Things we like to see in games

Either I'm bored, or doing my favorite sport: Procrastinating

Meanwhile, I propose this: we say things we like in games and things we'd like to see in future releases.

For example:

Combat/Kills

  • Gore. I like it when you can chop off someone's head or cut their arms off, but keep the blood splash and maiming realistic. I hate when you swing your blade once and suddendly its a blood bath, but I also hate when you bust your arse off trying to hit your enemy and in the end all they do is fall down with a few bruisers. It's so cathartic when game devs get the gore right. example (Old and dark game incoming) Severance Blade of Darkness.
  • Smart combat. I'm SO SICK of that turn crap. Make it intelligent. Blocking, dodging, counter attacking, timing and smart striking should be the rule. Some kind of hybrid between Assassins Creed 2, Prince of Persia II and Skyrim maybe...
  • Intelligent stealth. I love a good stealth system, when you can sneak up everyone's back, kill them silently and they'll never know you were there, but mess it up and it can get annoying as fucking hell. That's why I almost never take my chances on stealth chars.
  • Headshots. I just love them. dont you? Examples: Resident Evil and Tomb Raider
  • Fireballs. Because muh fireballs. I just cant feel right playing a mage who's not shooting fireballs.
  • Telekinesis. Because it's the most awesome power a mage can possibly have and we have it narrowed down to to moving dishes, lettuces and stealing crap. Embarrasing. Done right: PsyOps - The Mindgate Conspiracy

Character Development:

  • I always love a good RPG where you can create your own char and make them as awesome or pretty as you want.. so dont ever dump that.
  • Unlock weapon specialties. Why the hell are you always confined to use one type of weapon depending on your class? What happens if let's say, like me, you wanna try something new. My favorite combination is a dual sword wielding combat mage. AKA Spellsword/Bladedancer. Somehow a lot of games force you to choose "If you wanna mage, you can't sword or heavy armor, you have to staff" Fuck that shit. I wanna choose my own destiny, not let the class choose it by me.
  • Spells and Skills. Now this is more of a personal one, but I like it better when you don't have to pick you skills or spells from a long display list. It's better when you have to use a certain ability in a smart way. For example lets say you want magic, you developed pyromancer skills. Same ability which could be "flames" could be thrown far a way as a fireball. maybe the longer you cast the button the more destructive it gets, but fast shooting has it's perks too. Cast on yourself and you burst a ring of fire knocking your surrounding foes, cast on you weapon and now it's a flaming sword, or even create a weapon with the same skill, like a whiplash or something. But not those long everlasting lists...

Equipment:

  • A game where you could have all types of modern and ancient weapons would be perhaps too much but being able to choose between a magic bow and a silented machinegun with a lasersight would be awesome. Specially in a retro-futuristic setting
  • Armor: Every straight male loves a slutty armor, but why deprive the world of covered armor too? Why do games today are always black or white, covered, or completely slutty? Why can't we have both? Regardless of quality, you should be able to choose a heavy armor that covers everything or a heavy armor which is only heavy because magic (duh) and covers nothing. Just like in real life people choose whether to dress up covered or in slutty fashion. Slutty armor could have a bonus to... persuation checks or something...
  • Alternative combat styles. Most styles are: sword and shield, bow, dagger, staff and that's about it. What if I want to combine things and look awesome... lets say dual blades or a blade and a handgun, or a magic book that enhances your spells. A whiplash to create mayhem all around you or the mentioned book and a sword
  • Quick weapon switch system. Keep it simple. Ranged/Melee. I love it when a game has that.

Story/Gameplay

  • Forget that MMO crap companies are evolving towards these days. I don't want a large online world where nothing happens except lots of useless lore reading and community events. I want an amazing story. That's the only reason why I keep playing those Assassin's Creeds. If it weren't for the story I'd have dumped the franchise long ago... yes its an entertaing gameplay, but in the end it's more of the same gameplay on a different setting. Also same happens for Starcraft. Couldn't care less about online play. Online play is nice, but it should be a complement. Done right: Assassins Creed, Starcraft and Warcraft (at least the first parts of it) Done wrong: Aliens Colonial marines - Pure online play, crappy story. Crappy enough to make the whole game suck.
  • Stealth. AGAIN. If you wanna stealth play, make a smart stealth play. The most satisfactory stealth play I ever get is when you infiltrate a certain place, and you're a complete ghost. You go there, you infiltrate, you reach your target, do your thing, and nobody ever knew you were there. Killing is easy in games. Not doing so, that's the real challenge. And dont forget alternative ways to complete missions when playing non-stealth characters... gosh that really pisses me off.

Fantasy Worlds

Depending on the setting, there could be combinations of these or only a few to keep it reasonable.

