What is your pet peeve about Fallout 4?

No worse than the BethBasher cult, most who don't even play the game or boast they only have 100hrs of game time but seen it all and know it all. They are bitter twisted arrogant anti-social trolls, they spend more time bashing Beth games in Beth game areas of forums than actually playing other games. They just can't leave people alone to enjoy a game because they don't like it, they want to ruin it for people who play it and ruin it for people who haven't played it (We've all seen it).

It's not like Fallout fans are hanging out in the Skyrim, GTA, WoW and Counterstrike forums bashing them.

This is a Fallout section of a forum, its a peeves thread not yet another Bethbashing thread, if you hate Fallout so much and don't even play it, just fuck off elsewhere and play something else instead of hanging around like a mouldy turd waiting for Fallout 5, 6, 7 and 8 to bash next........

Uuuuuh. I think your comment is directed at the wrong place and thread. Lol.

I think the two main things Bes did that drive me nuts are.

A: They made Boston look like a wasteland yet after 210 years the vegetation in the area would have recovered to the point where grass would be growing and trees wouldn't be leafless.

B: The Fact that it's the year 2077 when the world "ended" but despite it being 2077 and they have things like power Armor, miniature fusion fuel cells, fusion based cars etc. etc. they still hadn't managed to invent a metal that doesn't rust and/or corrode after 210 years.

Point A. Assuming best case scenario of a nuclear exchange between the nuclear powers a nuclear winter would last roughly 50-100 years.

Then there would be a major global wide drought.

This is what a major drought looks like in Australia's most productive agricultural region.

And this is an Australian forest 2 years after a bushfire. No drought, no radiation ect.

So the visual styling of the Fallout world is actually not that far from the truth. Also remember in Fo4 it's freaking Autumn. So everything is orange anyway. :D

Point B.

Aluminium and Stainless steel didn't really become widespread in our timeline until post divergence and even in our universe there is actually very little use for alloys other then in specialist applications and most things are either cast iron or mild steel. Something may look shiny but it's still plain mild steel and without what we know from the Fallout universe it's highly doubtful that their material science is any good. If the Pipboy is the most advanced computer they have. A device that has less power then an old Nokia flip phone from 15 years ago............

I am not a fan of the designs Bethesda used for the weapons and firearms in the fallout universe.  I dont know if it has been mentioned before in this post but things like the left handed, bolt action rifle makes me cringe and look to mods to replace it.  The in game assault rifle did not impress me either I felt that my character had somehow found a special unique World War I weapon when I first saw one but, I then realized this is what Bethesda decided would be a good replacement for the AR-15 style rifle in the previous FONV game.  I did not mind the style of the pipe weapons in the game as I felt the design for those was intended to be a weapon that looks like it would have been made using various parts from a junkyard or a wasteland.

Ultimately I feel like the water cooled machine gun needs to be thrown out, the sniper rifle should be set up for a right handed shooter, unless it was a unique drop, even then it still would not make much sense for a right handed shooter to use a left handed firearm.  Popular rounds like 9x19mm, 5.56x45mm, or the .45 ammo for handguns like a very popular 1911 should have been included in the game (I know their is .45 ammo in the game currently but it seems to be only for the SMG and pipe weapons.)

It's been like that since FO3.  It's obvious the devs have never shot a real firearm (or even held one) and they don't know anything about ammunition.  For an open world shooter that's centered on guns FO4 is an epic fail in that aspect.

Before I start, I actually like FO4.

But things I don't like include:

  • - The main story making you wipe out almost everyone else in the game. Why? My character managed to get in good standing with -each- of the factions, and yet the story made her wipe at least two of them out? Be friends one minute, massacre them the next? Gah!
  • - The setting making only limited sense. Yes, there was a nuclear war. Yes, not a lot of people are actually left. Yes, there is a lot of rubble. And criminals. And mutated monsters. I get that. But it's has been TWO HUNDRED YEARS and the remaining decent people still live in wooden shacks? When a lot of houses are still there for them to repair with the abundance of building material laying around everywhere? Really? One should think civilization would have formed some pockets of rebuilding and a fresh start, after 200 years. In short - this wasteland is a little too wasted. Also, I would think after 200 years, these cookies would taste a little stale....
  • - The stupid console UI. I hate them in general, and this one is no exception. I know that mods can and will fix it, but I find it disrespectful from a company to hand us over a dumb console UI on a system designed to be used with keyboard and mouse. If you release on console, make a separate UI for them, not give everyone the least common denominator. And we all know how much consoles suck for RPGs - or really any game that's not an arcade game.
  • - Not something that really pisses me off, but the honorable mention for a thing that made me giggle was my character's backstory. So, I am a housewife and new mother. I have a degree in law and I am probably good at cooking and changing diapers. So, shit happens and I am suddenly alone in a big bad world. And all out of a sudden, I am a complete badass, shooting moving targets in the head and mowing down heavily armed gangsters with machine guns and grenades, as if never did anything else in my life. Not sure if THAT was in my law school's curriculum, but ok!

In Autumn there would be no leaves or the leaves would be orange, red, or dying...

Basically due to the time of the year the Trees are actually correct.

One of the biggest overlooked things when people make the argument that the world should be green.

The next followup is that well the weather or the atmosphere has changed its supposed to be desert BUT green Dammit!

Cept deserts in the US don't have a lot of greenery ><

In any case it would be giving Bethsada too much credit to say that they actually thought that the tree's should look dead.  In fact I think its more likely that those are dormant Fall weather tree's.

