For instance, I have several  "natural" fears (of spiders, snakes, being handicapped or raped and so on and so on), but my greatest (yet groundless) fear is that my luvs will stop loving me and will leave me some day. This fear is pretty silly too, but it is after me every while.

Although more or less each of us have some common fears, there is something that surely scares us most and that most probably doesn't scare other people . What is it? Tell us.

Topics like this remind how difficult picking an absolute is for me. My absolute favorite? My absolute worst? My mind locks up in a sea of infinite considerations.

If I were to pick a list of things it would be rather unremarkable. The usual high-level fears and insecurities most humans hold.

You kind of raised the bar too high for me, and me being a nobody here anyway.

"handicapped, raped and so on" isn't good enough for you.

Accidents? Been there, done that.

Dead people? I don't think it qualifies.
Fucket, I await the cadre of really hot people expounding upon politically correct fears.

To be honest, I really don't know what I'm afraid of. Once I accepted the fact that there are things in life that can't be controlled and that I'm going to die one day regardless of what I do, I haven't really found myself being afraid. I still have moments where I get scared, like when I almost get hit by some dumbass in their car not paying attention, but that's more like basic human instinct and not fear.

The thing i fear most is dementia.

I have 3 autistic sons, I care for them, do most things for them. I am 56 years old, my sons are 16, 20 and 24 years old. I fear what the future holds for them, and us. My wife of 30 years got colon cancer last year, and while we caught it early and she currently has a stoma (with associated colostomy bags) we hope her reversal surgery will be done in May. Cancer has the habit of coming back though, so I am afraid of that too.

The only thing I truly fear, is that which I, nor anyone else, can truly control:

Other people's poor decisions.

I can make my choices, and they can effect myself, or others, which I try to avoid. But when others make choices, that may effect me in a negative manner, all I have out of that, is the mess left to deal with. And depending on how large the 'mess' is, and what the repercussions are, that, is what I truly fear.

One wrong word, from someone who's having a bad day, and I'm left homeless.

One wrong choice from some random idiot, and the last person I have left to talk to in this world could be gone.

Stuff like that.

Very scary, and very dangerous, is the presence of others.

read my stories and you will learn a lot about my fears but also my hopes...

..because they help me to come to terms with my life experiences

Fear itself. Fear is the mind-killer. The people that usually survive catastrophes don't let panic overwhelm them. I cannot overstate the importance of keeping a cool head in dangerous situations.

My greatest fear is dying without doing the most important things I want to do in my life.  Slowly, that seems to be becoming a reality.

Pretty sure most ppl die thinking "If only I'd had more time...". That to-do list was a lease agreement after all.  ;)

Yes - one can avoid panicking in the face of danger...

...had this myself when I found my girlfriend pumped full of sleeping pills in her apartment. Yup - attempted suicide by her...reacted like a "robot" - saw me acting as if from a 3rd person point of view.
That's how she survived - but for me the "big end" came after a few hours when this "medic mode" switched itself off and my brain came back to "reality".

That's when my fear kicked in and I had what is called "naked panic".
Well - even then it wasn't completely unknown to me ... and I knew that this would pass again - at least one day ... at night it's something different - but that's another story.

"Go to a psychologist with that" ... hahaha - find one in the health desert called Germany - who, according to health insurance regulations, MAY listen to you and not only prescribe "drugs".
(on January 1st, 2023, these regulations were massively tightened again - more than 1 million people are desperately looking for a psycho here to be able to just chat - to "let their hearts breathe")

Personally think most psyche docs are Skooma dealers anyway, lol. I confide in the one person that understands me and maybe a few others that have earned a measure of trust. And I figure out what drugs I like on my own.

Besides, only crazy can really understand crazy. My gf told me that she learned more about herself talking about things with me than she ever did talking to a psyche professional.

Isn't drugs more psychiatrist territory? At least in the U.S. it is.

