Skyrim Modding Diary - 27 February 2022
Hi folks, hope you all had a good weekend. Today is going to be a bit of a cleanup session as we get ready to launch our next case study tomorrow. We'll be addressing a couple of small issues I ran across yesterday, revisiting a change I made during a previous session, and doing our usual daily scrape of the Nexus.
We're starting the day with 1,412 mods installed, 1,459 plugins active, and a final load order index of E8.
Incidentally, the "next adventure" poll closed today, with four votes for Solstheim, three votes for Skyrim, and one vote for Skyrim but including the mod Toys Workshop. As I read it, that's a tie between Solstheim and Skyrim, and so I'll be restructuring my plan to visit both locales.
Today on the Nexus
There were a number of good uploads to the Nexus today, though I'll be skipping many of them because their scope just isn't right for where I'm at currently. I particularly liked Jelidity's two new mods and I'll definitely be adding their Darkwater Crossing mod to my mod plan. Today, however, we'll just be installing low-impact stuff, specifically:
The author of the Dwarven Spiders mod also did one previously for the moon dials and I'll be grabbing that as well.
No surprises with these mods - the only work that I had to do was to put them in proper asset load order. Sleeping Tree contained a small patch, but it was clean and already ESL flagged. The only conflicting record was related to the sleeping tree location, where Death Consumes All added a persistent flag; I merged those records to preserve both mods' changes.
No Blackface Allowed
While I was getting screenshots for last night's entry, I discovered that one of the actors had the dark face bug. I captured her form ID and as you can see below it's pretty clear what's happened - two different mods are fighting over her facegen data.
Normally I'd have to delve into this further, but Big Beautiful Women of Skyrim is a "must win" file because its custom bodies aren't compatible with normal facegen. So we're just going to head over to Courageous Women and hide the relevant files. Fortunately, the data in the plugin is correct so we don't need to mess around at all. Or so I thought!!
Review of the actual BBWS file reveals that Voada's facegen is missing, which means for whatever reason I decided to not use her. This means that I need to unhide the Courageous Women file and copy the CW face data to my override. So let's reverse the polarity and do this right. How does this look in the end? Let's see:
Much better!
Fixing a Broken Tavern
I have JK's Winking Skeever. I forgot to install its Lux patch. Consequently, the poor tavern is now a headache inducing maze of exposed occlusion planes. We're going to update JKWS to its latest version and then apply the Lux patch.
As you can imagine, this patch introduced a lot of conflicts, but most of them were clear cut and easy to process. There were a few odd ones, like some cases where I had to merge baseforms from Namira's Decorations with locational changes from JK's. On a similar note, a watchlist item for the future is going to be Prison Overhaul, since it appears it has a cage scene in here, and many of the associated statics have positional changes. That's pretty low priority for the moment, since in the future I'll be giving XPO a thorough review and cleanup anyway.
Much better! We'll probably be back in the future for more Lux patches, as there was such a huge volume of them I'm sure I've missed others.
Hair Transplant
You might recall that earlier this month we moved some pubic hair parts from slot 49 to slot 57. This worked, but after consultation with some fellow modders it became clear that Slot 57 was going to cause problems with Devious Devices and (for futanari characters) with Toys. We're going to reassign these parts to Slot 54, which is very rarely used. For now we'll only do this for males and futanari, but we may also go back and do this for female pubic hair with an eye for better appearance on low-riding pants. However, we need to closely watch during the next adventure to see if using slot 54 creates unwanted amounts of mesh intrusion.
Why Slot 54, by the way? Because this slot was reserved during the development of Devious Devices. Toys uses the same schema, and along with TAWOBA those two are the most pervasive users of alternate slots. Since TAWOBAE moves the slot schema to mirror DD, using the open Slot 54 makes a lot of sense. If I ever use Remodeled Armors (or other mods for that matter), I'll just have to keep an eye out for any competing usage there.
That's it for today - just a quick one. See you tomorrow for the start of the Groot's Solitude case study!
We ended the day with 1,416 mods installed, 1,461 plugins active, and a final load order index of E8.
