dig up the old tutorials I used for making followers.

Unfortunately, I got swamped with work this afternoon so I don't really have time to look up some nice Follower suggestions for you. Hopefully I'll be able to give some later on tonight.

If I were you, I'd try playing as a male PC one more time. You never know, with the right mod setup you might actually discover a new fun way of playing the game. Like I always say, it's always good to get creative with your recipe...

Again, without the ability to remove helmets out of combat, I won't go to EFF. I HATE AFT's set up but, it has what I need. In regards to CK.... I won't go near it. I'll just let other people create followers and such for me. And don't worry about finding a good spouse for my new male PC, I've downloaded one. If you can think of a great one later I'll download her for my main guy, Alexander. :)

I am actually going to do that right now. Just have to set up a few MCM menus, I've cut down a lot since this is just experimental, and if all works well I'll activate some mods into my main male PC.

Regarding meth....

MsOtaku, you might try Amazing Follower Tweaks - MCM version - English, it's an add-on for AFT.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/71022/?

or you might try, Immersive Amazing Follower Tweaks

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/71689/?

In regards to wives, are you sure it's them, not you? :)

Meaning, are you  Fred Flintstone. When you get home is it, "WILMA, what's for dinner"? or is it " Wilma, Yabbadabba do me"? :)

I' trying Ysolda for a wife now. Belethor is going to have an accident. Ysolda is going to take over the shop. It's just a cover for her sleeping tree sap business.

that's it

Oo MCM version of AFT looks interesting. Since I don't use followers much but always configure them the same way I'm going to try that.  Too bad Serana is famously incompatible with AI changes since I'm doing a story with her on my blog :(

Thank you so very much suggesting that mod, I'm going to download it ASAP! In regards to the wives... I've played as a male PC before, married the pretty girl from the Riverwood Trader and they moved into that custom home. But her constant comments about bringing back that fucking claw drove me up the wall. They adopted kids, he shagged his followers, hot NPCs, did a lot of raping and pimping and things were fine but, something went wrong - this was a long time ago so I don't remember - and it killed my game. I went back to playing a chick and found it to be a lot more fun. I just wanted to play a bad guy again. It's just for some reason, and I can't think of why, there have been so many problems.

RL has kept me from doing some experimenting with a new guy I created to test things on. When I have the time I'll get right on that and see what works and what doesn't and if my problems persist. I know that I didn't have a lot of the mods installed way back when I was playing with my first male PC so perhaps some mods aren't playing well with others. Though I don't see why it would make a difference if it's a man or a woman PC. *shrugs*

I did not have any issues controlling Serana with AFT even during the Dawnguard quest. There were some times where I couldn't control her but, it was part of the story and events were happening so it was fine.

It has been quite a while, but the problem I had was that I enrolled Serana as an AFT follower shortly after I met her, then when we got to Castle Volikar she would not enter the castle.  I tried releasing her, various console command, reloading from an earlier save (but I didn't have one from before I made her an AFT follower), etc, and could not get that scene to progress.

Since then on every play-through I've waited until her quest is over to take her on as an AFT follower, and never had a problem.

Hmm... odd. I didn't think I would be able to add her as a follower due to her quests but, after talking to her about her family, past, ect. I suddenly had an option that read, "Control with AFT". I have never had that option appear. I saved, then selected it and she did what I mentioned above. When things were happening in her story she suddenly wasn't a follower because when I'd speak to her there was an option at the very bottom of the dialogue selections that read, "Add as follower". I did not select it for fear that it would screw something up. After the event, she was my follower again without me having to do anything.

In the past using AFT to manage Serana broke the quest line at certain points for me, but IIRC I was able to fix it somehow. Usually I just didn't let it manage her until after I completed Dawnguard.

I actually do like playing males in my games (probably about 50:50), but those often end up with something to the effect of having a harem. Like at the moment I've been trying to figure out what to do for a male character who acts as a monster/bandit with a slave harem. I'm trying to figure out what race to play as (I think it would have to either be orc or a heavily modded version of one of the beast races), what mods would be beneficial (Past just a couple obvious ones I mean), and what my goals and setup for a play through would be.

