I tried my hand again, this time I activated DOF. And I experimented with the FOV, I took the same shot three times with different values.

First: FOV 45, for me it makes the character the main focus, but I am not happy with the composition, the tower behind her head is kind of distracting, right?

Fov45.jpg

FOV 70: The character is still the main focus, but with more surroundings to me it looks more natural. I think it is due to the different FOV that the wall in the back starts to blur with the DOF effect, it makes the tower behind her less of a distraction. Well, at least for me.

Fov70.jpg

FOV 90: The character seems to get lost in this one. For me there is just too much scenery in this shot, pulling the attention away from the intended target of the picture. But that might just be me as well, I am easily distr...ooooh shiny!

Fov90.jpg

All in all, I guess I still have to try learn about the correct composition of a screenshot.

My favourite of the three is the one with FOV 70, btw.

FOV 40 seems to work best for close ups with the sole purpose of focusing on the character.

Thank you, Jexsam, for your post. I found it very informative and helpful. I will try to fiddle around more with different settings and different places with your tips in mind.

One thing that is blaring out to me, is her ears. Cute face, cute expression, but what is she? Elf or some kind of Fox/Wolf? It's creating a conflict of interest, taking away from other details while wondering if the ears are part of her or some accessory.

The wolf ears are just supposed to be an accessory...

You do have a good eye for symmetry and proportion Jex, I've commented as much in the past. But this:

"cartoon-style proportions do not mix with super-realistic body textures and normals.Simplest fix would just be to find a flatter, more plastic texture with a normal map that doesn't, or at least minimally, show pores and veins"

is another of those infamous 'Law According to Jexsam' moments and why you should probably post more screenshots and offer less advice.

Some folks will inevitably have a strong dislike of Shermie's obviously rather non-conformist approach. But If you're going to go critiquing one of the very major features of what she clearly sets out to do, at least have the decency to acknowledge that you probably aren't her target audience. That will at least clue folks into whether your advice is actually worth heeding rather than you just airing your rather conservative views on what should and should not be.

edit: I do like that stair shot. She's a rather fine example of a proud and haughty race.

I think Taskmaster's post is applicable:

Critiques and advice, aren't, and shouldn't, always be about suggesting or telling someone of things they could do(in their opinion) better. It's also about sharing feedback on things they would've done, would do differently, and even alternatives for people to consider.

I stated an opinion, offered feedback, and offered an alternative way to try to make it work better. Even if you disagree with my exact phrasing, nothing I've said has been outside the bounds of this thread's intent.

I pretty explicitly stated in that post that I was stating opinion, not fact, so I'm not sure why I'm having to explain this.

My main character is actually a male, shock I know. Here are a few pictures of him...

attachicon.gif Screenshot57976.jpg attachicon.gif Screenshot60713.jpg Here he is punishing Anise for dressing like a slut at her age (and for being a witch, I guess confused.gif )attachicon.gif ScreenShot7.jpg

Just a question, is there a way to change a characters combat expression so that he doesn't look like he's taking a shit every time a bandit shows up?

MFG console, you can change the expression of your character through console. An alternative is using Racemenu to do it(which I recommend more, if you're willing to take the time, as you can combine some expression together, like Fear + Disgust). I don't think you can default it that way, but you can at least change it for a screenshot.

It's noble that you came to Shermie's aid upon criticism that's negative... however showing up that way sets a precedent I personally feel is not good for the thread's health(opinion). It kind of comes off like, if someone has something to say about what Shermie shares, that isn't positive or neutral, they might have to deal with someone other than Shermie, appearing out of the blue defending her against someone else's opinion. It could risk watering down what others may want to express due to social reprisal or even hivemind.

The stuff you said before "@Shermie" was way out of bounds, and set the tone for the rest of your post. Where you negatively critiqued(not that negative critiques in a vacuum are bad) someone else who hasn't actively participated

Don't do that shit.

That's not fair to you, them, or anyone else.

You: because people may end up responding to you in certain ways just out of spite.

Them: they aren't in the damn thread, and them coming to defend themselves would cause drama.

Everyone else: planting a horrible seed in the thread.

Again, there's negative, positive, and neutral criticism - all on subjective matter. Everyone should be taking more caution with possible backhanded remarks, and bringing others who haven't participated into a critique, even if it's positive press.

Personally, I feel you should delete the earlier part of that post before "@Shermie".