  • Dragons. Yeap. I'm a nerd. I like dragons in fantasy worlds. Just leave me be. Only dont forget to make more of those who are also friendly. I totally hate killing all of them.
  • Giant Trees. Because we have not enough games with giant trees. Why not when they're so fucking pretty? Example: Kashyyk fictional world (Star Wars homeworld of them Wookies)
  • Steampunk. Yeap I like retro-futurisic victorian age steam machines and gears too. They look awesome.
  • Cyberpunk. If you want a futuristic setting, this is the rule. Go watch Blade Runner or something before attempting a futuristic game
  • Dwarven cities. In most lore types these are awesome underground mazes, so, make more of those. Kudos for Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins.
  • Floating cities, islands and things. Because we definitely don't have enough of those.
  • Lots or art styles. A game is more visually aesthetic when it has more than one artistic style in their content. Lets say for example, elven, dwarven, human, oriental and arabic. But why stop there? there are plenty of other art styles to dig in depending on the setting. Take demonic or alien like H.R.Giger's artworks. maybe robotic or enochian. Even lovecraftian... pick your poison.

Romance

  • This area is very underdeveloped lately. Take Skyrim and it's marriage system: "Oh look and amulet of Mara. Wanna marry?. Sure, why not. Now go make me a sammich" No sir. Romance is comlpicated. It doesnt have to be like that in games, but al teast save some difficulty to keep the thrill. Characters some times meet each other. Some times they start as sworn enemies or dont get along too well. Then they start meeting each other. Some times, its the fact that there's this great obstacle bewteen them. Some times, it's the experiences they share, the counting on the other to have you back while you have theirs which sets the romance mood. That feeling when you wanna be there, and protect another, when you know you can count on them and that they can count on you. The sense of plenitude when you finally got to kiss the one you love for the first time. That's romantic. Not that sammich crap
  • Leave room for choices. Because romancing only one character gets boring in games.
  • Sex is not the ultimate goal
  • But it helps. So if it's meant to happen, let it happen.

And that's it... another bored thread. Hope I'm not the only one who likes these things and hope to see what other people may like too,

At least I'm not bored anymore...

I do hope a game dev one day sees this and remembers these suggestions...

I would like to see a few things

Combat/Skills/Equipment

Bows and crossbows in a modern or FO type setting.  Just becasue there are guns, it doesn't mean people have forgotten about crossbows (Daryl in Walking Dead).

Thrown weapons; daggers, knives, hatchets, shuriken, etc. and NOT how they did them in New Vegas.

Flexible Weapons; chains, flails, nunchuks, etc.  How awesome would Skyrim be with Cat Woman's whip from Arkham Knight?

Hand to Hand Combat with different styles and moves.

Realistic Stealth

In Skyrim, you shoot an arrow from stealth at a target far away.  If you miss they run to where the arrow hit and they stand there and look at it.  "Oh look, an arrow.  Where did that come from?"  My common Skyrim tactic is to shoot an arrow and every enemy NPC in a two mile radius runs to go look at it.  Then it becomes a turkey shoot.  Instead, how about making it like what would happen in real life?  You shoot an arrow from stealth at a target far away.  If you miss they run FOR COVER yelling to alert their allies.  "Holy shit!  Someone just shot at me!"

Also, if you sneak into a bandit lair and you kill one of them and another bandit sees it, the whole place goes on high alert and they start looking for the guy who just killed one of them.  They DO NOT go back to what they were doing until they secure the lair again.

That's about it for me.

You know what feature I like in games? It not being broken. XD

To be serious though the biggest thing for me is games with new games + that have up gradable equipment. I got hooked on RE4 and I played that game non stop for over a year.

Complexity, more complex - better, and hybrids genres/themes.

Examples:

Gangsters organized crime, fallout, battlezone, master of orion.

Zombie survival with minimal story and maximal survival. FNV style food/water/sleep requirements, no ammo in every second drawer, huge hordes that 80% of time require either stealth or running, slow time(no stupid 10 minutes between day and night), scarce but destructible vehicles that need constant fixing...also it would be awesome if there was a Nemesis type of unkillable boss always on the hunt for you.

Basically something like State of Decay which is for now the best zombie survival game on the market, only refined to diamond quality with a million new features.

No DRM. No Paid mods. PC exclusive games. Let console games only support console and pc only support pc so we don't get dicked over with ongoing shit and they can revamp MMOs when graphics are out dated.

Console and pc platform do not mix and never should.

Way better A.I and more realistic routine for NPC's and real dynamic world that is diverse not like skyrim with copy past rinse and repeat everywhere same looking npc's and armor they wear or the text they speak its fucking boring. Every god damn dungeon with same mobs same A.I same same and same.