That last one is usually the biggest problem for me, whether I play male of female. If I can setup a character with a goal in mind of which quests I'm going to do and when I'm going to do them the play through usually goes pretty well. If it's not as clear then I just don't get into it as much even if I want to because I can't figure out what I should go and be doing.

Posted

Until we reach the castle I don't bother making her a follower either.

I'd read that there were some AI differences with her, and I've had problems in the past getting her to use weapons I gave her over her piddly spells.

In the interest of science and testing, how about getting a male spouse?

Okay. So I have spent many hours experimenting with marriage and adopting children - here's what happened:

  • Upon talking to Mara's statue I chose "I own property in one of the holds." And I picked Lakeview.
  • I "Bless this house" and married Ysolda but, had adopted some kids first.
  • Ysolda did not leave after the wedding and asked where we could live and mentioned my PC's kids and I picked the vanilla home.
  • His wife and adopted daughters were in Lakeview and all was peachy.
  • I tried to move them into Cliffside Cottage after I blessed it and no one showed up for days. I spawned his family next to him and they walked out the front door after saying wonderful things about the house. They were not in Lakeview or in Whiterun.

Experiment #2:

  • I had my guy marry a male follower for hire. I had both homes active but, chose Lakeview first and he and the kids were there with no problems.
  • I moved them to Cliffside Cottage and they were all there.

Experiment #3:

  • I had my guy marry a female follower for hire and she and the kids moved to Lakeview.
  • When I told the family it was time to move, the wife followed to Cliffside but, the children did not.

Experiment #4:

  • I had my male PC marry a non-follower male and had the exact same results as experiment #2. No issues.

In conclusion, modded Skyrim was NOT meant for Male PCs, wives and kids to live harmoniously and without fucking glitches. It does not matter whom my female PCs marry (men) I NEVER have a problem with where they live and if the adopted children will be there.

This sucks. I will not have fun playing as a guy with all of these problems. Okay, so Lakeview is a great house but, as I've mentioned before, I am obsessed with Cliffside. It has everything I want and room for lots of kids and followers. Plus all containers are labeled which helps with my OCD. I am a huge collector and love organization - these vanilla homes don't offer that. If I download a mod to re-vamp a vanilla home it's like moving my PC's family into a player-made home.

Another thing that really pissed me off - size. As a female PC, the men shrink to the size of the women and I like my girls petite. But as a man, he can be twice as tall as the women and the girls DO NOT adjust to his size. Unfair bullshit.

On an off note Ysolda is a wonderful and sweet wife, I adored her. Marcurio is also a very kind husband. I always hated him as a follower because he was so cocky but, as a spouse he's super kind and loving.

So, I guess if I want to play as a guy I HAVE to live in a vanilla home, can't adopt more than two kids, and not have my collection neatly displayed in there. I'll just leave that for my female PCs.

I'm mentally exhausted. Thanks to everyone that gave me such wonderful suggestions and things to try - now I know what I can and can't do in game regarding the sex of my PC. Please feel free to continue to post your stories, share pictures and all that good stuff.

xoxo

EDIT: I tried the same with downloadable followers both male and female and the males always did way better than the females.

I don't know why, but when I am playing a guy in Skyrim I can't do that without cutting down on all those sexmods... usually ending up with SL-framework and AA as the only mayor sexmods. Beside that my male playthroughs are almost always way more focused than my female ones but for some reason I just can't make my males work as mages, it just doesn't feel right. Which isn't that big of a problem, because they pretty much everytime end up being sneaky killers with bows and one-handed weapons.

More to the point though: my males need structure and some semblance of concience, maybe because I start to identify with them stronger than with my female PCs... which doesn't mean I don't identify with them, but... well... in a very different way.

I think I play them in a way that my males contain more of my everyday mentality while my females contain a lot more of my sexuality.

Anyway, enough rambling.

