Switching mod managers (to anything different) is not going to help. Your plaintive cry that the new tech is so much more frustrating than the old tech is the same thing our great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents said about the first "horseless carriages" in the late 19th Century- horses and buggies were so much less frustrating. I was an NMM fangirl for years, then early this year when I started a new playthrough I saw that the Bug Reports on Vortex had diminished to the point that they were actually User Fail Reports, easily solved by RTFM. So I watched 3 of Gopher's videos on Vortex before I installed it, and felt right at home with it from Day One. It's stable, works perfectly, has not effed up any installation at all (I'm up to 225+ mods now) and does considerably more for me than NMM did. Here's some early-adopter advice for ya: ?
Shep67 Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 1 hour ago, Vyxenne said: Nope. Problem NOT solved for you- it has been reported that Bethesda modified (an unspecified number of) shaders (breaking current ENB binaries), and in addition added some Necromancy quest(s) and/or items (sorry, I wasn't paying attention when the prof went over that part because I'm blocking updates so I don't effing care about updates ). If items (weapons, effects, apparel, etc.) were added, Skyrim.esm and at least two of the BSAs will have been updated (Meshes and one or more of the Texture BSAs.) So the game executable is not necessarily the only file being modified by SSE (and presumably FO4) updates. You must have a backup of at least your Skyrim Special Edition folder and the Data folder under that before your backup will be of sufficient depth to justify saying "problem solved for me." Just so much easier to simply block updates. I truly don't understand why everybody doesn't block them, and I especially don't understand why, after reading all the buzz about blocking updates for the past year or more, and yet steadfastly refusing to do so, people jump on all the forums and whine that they can't play when they, through their own inaction, are the only ones responsible for their inability to play ... and many of the entitled brats even resort to shaming mod authors ("Endorsement and patronage withdrawn until you update this" was one of the more egregious examples I saw this week.) It's just mind-boggling. O do not use ENB for Special edition yet. It is true more stuff is changing. But at least the mods are operational.

You have to run it every time you do a full upgrade.

If you want the bug fixes, you'll need to update to the latest version whenever it's released. It's not like it's actively maintained though, really. I dont know if ya noticed, but we have 139 pages of stuff in this topic. Im just saying using what steam gives, all I knew about is turning off auto updates but the only other option is setting it to only updating when launching the game and limiting auto updates to certain hours. I can't set steam to offline mode since I play other games in addition to skyrim which require it to be online, like MHW and GTA5. And I can't just make a backup of my entire skyrim folder since I dont really have the room, because I play other games than just Skyrim. If you know some other trick or have some information I can read then Id appreciate it, but it comes off very rude when you say "You should try reading the thread." like saying Im too dumb to read whats in front of my face. If someone posted something a few pages back I admit I havent read it, since I normally read the first page and the last page and then ask for something more specific. Expecting someone to read over 100 pages in hopes of maybe finding an answer is a bit unrealistic. It's not so much a factor that I can't read, more than you didn't seem to care enough to write anything helpful. Not that my post you quoted was actually me asking anyone for help, so I'm unsure why you reply like that to me about it. I was just complaining about steam removing options they had before, and Bethesda uncaringly making updates where they fuck up mods and peoples games and not bothering to make their updates in a way that doesn't cause these problem for everyone. Its very anti consumer, especially considering their games only do so well because of the modding community. While Im on the subject tho, I was told in another topic to try running skse from Vortex. I didn't know it could do that however, so I'm still trying to figure out how and Im not 100% on if it will actually do anything. Tho I did ask about it before, and I was told to do what I already did... turn off auto updates via steam. I even went a step beyond that and limited times steam could download to a time Im normally not up at. But I was sick and woke up earlier than normal, and in my sleepy stupidity I forgot about it, turned on my computer, and used the restroom. Regardless, I feel from what I've read about it I might already be fucked since the update maybe changed more than just the exe or something, so I can only go on from this point with better information for the future. Maybe I should disable steam's ability to start up with windows as well. Just so far its a huge inconvenience that we cant just disable updates via steam like we used to. Update: Was following some instructions here and found this. But when I looked into my folder, I saw did have the foresight to make a copy of my SSE.exe so there's that at least. Just not sure if that will be enough~ guess I have to fiddle with things.

That is ALL you have to do, it's not hard. Set steam to only update the game when you launch it (via Steam or the default game shortcut), if you never use the default game launcher, it will never update. It's not rocket science, desktop shortcuts are the most basic of PC basics.

If it is not running then Steam will launch and try to update. If you don't remember to check or start it then consider having Steam run on boot so it's always up. 5

As a mod author, I'm not going to comment on your first sentence. I will say that it's possible that copying the scripts "might" do what you're asking, but it depends on what all Ashal changed. I'd back everything up, but there's a good chance you're just going to have to update. Even if you don't, don't expect much help because Ashal only supports the latest version.

I dont know really, maybe I set it up not to auto update too late or something, maybe it was already set to update before I changed it (I just started playing on SE actually~) so it could only update during specific times which prevented it for a time. I did notice it was in the que of my steam games for an update and I didn't know anyway how to remove it without uninstalling the game, all I could really do was limit updating to specific times when I wasnt normally up. And like I said before, I woke up early feeling sick one day, turned on the computer so I didnt have to wait for it to load up and then used the restroom. It was the last thing on my mind at the time. I dont remember precisely what might have otherwise happened a week ago to trigger an update, maybe was a slip or something I didnt notice. But I definitely meet all 3 requirements. Maybe at least it will prevent any future updates.
Vyxenne Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 "Blocking Updates for your Mental Health" - a Boilerplate by Vyxenne ************************************************************* How to block SSE updates from the Steam Library: {Right-click on TESV: Skyrim Special Edition} >> Properties >> Updates >> "Only update this game when I launch it" then never again use the Bethesda vanilla SSE launcher Steam >> Settings >> Downloads >> Only update games between {set a one-hour period when your computer is NEVER turned on} I set 6:00-7:00 AM Steam >> Go Offline ("Restart Steam in Offline Mode?") >> {"Yes, dumbass, or I wouldn't have told you to do it"} and never put Steam back online until you absolutely have to, e.g. you are ready to update the game Any one of the three methods above will prevent SSE from updating- the other two are for when I screw up and launch the game at 6:15 AM or whatever. After you have set the above 3 blocking parameters, make sure Steam is already running before you launch the game, then launch your game via skse64_loader.exe. DO NOT rely on the skse loader to launch Steam for you because doing so causes the game to be launched via the vanilla launcher, triggering the game launch event that overrides the first step above. The easiest strategy is to set Steam to launch when you log on to Windows (at boot). 4