Way more realistic world with real time deformations and distruction or the world.

Realistic weather that have actual impact on what you do in the game and it also change world constantly.

Sounds in game and right music when something happen or in some area should be and could be improved a lot.

Instead of every game try improve on graphics they forget the rest bah:(

And what the above poster say about PC vs Console(fuck console)and DRM FREE games like on GOG.COM we need more The Witcher 3 big games go DRM free but less fucking console ports.

Boobies!!! and Asses!!! - well, someone had to say it.

What I like to see are well written player dialog choices, so I can actually

get involved with my character. I also like the worldspace to look as realistic

as possible. I'm not into weapons all that much, really. They're just tools.

Dynamic weather with seasons throughout the entire map.  Snow and blizzards in winter, rain and thunder storms in spring, etc.  No more weather zones; always autumn in Riften, always winter in Winterhold and Dawnstar.  It sucks as a game world concept.  Instead of mimi-games within the game, stop with the gimmicks and do something creative.

Yes. I like those as well. Well written player dialog that has multilple options that can be explored through several play thorughs.

Yea.. It would be nice if it didn't rain magically indoors as well or under overhangs.. Mini games are gimmicks unless they are part of the game like the card games in FNV or gambling. It is roll playing afterall but it is a cheap trick and not to be implemented unless the rest of the game has been fully implemented and very creative. Then add the added "fluff".

Character creation with lots of options and playable races. If there is a race other than human that appears often in the main storyline and isn't straight out hostile then it should be playable. I hate when games force me to play as a bald dude.

Highly interactive NPCs that will react properly to changes around them and will change their disposition towards players depending on their actions. Like NOT completely ignoring that their family member got killed and player turned him into his undead slave aka dead thrall.

Non-limiting player motion, if I want to charge a spell with my left hand, jump, and swing an axe with my right hand on the way down while firing a fireball off into that group of archers because it does a tremendous amount of damage on my opening volley to even a playing field, the game engine shouldn't limit me.

Individualized characters with backstories no player is intended to actually discover (the same can be said about the world, Fallout 3 was really good at that part), this whole any gender can romance any gender, while nice from a clinical point of trying to be balanced is highly flawed. Yes, bisexual people exist and should be represented in more than a trivial means, but so do mono-sexual (I swear I didn't just make that up) people and they should be as well. While I don't believe Mass Effect did a perfect job at it, they at least attempted to make sexuality matter among their characters. These people are purely heterosexual, these are homosexual, this one is bisexual, that sort of thing. One thing Mass Effect definitely got wrong was taking the characters character into account.

I would love a game that highers a team of people to write the main story and a series of tangentially related side stories, but then have a bunch of individual authors who are given the world at large and are in charge of writing any story they want as long as it fits and slip it in wherever they think it fits best. In my opinion this highly encourages players to get up and have an adventure, sure you beat t he game 20 times, but there is entirely plausible an entire story out there you have yet to even uncover. Adds LOTS of replay value to a game, especially if you play as a character rather than a gamer who wants to see everything with a single play through.

My 2 cents.

I get the entire character creation bin people want, and to an extent I even agree with it. It's certainly better for a game to alow the player massive character options, from everything between a hideous troll to a neigh on eternal elf. That being said, I could quit happily play Dragon Age 2 as either a male or female Hawke multiple times without feeling that it limited me. DA2 certainly had it's problems, and while I agree that the lack of character unique-ness options was one of them, for me personally, it was rather low on my list of problems with that particular game.

This is my opinion, it in no way invalidates or belittles your own, nor should it be viewed in any way as superior or as an attempt to attack you and yours.

More action games need to have multiplayer coop, and don't limit it, don't create a game mode for it, just make whatever single player portion it has available for coop.

Saints Row does it the most straightforward way despite never addressing why is there a second player, but it works amazingly.

If a game wants to go down the story path invest in the narrative, the characters, the pacing, and the world even.

In terms of stealth in game...well I often wonder if it is a whole we dug ourselves. Stealth games are all about AI routine, rules, and treating it like a puzzle. Eventually the player will see through the seams. Randomness is a dangerous element that could easily cause frustration. Options and reactions to situations walk a fine line between "realistic" and purely a game mechanic. Limitations has to be carefully adjust. Finally there's the weird meta game of having to cater to the player's desire and wishes.

Look at how Metal Gear Solid, Hitman Absolution, Payday 2, FarCry 3 and 4, and Ghost Recon Future Soldiers treat stealth and how it is integrated into the core game. You will see good elements and pitfalls in all of them, and I am willing to guess all stealth games have their own fair of issues.

