old cat Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 This is a take off on a couple other blogs and forums I read on occasion. There have been some interesting responses in one of them, which I will not identify. Some agreement across the board on all of them. ... BUT ... I have found LL to be one of the more open-minded and somewhat pragmatic communities. Interested in the response and discussions that might ensue from this. So starting it off: 1) Money (top of my list) - Why do I find it overrated? It's hard to get by without it and personally have done ok, sometimes had enough for me and mine, sometimes just getting by. But invariably it comes and goes and as long as I maintain a sense of self I have found that I do just fine with or without. A little extra doesn't hurt, but life has taught me (albeit forcefully at times) that IT does NOT buy everything. 2) Monogamy / Long term single lover - Wweelllll. ... How the explain this one. hmmm Let's see 3 marriages and couple other long term associations. And realized in the last 10 or 15 years that I am an asocial sort. I enjoy friends and lovers (and for the record hetero only, not even curious of others options) but I get along fine without some one person there all the time. I have also grown into the belief that humans never evolved out of polyamory. Maybe an excuse for why marriage doesn't seem to work for me LOL. and yeah it's more complicated than that! 3) Big house / multiple houses - Had both situations, I find the big house is no good without the right people there which also applies to having multiple places. 4) College degrees - Done undergrad and grad school. Multiple universities. Taught undergrad courses. Continually amazes me that so many are getting degrees and then can't find a job or they get one and are unhappy, struggling, etc. And yet I know plumbers and electricians and machinists that are making just as much money as the degree soul with 10 years experience ... and they are happy with their life. 5) Success - I have been successful ... multiple times ROFL. Real question is how you define success!! mmmmm See first and third for insight why overrated. 6) Celebrity or Successful people - I have lived and worked in Washington DC and New York City as well as other places large and small. Traveled the US and from London and Dublin to Tokyo and Seoul to Melbourne and Singapore. Astounds me how no matter where I went people talked about Madonna or Trump or ... or .... or whomever going back to the 50s and the big thing in Camp Chaffee in Arkansas was going to the base and watching Elvis Presley (if any of you remember him) reporting for training ... and the days following to see which kid / wife / enlisted / officer could brag most about talking to him or just seeing him. Granted today it seems to be more which celeb exposed themselves to who but the same things were always talked about. K, I've done my normal wall of text so I'm going to shut up, crawl back in my hole. And see if there are any posts expanding on this. OH, and the interesting response on the one blog ... SEX overrated pleasure of life. Well maybe. I don't see how but maybe life just hasn't dealt me those cards as yet. If it does then I think it's time I go walk-about and find a game trail to sit on.
endgameaddiction Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 False rape allegations. Because it's more of a reason to not take real victims serious. So I hope those that falsely accuse someone of sexual assault/rape get hung by the neck, dick and tits.
shencereys Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Happiness and pleasure. Namely the pursuit of them in the form of the disgustingly shortsighted advice I was given growing up : "just do whatever makes you happy". This terrible, idiotic advice makes indolent paupers with no job skills and no future out of innocent young people who's only mistake was to listen to some bloody fool who thinks happiness just like, appears for people who don't work to achieve it. The very act of experiencing pain and toil and work makes each of life's pleasures that much sweeter. Don't seek happiness and pleasure - seek work, responsibility, and the opportunity to grow your skills. The happiness will arrive on its own, unbidden, and you'll have your dignity and finances fully intact when it finds you.
DoctaSax Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 The Beatles. They were a'ight, just not all that. Smartphones. Don't use 'em. Dumbphones. Don't use those either. Cigarettes that aren't my brand. None of them taste right. Rants about SJW: more SJW, innit. Booze. I kinda miss the Scotch, not the hangovers and puking. Weed. Very, very enjoyable but that doesn't mean it needs to become your religion or something. Hallucinogens. It's all fun & games until "kewl, the walls are melting" becomes "shit, my face is melting". Tea. It's just thinly flavored water. Should be in the dictionary as an example phrase for the word 'meh'. Lots of friends. Then you have to go places. Kids. A nice place to live. Takes upkeep work that involves loud machinery. (About that: we can put a wonderful little probe on Mars that sings to itself every so often but we can't make quiet lawnmowers and power tools. Explain that.)
worik Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 The idea that the human being is supposed to be the most intelligent species on earth. 24h a day it's only purpose appears to be to prove that theory utterly wrong.

