Because when you're imitating someone's voice it's still clear who that voice actually belongs to, you're imitating someone else's likeness. AI removes that and clones from the source which is eligible for copyright infringement. Same with how tracing someone's art and drawing very similar to someone's art are handled differently. Stable diffusion is imitating someone's work instead of making a 1:1 copy which keeps it from being a clone unlike an AI that clones some VA's voice directly.

If someone uses someone's direct likeness and don't credit the owner of said likeness then yes that is absolutely eligible for copyright infringement as it should, doubly so if they use that likeness for their own commercial use because that's making money off of someone else's intellectual property which doesn't cover hairstyle, obviously lmao. The reason 11labs needs so few sample dialogue is because it has a giant database of neutral dialogue in the background that was recorded by 11labs using consenting VAs. That's why for Serana and female even toned the 11labs output is much better than for voices like female orc, because the sample database is pretty even toned itself and therefore greatly compatible with Serana and female even toned, but not so much with other voice types. And you can hear that if you listen to the generated dialogue. Edited August 1, 2023 by VersuchDrei 1

It wouldn't matter how Elevnlabs does what it does because the end result and usage makes all the difference, in this case legality-wise there should be no threat to the original VA since the mods that use their replicated voices aren't being used commercially but if Bethesda all of a sudden started using Laura Bailey's voice cloned with AI they'll rightfully be in trouble. That was my original point.
Guest Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 (edited) The problem with these AI tools is that their parent companies utilize the art and assets of others without giving them proper compensation. Thus, I am on the side of the VAs and artists in this situation because they never gave permission for their works or voices to be included in the AI´s asset database, and by extension, never recieved compensation for the use of their art or voices used in these AI-generated projects. Guest Posted August 7, 2023 Posted August 7, 2023 AI replacing VAs is not enough. You barely will need voiced quests. Back in the old days characters would not even move their mouths, so asking voice from quest mods is a overstretch. The entire polemic is just cheap entertainment (as is most of parlor dramas). I think AI would be much more useful if it could replace 3D artists. This way, I could ask a AI to reproduce gothic and baroque buildings (both exteriors and interiors) for the nif format, and then deploy them in the CK. I would even pay for such tool.

zaira Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 The genie is out of the bottle and the voice actors objections may seem understandable, but this is an absolute sideshow, and the actors are wrong - resampling has been standard in the music scene since the beginning. I have the strong suspicion that the argumentation of the speakers is only pretended and that the real motivations are rather greed for money and outdated prudish moral concepts. The much bigger problem is that neither voice recordings nor video recordings will have any relevance as evidence in court proceedings in the future. We are stumbling into an age of fakes, where there will be no more certainties. 4

Best way to get textures is through procedural rendering, which is tedious. Now AI takes that hard work away from you. But again, if you're in the industry, stuff like this happens what seems like on a daily basis. Adapting and learning the tools is how one survives. The one's who really will be hurt are the writers, but good, they were trash to begin with. A good writer can outperform GPT any day of the week, even on a writer's block, but the shitty hollywood writers who have no grasp of realistic world experiences... yeah, their fucked, and good riddance. It'll be a long time before AI can be creative. At best it somewhat mimics human work, and with some human intervention, you can make it seem good. Same with VA's. A trained VA can outperform AI anytime of day. They don't have to worry. I think you misunderstood my post. I was talking about a AI that access Blender by itself, and do whatever I ask in the prompt, without me touching Blender. Sort like Stable Diffusion, but for entire 3D spaces in nif format. The textures I can assign later, using nifskope. Do you think AI development can reach this stage in the next 4 years?

The issue here is that the back of the image was not photographed, so you will only have half of the model (for interiors, I mean). So a AI would be useful if it could complete the back side (that is not in the picture) and export it to a useable format. For this, it would need to predict the "movement" of architecture details in the image, in order to draw a 3D space. In this way you would not even need a prompt, only use the photography as a base for the AI to work. Personally I think AI is not really that advanced as people say. Voice acting is not enough, and is barely used anyway. At most I will only use it for guards. I will only take AI seriously when (and if) it have this kind of complexity. Until there it is just noise. Edited August 23, 2023 by Wolfstorm321

Obsidian only uses AI for filler dialogue in side content so the pros already know that the tech is not there yet for full script readings so saving it for inconsequential NPCs is the right decision for any indie developer or mod maker looking to fill out the sound scape.
SmedleyDButler Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Yes, the follower mods which try to externally hook into ChatGPT for dialogue are, uh, interesting, but a long way off being useful for prime time. There's the uncanny valley factor, but another layer to that is also never being quite sure whether the dialogue spoken is specific to the NPC in some way (i.e. background or personality input into the model), or just drawing on the generic response set these models have been trained on. It's all very Alien-in-a-human-suit.
DamienVryce Posted August 23, 2023 Posted August 23, 2023 Actors have historically had similar social standing as prostitutes. The advent of recorded media and the moneyed interests who monopolized parts of it changed this for a while, with concurrent attempts to flex their perceived influence, but this is temporary. They'll struggle and squirm at the return to the norm, and no doubt insist upon contractual protections in future gigs which will enable them to attempt legal defense against some dude generating the lines "oh! oh! just like that! oh!" for their porn mod. The end result will be some vaguely similar AI voice synthesizing the lines "oh! oh! just like that! oh!" and no one will care. Not even the actors, because they will be too busy prostituting themselves after they lose their jobs to AIs that cost less and show up on time. 2
xXDeliteXx Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 One red flag is they're saying this is "abuse" This isn't physical abuse, this isn't even mental abuse. What people do in their own games is their business.

Darkening Demise Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 So.... did someone make porn mods with the AI skyrim voices then? Like..... what's going on?
Wandering_Mania Posted September 2, 2023 Posted September 2, 2023 Personally I think that if the VA's are offended, then that's a 'them problem'. It's a risk that comes with the job, and they should be aware of it. But they also have no right to stifle creativity simply because advanced technology has been able to replicate what they sound like. It's not like they are personally, physically, emotionally, or monetarily, damaged because of fan created mods. If they don't know of something, it can't hurt them. If they know about it, and it does hurt them, it's because they allow it to do so. And there's no shortage of future work for them. Or in short; It's just more famous people further alienating themselves from reality. "You hurt me because I can't buy another $4,000,000 house!" It's real difficult to feel any pity for them.