Check the third video in this thread: http://www.loverslab.com/topic/50739-mount-blade-ii-bannerlord-gamescom-2015-footage/

from 02:00 minutes, but I am not sure if it is for the whole map or if they use it for regions only.

Only things I'd like to see in skyrim and fallout is the the fucking ability to use your hands to climb.

BETHESDA GAVES US HANDS FOR A REASON

Oh and have the console ports not drag down the quality of the PC Ports

we paid for our $500 GPU for a reason you know.

Better animations. you would think with big companies like bethesda they could have at least afford good animator. more fluent movements. from sitting to standing, more variation with idles. hair and body physics also clothing and weapons physics.

Also different walk styles combat styles etc..

Then them lovely animation modders will have no work to do because bethesda already did a good job.

Advanced NPC AI and Emergent AI in RPG's

Only thing I want to see is a fully fleshed out NPC system that allows NPC's to grow, learn and evolve on their own, without player interaction or interference.

So lets take Ysolda for an example:
Ysolda wants to own her own inn.
Ysolda feels for the khaji caravans.
Ysolda also trades with the khajit caravans (never actually seen her do it ingame)
Ysolda buys Sleeping Tree Sap then resells it for higher prices.

She overtime should be able to buy the bannered mare from hulda and achieve her dream.

Literally every RPG gives you NPC's with dialogue like "Oh I have x dream that I will never accomplish because this dialogue is filler to make me appear like I have a purpose!"

Put some purpose in these NPC's instead of making them all static.

Nice thread you have here.

I will contribute some things i'd like to see in the future(i hope i don't end up ranting, sorry in advance if i do :D)

Alright so as we know the newer generation of gamers really don't give a shit about anything really anymore, people just want everything me me me. Gamers nowadays don't really appreciate a good game, they just look at it and go "looks like shit"  or "the graphics suck" you know, people just have a really shallow attitude. And to pander to this companies have taken hand holding to a whole new level in todays generation.

So what i would like to see in the future is:

For companies to stop with the spoonfed bullshit of what buttons do, seriously. It's getting to a point where it is actually insulting when a simple fucking game says "press x to jump!". In the newest DMC you come across the first boss, dante tries to shoot it the girl says "its bulletproof" she hits it with an explosive of sorts and then says "you can hit it now" NO FUCKING SHIT SHERLOK". I absolutely loathe these practices which is why i am a HUGE darksouls fan because the only way to be good at that game is trial and error.

I want more companies to think outside the box, for example look at the game announced at E3 called "cuphead" Nobody is talking about that game yet it looks phenomenal. It looks extremely fun and unique and offers(from what i've heard)a pretty good challenge.

I want companies to stop with pre-order bonuses and console exclusive content.

I want companies to be more intact with their fan bases, offer community gatherings where gamers and aspiring developers, composers and artists can come together to talk about games, get to speak to their favorite developers and visual artists etc.. and answer questions, even if these questions are hand picked. It just seems like companies are glancing at what their fanbase is doing through a passing window.

Also i want square enix to get better PR's. Seriously they do not know how to do presentations or handle public relations. They are however good at building hype then disappointing. I can almost guarantee the FF7 remake will not be out for another 4-5 years.

Funny i should talk about the "me me me" mentality when i clearly am hypocritical but at least im thinking about what others want too.

I wish companies would tone it down on remasters and work towards new content.

Damn this did kind of turn into a rant but being a gamer all my life and watching the industry evolve into what it is today just saddens me to a point where i feel the need to watch a review before i buy a game because of cheap practices when i use to just go buy a random game and know i'd enjoy it because it would have everything on the disc day 1.

Go look and play some old...and I mean OLD games.

Also try and watch some people go back to play some revered titles that they have never played before.

Some of those are serious gigantic shitfest in some form or another, but at the same time there are also things that was ahead of its time.

It is very interesting to use that to compare the old in current times and the current latest and greatest.

I actually did go back and play old games recently. I played final fantasy 12 which was surprisingly good. I went and played DMC 1-3, lost odyssey, i played chrono trigger, dragon valor, grandia, conkers bad fur day, crash, resident evil, sleeping dogs, the list goes on. All these games still hold up to this day. Dragon valor not so much...although i still enjoyed it despite it being very old. The problem is companies are greedy and really do not care anymore as long as they make money. They just use the same formula over and over and over again. A good example of what i mentioned above with companies listening is capcom. They have been getting a lot of praise lately because they have been talking directly with their fans and asking what THEY want out of the company and what games they would like to see. They're talking about going back to their roots and people fucking adore that.

Another thing i forgot to mention about what i want to see in gaming is i want challenging games. You don't get many challenging games these days it's a shame really. The only real challenges in todays games is artificial difficulty assigned with a harder setting.