Although I think both should be considered. And I'm not saying that because I'm having a hard time finding a psychologist that accepts my insurance:classic_rolleyes:. Meanwhile my psychiatrist has full reign on my very depressed brain.

I told her: "I don't know if the drugs are helping doc. Maybe we should deal with the root problem first.  Like what about my anxiety about society. It is broken past the point of repair. Should I get a flamethrower or something?"

And she's like: "That is beyond my expertise. I deal in medicine."

Then I say: "Then what good are you?"

and she says: "Shut up and take the happy pills!"

I say: Yes doc

Speaking of which U.S. healthcare. Now that is something to be afraid of... not the care part. The insurance part.

Reminds me of my favorite general line of quotes regarding a "democracy".

"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."

And (paraphrase)

"Democracy?  I want nothing to do with a system of government in which someone else gets to decide that their rights are more important than mine, simply because there are more of them."

I have seen my own "rights" curtailed time and time again by people who believe that since they have no perceived need for X, Y, or Z right, nobody else does, or should, either (except the government, of course, because the government will protect us!).  And let's not go into people in political power just arbitrarily deciding that "Oh, THIS particular thing is now no longer allowed!  Buh bye!!!  Oh, but only YOU, the people, can't have it.  WE, the government, are still allowed it!"

It scares me because I see it constantly.  Rights, and privileges, whittled away at.  Bit by piece, slowly and surely.  So slowly that your average idiot will give and give and give, and then their children will read about how things used to be, and their grandchildren will wonder where all the rights they talk about in certain documents went.

One could say death, but fearing death is a non-issue, because it'll happen regardless. What I fear most is others dictating to me how I WILL live my life - because THEY said so.  I can (and have, to an extent) fuck up my life perfectly fine on my own, thank you.  But to be TOLD what to do / how to live my life?  No.  Not unless it's in exchange for an equal measure of what I want from someone else, and it's a "meet in the middle" sort of thing.  Straight dictation?  No chance.

my greatest fear would be to be in the forced position again to decide who's to live and who not.
i've seen some really f'ed up stuff. and lets put it plain and simple: that stuff can and will break you when its too much.

therapy, some happy pills, and a lot of help from my family is all that saved me from going on further upon that dark path.

Exactly. People are so shortsighted, that very few can really see the long term effects, and/or damage, that giving up all the little things can add up to.

For example; I remember a time when a carton of smokes only cost $20. Now they are over $100 a pop all because all the taxes that have been added on them, year, after year, after year.

I've said it time and time again, and I'll say it here and now:

Everything in existence enters this plane of reality with a 'terminal illness'. And that illness is called 'mortality'. Nothing lives forever. Everything, everywhere, will eventually expire. Trying to fight it is nothing more than a test in futility.

I thought of this post when I read this article, among other things, like the drops I got for an eye test, and the drops in facilities causing this, so not just nasty-ass dirty slobs like me.

This forum-thread and this quote made it topical but seriously, nevermind, just thinking out loud.

Bugs, specifically roaches.

When I was pretty young I woke up one night to something in my ear, only to find out that it was a roach. Ever since that night I'll poison myself with bug spray if I see roaches in my home. It didn't help much that my mother moved me and my brother into some of the shittiest holes possible and she was a cat hoarder to boot so filth and bugs.

I've worked as professional bodyguard in my younger days, I developed a reputation for being fearless, even today now that I'm significantly older my absolute lack of fucks given has skewed my fear response,,, BUT I STILL FUCKING HATE BUGS!

My old employer has some custom made cockroach plushies made and she sends me one occasionally. I fucking hate roaches, just thinking about them is making me squirm in my seat.

In the physical sense, dangerous bugs like giant spiders and centipedes and all that.

Aside from that accidents and bad luck, specifically fear of losing a loved one or my company. Life's really great and getting better everyday but in the back of my mind i'm scared that something catastrophic might happen.

Also big LOL at some of these people who think they know politics.
