sila Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 A remake that makes sense for once... I look forward to it despite CDPR's recent troubles. I remember the story of Witcher 1 very fondly but the gameplay was so god awful that I just can't play it anymore. What do you folks think?

I understand not liking the direction CDPR has taken, as I don't like it all that much either. I do however still believe they have it in them to create good games given enough time.
steelpanther24 Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 I don't see it as bad as some other super favorites from years ago. Fallout 1 comes to mind, a buggy control nightmare game but with an awesome story. I tried playing that again and just couldn't. However, W1 still has a great (imo) story, decent enough quest lines, decision making that seemed that you were taking the good road, putting you against the Witcher code (I think I let the werewolf go, as well as the vampires, earning me a rebuke from the lost witcher). I have thought about loading it up and playing it again, especially since I won't play a game in a series unless I play the first one all the way through. Mass Effect being the one exception. Bottom line: I think Witcher 1 stands up better than other great franchise games. While this may b e better in another topic (if it hasn't been asked before), what first game of a series has "stood up " to the test of time? Note: Flight simulators and simulators in general can't be judged because faster computers means more realism can be injected into the simulation, so it is unfair to compare Chuck Yeager's Flight simulator to Falcon 4.0 for example.
sila Posted October 26, 2022 Author Posted October 26, 2022 (edited) The thing I hated about Witcher 1's combat was that if you did the right combo for the target you were practically invulnerable. To balance that a lot of enemies had obnoxious stun effects. I hated that more than anything else in the game. That hell hound boss is a golden example of what I hated about Witcher 1's combat. As for your question, IMO Disgaea easily stands the test of time. If we only consider the first game in the franchise that's the one that really comes to mind. I still enjoy Legend of Dragoon as well, though I think that would be a big ask for folks that don't enjoy older games. I think a lot of ps2 era games hold up surprisingly well compared to newer titles, some are even favorable to newer ones particularly when it comes to monetization and unlockables. A lot of the fun stuff you could unlock back in the day are now locked behind micro transactions for example. Cosmetic outfits, funny modes like Big Head, even cheat codes are paywalled in some games... It's sad. Edit: actually on a whim I checked the steam page, Disgaea and all the other NIS games are on discount now. For 3.99 it's a steal for anyone that enjoys tactical rpgs and never played it. Pamatronic Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 Sounds pretty interesting actually. When I look for a new RPG to play, I soo often stumble upon something interesting looking and then notice that its over 10 years old, so I tend to not play It because the gameplay tends to be, well, dated... Especially with titles like witcher or mass effect, I find it very difficult to adjust to the previous versions gameplay mechanics when you are already used to the more modern systems. Played the mass effect titles in the order 2, 3, 1. The first entry in particular wasn't something I could develop a real fondness towards. Changed difficulty to lowest so I could just blaze through the action parts and enjoy the story. So yeah, looking to play through the entire story once they´ve anounced the remake for part 2. 1

The ending to the Witcher 1 is still one of my favorite endings for a video game of all time. I'd be more specific on why I like it but that would lead to spoilers.

What do you folks think? > My Prince played all three parts of Witcher and he liked the stories in all of them, but the fighting was done pretty lame in first game. I watched some in-game trailers so I can understand what he was talking about and I could agree with him. So if the remake would be done, they should certainly fix the fighting.

Decèdere Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 Guess I'll finally have an excuse to play the first game then. I could never get into it or the second game, though I absolutely loved the third game.

Guest Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 I played second and third and modded the third. Never played the first one. I will be happy to play it with a newer engine (it should be Unreal 5 if I am not mistaken.)
BananaSplitHmm Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 (edited) Might be a good idea for drawing new people to the franchise. Witcher 1 is pretty tedious and hasn't aged well, at all, yet its world building and character introductions are key to enjoy 3's story imo (and 2 obviously, and probably 4) Won't play it though, found the story pretty cheesy, with its two cartoonish villains, and the last one arrives* like a hair on the soup. Sidestories weren't great either Edited October 28, 2022 by Ceerylla