With my main guy I don't cut down on my staple sex mods - which are plenty - I just change the settings so that my male PC isn't the one getting raped in Defeat, for instance. I still keep Aroused Creatures but, the animals only shag his female followers etc. Yeah, there are a few that I have to leave out because they are meant for female PCs, such a Dangerous Nights and Horrible Harassment but, if one wants their male PC to be assaulted then one leaves said mods installed.

I tried playing a mage-type character but, it's just not for me. I prefer melee weapons or a bow and arrow.

And I think it's a good idea to play your male PCs one way and your females another. We all have our different styles. :)

With all the experimentation I did last night I got some good ideas for play troughs with my guys. The gay couple was really sweet and I liked that one so I'm sure I'll create that story/game soon, I loved having Ysolda as a wife and she doesn't complain about the house and is always saying sweet things about the kids. I still want to try out playing as a bandit but, that I want to do as a female. We'll see what happens.

Smal tip for mages I found to be very usefull: start using bound weapons asap! I prefer dagger (for the occasional sneak-attack untill I get silent casting), sword and bow, just to keep me fighting when my mana is low/out... As soon as you get mystic binding those become very powerfull indeed and they level your respective combat skills in addition to your conjuration skill (just remember that they don't last forever).

Where do you usually get the bound dagger spell? IIRC it is only available usually after a quest on Solsteim though Add Item Menu makes it available in the LAL cell if you want.

Mage wise I usually start with illusion instead of conjuration, as fear, fury and calm spells can really mess up a group of bandits. Spell mods though tend to be required for the lower level spells you can get, like Viperbolt from Lost Grimoire (low level damage over time destruction spell).

For years I roleplayed male characters almost exclusively, especially in MMOs.  I found that it was a good way to get forcibly immersed in a character really quickly, it's also a fun extra layer of complexity - I mean, playing a talking cow is one thing, but a hulking great bull warrior with a nose ring is just cooler. For me, getting lost in a character is the end goal, getting lost in a male character is Apocalypse Now terrritory

But I've always liked dressing up in games, and frankly female characters have always been hugely better catered to obvs. I got in touch with my inner sloot during a brief but torrid affair with Lineage II, and modded Skyrim is me really indulging in it to the fullest extent.

Most guys I met on MMO RP servers said they just couldn't comfortably play as females, but  most of you guys don't bat a virtual eyelash about it. The genuine adult element is a big inducement to be virtually gender fluid it seems...who'd a thunk it?

I had fun with Destruction. FIRE! KABOOM!!! But after a while it didn't feel as satisfying as beheading someone. I'm sure I'll give it another shot. Thanks for the tip! :)

I LOVED my male character when I played my main MMORPG and when you mentioned the "talking cow" were you speaking of WoW? If so I also played a giant, bad-ass looking Tauren named Buttercup. And he was a Shaman Healer. My guildies nicked-named him "The Pelvis Crusher". ;)  Since I was Horde, I played female Blood Elves and their characters, RP-wise, were mean. Well because they really are stuck up assholes but, very pretty.

And yes, my bank, void storage, and bags, were FULL of clothing and I had the best time playing dress up - from slooty armor, don't-fuck-with-me armor, to conservative armor.

Ah, the memories.

Being a female, I generally play as one. However, having not found any FFF animations, I do sometime play as a guy (for the multiple women animations).

Just think about it this way. If you are going to actually go through the questline, it means you will spend many hours looking at the character you made. Be it third person for full body or first person where you can see the hands of and hear that character. So what would you rather look at and listen to for many hours on end while you are questing? For me, when I have to go trekking and exploring skyrim, I put the camera third person, so I would much rather look at a female butt bouncing up and down while I go up the 7000 steps for the 100th time.

That's what made me want to play as a guy in the first place. ;)

I do want to have two main play throughs, one as a guy and I found myself going into first person the majority of the time except when shagging chicks. But um...yeah, I do the same thing when going up the steps as a female PC. *bounce* *bounce* *bounce*