Hell yeah! It really doesn't sound too bright when guys from the United States call their beloved country 'America'. I'm almost waiting for guys from the European Union calling that economical construct to mirror NATO 'Europe'... Reminds me of Dad who still understands himself as 'Afrikaner' from... what? Ah, South Africa. But then again, why should the former Transvaal in South Africa be understood as 'Afrika' and not perhaps 'Oost-Afrika' in South Africa which sounds more realistic from the geographical point of view, eh? These Afrikaners are crazy! And they are not the only ones in South Africa and beyond... far from it. The root cause is always the same - foolish exceptionalism.
winny257 Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Bethesda Games, especially Elder Scroll Series! only for a few mods, especially sex mods, to do everything possible to experience a virtual orgasm. I just think it's funny when people even pay for mods.
joemonco Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 What is overrated in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women. DAMMIT, that is best in life...
SirDuke Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 Career, work, job, money, all that shit that seperates me from my free time... And man, how I HATE that question: "...and what are you doing?" And I know what people are curious about, but I often answer "...picking my nose, when nobody´s watching" "... no, I mean, what is your job?" "some dumb, lame fucking stupid, boring shit, just to be paid enough to pay my few bills and to be god damn left alone! Now fuck off!"

Finances play a single card in the hand we call life. Some get dealt better hands than others. I just feel I was given a single pair. :S

spoonsinger Posted September 25, 2018 Posted September 25, 2018 WW2 Italian tanks. People never stop talking about them.

Back in my World of Tanks days a running joke was this: Why do french tanks have rear view mirrors? So they can get a good look at the battlefield.

Darkpig Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 Pets (Yeah I said that) I mean why do people keep around furry critters that you have to feed and clean after and don't even pay the rent?

For our well-being, we as humans need the social bond that comes with just two conditions - mutual respect and trust, the give and take, the win-win that is sometimes called love. Next to that there's just the temporary partnership of purpose, the give or take of a win-lose. For little children at the crawling stage this social bond with 'others' is much, much easier to learn than at a later stage or as juveniles, let alone as adults cos you can't teach an old dog new tricks. That problem we share with all mammals in animal kingdom, as it seems. However, this is just my humble impression after raising a child to school age with the help of a now 14 year old she-dog. The day the dog dies will grieve the little boy much and for long. We humans simply don't want to let a beloved one go... forever.
Tyrant99 Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 Celebrities - Hey, I pretended to be someone else in a movie, now people should worship me. The fuck is this all about? Religion - It's pretty overrated for this day and age, isn't it? Binary Thinking - Shitty, over-simplified, black-and-white thinking / beliefs / opinions don't do any justice to the actual complexity of most issues. Human Nature - It will be the death of us all.

If people want love they should get off their smartphones and interact with someone. Also don't give me that old dog new tricks crap, that is just an excuse for old people to be lazy. There could be an argument made for love vs need but whatever your stance on the subject remember that Cats still have the better deal. But you do you. Heavens forbid I convince you to do anything else.

EgoBallistic Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 Empathy. I think I'd be a lot happier if I was an asshole. I mean, there are so many of them, and they sure don't seem to be bothered by it. Like politicians or corporate bigwigs or petty bureaucrats, who screw people over all the time and just go on about their day. People who cut you off in traffic, and then flip you off afterward just to drive the point home. People who throw trash out the window of their cars. People who burn their yard refuse on the first cool day of fall, so that everyone who opens their windows to enjoy the crisp day has to smell smoke. I figure it must be nice not to ever worry about what people think, just doing whatever is most convenient or profitable or entertaining for yourself with no thought to how it affects others.
Halstrom Posted October 4, 2018 Posted October 4, 2018 Shaving, everyone in school is in a rush to grow hair so they need it. After 35 years its a vastly overrated experience
