I've often thought the constant online patching of old(er) games is unnecessary for the player and should be used when a player requests it. With modern hardware and software constantly being introduced I understand 'why' some patching may be needed by some but never 'all'.

 

I hadn't booted up Steam in several days and when I did, looking at the list of game slated for patching I saw 3 of the UBIsoft games I hadn't played in months waiting to be patched.

 

All 3 have the exact same patch file size: 174.4

 

Just another day on the internet farm.

Don't know why I thought of this, but in second grade everyone in my class had to learn the Macarena dance and perform it in front of our parents for some reason. It wasn't until way into my adulthood (as in a few minutes ago) that I learned that this song is about some woman cheating on her boyfriend with the guy's two friends after he joins the army. Perhaps the greatest benefits of Good Old Games.com is DRM free copies of games which can be burned to physical media if one so chooses. The second may be the ability to play completely offline at all times. The third greatest one is the ability to control versions of the game that one plays. 

 

Of course, the worst thing about it is that AAA developers tend not to publish their games on that platform precisely because of the level of control afforded to the customer. 

Those three Ubisoft games can never be updated on GOG if they were never on GOG.
