    • I like it but think it varies too far from the books (but I can suspend my disbelief and think it's just a different story entirely)

Amazon Prime has released the first few episodes of The Wheel of Time based on the series by Robert Jordan. New episodes come out on Fridays (if you're interested). I was wondering if anyone (besides me) is watching and, if so, what you think of the series thus far.

Its been a looong time since I read this series, are you sure it was misogynistic? I remember it being fairly dull and stereotypical, but I can't remember it calling women thrash or anything like that, more like the other way around with the men being helpless without the aid of their wives/girlfriends etc.

I do think I remember the romance aspects being horrible, and there being way too many characters, I can't see it being a good amazon series.

That would be my review as well.  I liked the books well enough to read them all even though they got dull a ways in.

Hmm, guess I blanked that kinda thing out, sounds obnoxious.

I do remember there being some pretty annoying damsel in distress crap, but it never seemed particularly malicious to me, just uninspired.

For the record, please limit your comments to THE TELEVISION SERIES. All other comments will be hidden/deleted. There is another fine Thread on LL that deals with books. If you want to discuss Jordan/Sanderson's worldviews please take it there or start a separate Thread.

Watched the first 3 episodes they released, won't be watching any more of it. I was a huge fan of the books, until the final book but this Episodic Series is BS ! It is suppose to bring the WOT series to life like the Harry Potter movies brought the Harry Potter books to life. It's a miserable fail. The story doesn't follow the books except in the loosest possible way, none of the characters match their descriptions from the books except possibly Moiraine and Rand. It ends up being a contrived bunch of shit for spreading woke bullshit.

I watched the first episode, and maybe I'll watch more later. Judging by the first episode alone, this show won't hold my attention. I just didn't feel compelled to keep watching, but the need for new content might make it compelling later.

I don't stream. I still buy BluRays but as amazon and others offer their stuff only via streaming, I'll most likely am never going to watch it, even if it would interest me.

books were super derivative misogynistic trash.

Series is hyper simplified woke trash, so hey full circle.

I know we aren't supposed to talk about books, but this is related to my decision on the series.

27X do you mean the books were like Gor series misogynistic?   Even that series of books got boring after the Outlaw of Gor (like the second or third book).

> I saw first 5 episodes. My feelings are divided about it. On one side I loved the (magic) effects although when they were used in mass battles cameras narrow the view on one person. I think that the close fights could be more reliable rather than taking some nice poses with one hand axes and swords. The acting isn't that bad although I think the dialogues should be more developed and not shallow. In five episodes we didn't see anything about the history of different factions like sisters and the children of the light. There are too many unanswered questions that might be answered in coming episodes. So far, I am not thrilled but might watch new episodes.

Separation of "church" and "state" are fine. I didn't care about any of that. Genetic variations of the Source having different effects by isolation and location and genetic make up are fine.

Jordan's females are shallow as fuck, and I don't mean "written simply, without flourish or nuance, like from the 50s", I mean "the Housewaifus of Aes Shedai" where the entire parts devoted to them read like something a tweenage girl that hates all the other girls at her school would write as a serial blogged fanfiction.

I haven't read of Sanderson's or Van Lustbader's pick up after Jordan's so cannot comment but honestly I haven't met ANYone who likes the TV series at all compared to them and honestly most of the people that loved the book series actually only loved that Jordan essentially militarized every spell below 4th level in D and D to it's most violent and combat oriented conclusion and funnily enough that flatness has carried over to the Amazon series as well. The characters aren't particularly interesting and I have yet to see any portrayal that reaches even close to the depth of a GoT character, and I'm talking about second half GoT, much less first.

your survey seems a tad narrow, do you not want input from people who are watching the series but haven't read the books ?

As someone who hasn't read the books the series so far (6 episodes) seems is ok but rather slow. Hopefully it will build some momentum and be paced a little better as it progresses.

Thanks for the synopsis.  While I find you to be rather a "black or white, no in between" , I generally side with you so wrt WoT you have confirmed my suspicions means I made the right choice to just binge watch "The Expanse" (best Sci Fi opera out there now).    I may watch WoT if i see some interesting clip on Youtube,, or if it is the only thing that is on a long flight (on a separate note, why does Airbus consistently beat Boeing on passenger comforts??  I want to support Boeing, but I will opt for an Airbus any time I can)

curious why you would say the first one..   I agree with the 2nd thing you said..  but the first part about misogynistic..  in the books, women were the ones the world looked up to and men were the ones who destroyed the world if they got power..  also, the male protags were most always keep under watch and in check by the women protags..

I remember that was a huge driving message of the story..   so now, I'm pretty shocked you said what you did, considering that's like the opposite of the world in the books...

it's been like a long time since I read the series books, but I remembered the way the world was pretty well at least..  and the women of the tower were the real rulers of the world..

they tried to control everything so that the dark one and the dragon reborn wouldn't be able to destroy the world again.(in their eyes, at least..)

I will never watch the series though.

Benevolent sexism of the sort that William Golding was beset by, perhaps?

I literally can't keep track of all these time travel shenanigans. You go back in time to look for your wallet and boom suddenly the world is ruled by penguins.

The exegesis that the magic itself flips that script where the Men of Source were eternally corrupted by sacrificing themselves and their magic to save the world, thus leaving only women with pure Source to combat the Dark One is again as agent of Light and general goodness, fine.

That's not what I'm talking about. At all. Jordan made the women either nagging harridans or shallow vain jerks, and there is ONE character that doesn't fall under this aegis in Jordan's section. Whether they mean well or not or are "good citizens" is immaterial.

Contrast this series with Dune. Herbert is infamous for having flat exposition machines, and his habit of telling quite liberally and immediately what they were/are thinking leaves NOTHING to the imagination. You look at the current movie and that shit is handled expertly and deftly and the actors put in great work to help that writing. This series has the actors, they sure as fuck do not have the writing, and have literally dropped the main plot of the book because woke.

yes for me, Dune was a wonderful series..   I haven't seen the new movie and I don't know if it's out yet..  but I'm sure it is out by now.. and I'm sure, by what I saw in the trailers and the actors, it's a good/great movie.

I agree with your points about the women's personalities and such..   I did question his writing on that a lot during the book series

Never read the books, so no expectations one way or the other.

First episode was boring though. I didn't really feel I got to know any of the characters, and wasn't much interested in what they were doing.

Then came the attack on the village and things perked up for a bit, but then the monsters overstaye their welcome and I wound up just as bored by the attack as I was by what came before.

I can't imagine I'll be watching any more.
