If it's not meant to be funny, there are many hazards short of "dragons" that might cause a guard to ask "What is it?" Â The vampire line might be meant to be funny as well. But it's hard to give the writers credit for that much subtlety.

legendarytoyou Posted April 21, 2025 Posted April 21, 2025 My car's alternator. Need to get it changed but sadly I'm broke as a joke. On top of that its a Volvo 2001 s60, not exactly an easy fix. I'm sweating bricks on how much not only the part will be but who I can get to install it. Worried its going to cost me an arm, foot, leg, hand and eye.😖ðŸ˜

Remove the 2 nuts and 1 bolt with a 13mm socket and take off the bracket securing the battery.2 Disconnect the battery terminals: Lift off the battery cover and carefully disconnect the battery terminals by starting with the negative terminal first on the right. Place it off to the side then disconnect the positive terminal and place that to the side as well.2 Remove the serpentine belt: Head to the front of the car, raise the engine hood, and start with the serpentine belt. Attach the belt tensioner tool and rotate clockwise to relieve tension and remove the belt from the car.2 Disconnect the harness and move the power steering pump: Detach the harness and move the power steering pump as best you can off to the side to make some room below for the alternator. Disconnect the power terminal and pull off the spade connector from the back of the alternator.2 Remove the alternator: Remove the lower alternator bolts and loosen the lower a/c compressor bolts. Remove the alternator’s upper bolt that’s recessed on the belt side. Carefully route the alternator against the engine side to avoid hitting the radiator and lift out from the driver side.2 Install the new alternator: Compare the old alternator with the new one. There’s a small design difference but the new one fits just fine. After routing in the new alternator into position, start threading in the top bolt so that the bottom bolts thread in easier.2 For additional guidance, you can refer to the video guide available on 1AAuto's website, which shows how to install an alternator on a 2001-2007 Volvo V70.3 Premier Gear PG-13801 Alternator: This alternator is a replacement for Volvo V70 L5 (99-04), S70 L5 (99-00), S60 L5 (01-01), S60 L5 (01-04), C70 L5 (00-04).  1

If it were me I would try Pep Boys, Auto Zone, O'Reilly's, parts retailers as online parts are not a quick turn around if defective, or just plain old junk in a new box, I would take the old part in and compare it with the new part to assure it was the same thing. It has been known to happen that the wrong part is put in the right box, I also read the two bolts on the bottom of the alternator sometimes seize and need to be sprayed with penetrating oil, the top of the engine is just a cover that needs removed to access the alternator. I would buy some of your favorite beverages, hit up your friend, have a good time fixing this issue yourself, "with a little help from your friends! Get the one with the best Warranty & Service that is affordable, from a local vendor. porkybork Posted April 21, 2025 Posted April 21, 2025 Based on the recent exchange and my own personal experiences, I have come to the following conclusions that I promise are entirely scientific. Guys aged 65+: Can disassemble a car and then put it back together like it’s a Lego set. Guys aged 40-64: Can perform most standard car repairs as long as it doesn’t involve messing with the actual engine. Guys aged 26-39: Can change their car’s oil, change their tires, replace their battery, and replace their spark plugs, but have to google how to do anything more complicated than that. Guys aged 25 and younger: Can’t afford to buy and maintain a car.

To reply seriously to what is intended to be a joking post, pretty sure some of those things are difficult if not impossible to do on modern cars.

Hmm, well there isn't a Pep Boys but there is O'Reilly's and Auto Zone so I'll look into that. You might have a point, sometimes getting something from Amazon tends to be a coin flip. Sometimes you get a good part and others you end up with a paper weight. A warranty might be the right idea. Also got some friends that are willing to help. Just not sure what brew I should get. Hope they like Four Locos or Guinness.😋 Thank you for the advice.🥰 1

I had to have one so my only choice was Ebay, Chinese seller, 300 dollars. Installation was another 750 dollars. Turned out the crappy sending unit that came with the assembly was defective, costing me 75 dollars for the part, and another 400 dollars to have it installed. Keep in mind these parts are centrally located within the engine itself, so tear apart half the engine to R&R these parts, and the seller claimed no responsibility for the defective part. A 1050.00 job cost me 1525.oo when it was all done. The parts assembly now cost 97.13 so they were really reaming those of us who had to have that part at that time when everything was just not available. Even in the 80's when I worked at Auto Zone parts would be wrong in the box, we would always open the box and show the customer, after working there a while one knows what these things are supposed to look like and we found our share of mis labeled, wrongly boxed parts. I wish you well in your endeavors! 1

As far as amps, do you run extra fog lamps, extra devices that need more power, if not I would spec it to what is recommended. Dual batteries, winch, off road lights, rally lights, amplifiers with sub woofers, Service vehicle with jump cables & powered welder, camping set up for power to camp site, would be the only reasons I could think of for needing the extra amps. 140 seems a happy medium. Or Uganda. Or the UAE.