The game is in fact in October, maybe in other parts of the world its green in October but in Northern America....No no its not that green and in fact a whole lot of the tree's shed their leaves and enter a dormant state...Another complaint is about the amount of dead leaves on the ground....Uh ya!  There would be a whole lot of leaves on the ground since no one is sweeping those up...haha

The tree's are just dormant during that season and that's likely what was going through the designers head, I really don't think they were thinking dead tree's.

Sometimes when you switch to 3rd person while moving your character suddenly stops moving.

That and your weapons don't appear on your when you holster them in 3rd person. So you need a mod for that lol

Josh Sawyer was pretty much the only gun-nut ever involved in any Fallout-game which is why only New Vegas made an effort to have some gunporn (as limited as it was).

My biggest pet peeve??? My boobs in the game. not NPC boobs. My boobs..... for some reason at times the just.....disappear when I change armor. Well, disappear isn't exactly correct....they just shpla and mush into ultra flatness and I have to quit to the main menu and reload to fix them. I know, probably my fault but still, it's kinda annoying...

Build your body and gear without Physics. Most armor doesn't support it yet.

The Institute as a playable faction.

They are setup to be a truly messed up, and evil group just like the Enclave in Fallout 3. But it feels like the decided to tone it down after doing all the world building in order to make them a playable faction. I mean, their endgame as a faction is to turn on a reactor. That's it. This is a group that's been creating Super Mutants for 108 years, is replacing random people in the region with replicants, and has plans along the lines of "replace father of family on farm, experiment on crops, have synth eliminate evidence by destroying crops and killing family". And their grand plan is to start up a power plant???

I think they made the decision halfway through developing the game, and had the artists, writers and coders who were supposed to finish fleshing out the Minutemen quest-line switch over to making the Institute a playable faction.

Even with the drought theory, that gives 100 years for plants to go crazy again. There's no excuse for any part of the USA to be a wasteland after 20 years. except for areas dependent on man to keep them green. Phoenix AZ for example would go back to nature hard.

But, as has been mentioned here, the game taking place in October is the best excuse for the dead and dying plants. It's one of many things that sold me on Fallout 4. It looks like...well, nature.

I'd more complain about buildings, cars, roads and similar staying whole and structurally sound after 200 years of weathering. Someone said it best though. They really want a game that takes place roughly 20-40 years after the war, but there's no way to shoehorn in Super Mutants or the Brotherhood of Steel if the game takes place that early. Though I'd have preferred it if most of the skeleton's you find had raider or survivor clothes on instead of pre-war rags. It's been 200 years. I'm willing to accept that many of the corpses I come across might only be a few years old and not victims of the war.

You people seem to forget that Fallout is neither meant to be realistic nor that real life science applies to anything that happens in Fallout. Radiation and things like the FEV are essentially magic with the added convenience that you don't need to actually call it magic.

Personally I liked it that way. "Good" and "Evil" has always been a matter of perspective, and the way they pictured the Institute did a good job of conveying that the world is usually grey, not black and white. My character actually went with the Institute. It felt the most natural choice for her. The -intent- of the Institute is noble - make the world a better place, rebuild civilization. They value science and progress, while all other larger factions (the Minutemen aren't one) act like a band of Afghan warlords. My character has pre-war education and a university degree, she's probably better educated than anyone outside of the Institute. A bunch of scientists and a clean bed must make her feel home, right there. Oh, and her son actually built the place. Would any parent in the same situation refuse to side with their kids, if they can somehow preserve what they worked (and died) for?

Now, the Institute's -methods- are questionable at best, but, you know, my character is the boss girl now. She can change that. That's how I envisioned her story to continue after the game's end, at least. *shrug*

This has probably been said, but the exploration in fallout 4 was really boring. I remember in fallout 3 and new vegas I could just skip the main plot for awhile and explore different areas. Each place was unique and usually had something going on. Sometimes I would run into some unique awsome quests. Fallout 4 did have a little of that but only a little. 95% of the time, exploring in fallout 4 was boring and everything seemed the same.

It infuriates me that you have to follow linear quest paths (They try to make you feel like it matters, but it doesn't) and don't have a choice of how you play the game.

For example, I've finished the game twice. ONLY TWICE. I had finished new vegas like 14 times...

I hate the fact, that while playing BoS, I MUST destroy the institute, I can't take it over, I can't let them live, I just MUST destroy them. WHY!? It's such an invaluable asset to the brotherhood, why destroy it??

OR, when I'm playing institute I must destroy the brotherhood. Why not keep the airship, the power armor and liberty prime?? Having air superiority is better than no air superiority, right? Even after an apocalypse...

But...NOPE, bethesda said fuck it and said "Oh our fans are close minded anyway, they will enjoy these linear quest lines..

I have never finished the game not once. I plan on destroying the institute but not before pulling some alarm required to evacuate people at some point. Gen1 and Gen2 synths roaming around shooting people really sucks so they have to go and their people snatchers have to die already. They took a baby and turned it into a monster they have to answer for that.

I hate the entire plot of this game and the writing it is so obviously politically biased. Lets see the BoS are the allegory republicans as described by liberal nut jobs, the minutemen are how liberals see themselves in society... the synths are the allegory gays and other taboos of society. I guess I shouldn't expect anything less during an election year.

>fuck it, why not

The fact that the guys at Bethesda looked at the game and thought 'Yeah that's okay'

As a shooter it's actually a pretty big improvement from its previous iterations, having implemented basically every core gameplay and control improvement from Project Nevada and just overall making gunplay feel better.

I mean, it's still not a great shooter, but in this one area it's an objective improvement, something I can certainly believe is worth a "Yeah that's okay".

Everything else, on the other hand...