Literally every single bit of advice, feedback and suggestions is 90% of the time subjective to opinion. The only things really is pointing out blocky faces, different textures, scenery, pose, facial expression and armor. Those are the only outlets with the least amount of individual personal preference. Can we at least offer what we can with "imo" when recommending different style?

Too bad, this thread was a nice idea, it felt nice to post some screenshots without having them drowned in the mutual ego-stroking in the other screenshot threads.

Getting some feedback on what could be improved was a nice change.

Now it turned into a who said what and why to whom.

Well, I guess it was fun while it lasted :-/

I am posting my characters for feedback.

So I am only posting my female characters and I want to know what's good, what needs improvement, and any other thoughts any of you may have on my characters.

There are face shots, body shots, and lastly a random shot.

The faces have all been sculpted as best as I can make them with a vanilla head, the bodies are all UUNP and all except the Breton and Orc bodies were customized by me (I used bodyslide to generate various forms of bodies to fit each character).

The only thing I can say is that you have a very popular disease called "sameface syndrome".

I have it too but I kept that only to my 2 characters , even though they have a different textures and many custom assets you can still see a similarity between them.

Even when I have changed facial shapes and left only lips *untouched*, its the main thing that makes them look like a clones.

Fixed that for you ;)

My impression was, that people post in this thread to get feedback, so nobody posting here should feel angry in any way if the feedback isn't just positive. :)

I know I do it for the feedback and when it comes to my previous shots, I liked every feedback, since it helps me improve my screenshots.

The only stuff not helpful would be: "Your screenshots are shite, her boobz are too small and shite."

I personally liked this face the best. Well, not in "the best", but in "she really looks stunning." :)

We all have our personal preferences and tend to put them in each character, but it stuck out to me that the eyes could use a little more variety in shape and angles. They mostly appeared to be the same style. I am not that big a fan of the elvish eyes, so my own prefernce might well play into it

Maybe that is why I liked the imperial face best, her eyes varied from most of the others.

And I like freckles. And the pout ^^ And the cute little nose. She just "speaks" to me the most.

A few have already chimed in with some suggestions I was going to make myself, namely the eyes.

For the breton, see how she looks with her eyes spaced a little further apart and raise them just a tad.

Dark elves, the first one from looking at her profile, I think some features could be brought forward to balance the rest out, such as the chin.

The high elf, well it's really just personal taste here, but the vanilla elf eye shape always bothered me; too much slant.

Imperial, I see nothing glaring at me here, she looks good.

Nords, it's the eyes again. First one could have her's spread out some and the angle adjusted to look less elvish.

Now the orc, she's my personal favorite, and that amount of muscle isn't even my thing. She's got very strong vibes, but the tip of her nose could come out a little while bringing in the bridge. You can compensate by making the brows more prominent to retain her brutish (but sexy) look.

Redguard, great balance of features here.

Woodelf, maybe her lips or nose could be moved, because right now they look like they're touching.

Anyway, that's my feedback.

Not to revive this whole thing, but I'd say that negative criticism - which essentially boils down to 'this shouldn't exist' to my understanding, someone correct me if I'm wrong - is kinda pointless. Unless you are completely unsure what you like, you should have at least a distant goal you want to achieve with something you create, be it screenshots, characters or everything else. Means if you want your character to look like a battle-hardened shieldmaiden, criticism that's focused on that particular goal of yours won't help you in any way, because you do want that shieldmaiden and criticism should reflect if you achieved your goal or not.

An example to clarify what I mean:

kc4dv8ck.jpg

This is a cutesy animu human with pointy ears, not an elf in the traditional TES meaning. It's obvious that I intended that look, so unless you're at least a cloest weeaboo, you're unlikely to offer me any advice on how I could improve her look. You could, however, say what I could do better as a whole, regarding lighting, composition, colors or whatevs, even if you don't like the character itself.

Also we should refrain from focusing the thread on a few select persons because that will cause drama. You can of course just say that you really like this or that user's screenshots, characters or something along those lines, but lifting someone above all others by implying they're objectively better than everyone else is something that breeds negative emotions.

Thank you all for the feedback.

I made some changes to my characters and in most cases it helped make them look better.

Hopefully the changes will be more evident when I post more shots of them at a later date.

When I created my characters, I tend to use real-life celebrity photos for reference.  Here's a nord I posted here before who's basically a Emma Watson clone.  Just wanted to get feedback on the character for kicks.

Had to pull up a recent photo of her, but I think you did pretty well. It would help though, if you use a lower FOV for a closeup so she can be compared to her real life counterpart. About the only thing I could suggest, is lowering her outer eyebrow arch a bit.
