Z0mBieP00Nani Posted October 24, 2020 Posted October 24, 2020 I know that area (including Falkreath) causes a lot of CTDs, what I want to know is if anyone ever found any kind of consistent way to make that area more stable.

CTD in the same location is almost always caused by a bad mesh/texture added by a mod. I suggest that you look at your load order for things that are likely to have changed the look of that area INCLUDING mods that change the look of common flora and fauna in that area. As @Grey Cloud has implied, many of us have no particular difficulty with CTDs in that, or any other, location.
Grey Cloud Posted October 24, 2020 Posted October 24, 2020 Just to expand on what @Psalam Psaid. Try to narrow down where a crash (or the crashes) take place. If it is at an exact spot then look at a stationary object - that tree texture overhaul or that cabin added by that mod. If it is e.g. near the bridge or around the road junction then look at non-stationary objects/actors - that creature or that bandit which spawn around there.

I would say it's a good testing area of a new setup, because if you crash there you don't need to bother to continue playing your current setup and start searching for errors (installation issue, bad LO, bugged mod, conflict). The area has it all: Water spawns lots of spawn areas lots traveling NPC spawns lots of various creature spawns lots of fights between NPC/creatures mods add followers there lots of trees and grass lots of bandit camps modified by mods first contact with a vampire (Hert is great to see what mod messes up vampires last in LO ^^) mods like to add dungeons and other stuff there mods modifying standing stones mods modifying generic NPC like fisher/hunter mods modifying bandits custom areas added by mods custom creatures added by mods billboard issues become apparent (floating trees) That's one hell of a busy area on my setup.
Z0mBieP00Nani Posted October 24, 2020 Author Posted October 24, 2020 My game always crashes around the forest north of Falkreath, on approach to Half moon mill, on approach to the Lady Stone, and upon approaching the poacher's camp to the north of Whiterun, and always (like 98% of the time) with this error message showing up in the Crash Fix Plugin log "Game has crashed with exception address 0x5F2A40!". The problem is I have no idea what that address is. The poacher's camp has been causing crashes for years now (at least since 2015), though I have observed that I'm able to enter it as long as I go at night, with the lake though nothing seems to work. If I could figure out what that error code is I could probably fix the issue very easily, unfortunately all of my searches have turned up nothing.
woodsman30 Posted October 24, 2020 Posted October 24, 2020 In the Vanilla game there are in fact areas that can cause CTD the areas you speak of is some Windhelm docks is another as is Riverwood and of course the giant scene where you meet the companions. Part is how the game renders aka spawning of NPC, world objects, animals, and water... if you ever clip through the ground you find water in more cases than not why water is so prevalent who knows. Frame rates can cause a lot of issues in these areas rule of thumb nothing faster that 59 fps. SKSE and proper memory blocks tweaks usually take care of this USLEEP fixed a lot of issues with the base game but I am on the fence about all it does but still use it. As noted these areas are great for testing stability.... so in short your not crazy just many have forgotten what a real pain in the ass a vanilla game is and all the issues it had.

Never heard about the frame rate thing you mentioned, I guess I'll try that (though I'm not expecting anything to change). I have the SKSE.INI file that the posts Greg linked to talk about, and it is set up correctly.3

On topic: it's 2020, there are plenty of tools to improve stability and troubleshoot problems that were common or untraceable back in the day. ENBoost, a properly setup SKSE.ini, Bug Fixes and Crash Fixes, etc. Crash Fixes can even tell you if your crash was related to a corrupted mesh or another plugin in particular. Nowadays I can't even imagine thinking it's normal to crash while playing Skyrim.

Nowadays I can't even imagine thinking it's normal to crash while playing Skyrim. Happens to me fairly frequently.. in certain areas that is. For the most part my game runs fairly nicely with the occasional (noticeable) studder here and there, though I'm also playing on a computer that was built around 2012 and that I've been updating. I should probably just break down and build a new one (I mean, it's not like I don't have the cash just lying around), only issue is my knowledge on such things is fairly limited. I was thinking about building my next one off of the New Egg suggestions list, but this feels like it could be a terrible idea for.. many reasons that should be obvious (and probably horrific to those who actually know what they are doing). Anyway, didn't mean to derail my own thread but a part of me is wondering if the crashes could be related to my computer being old.

Z0mBieP00Nani Posted October 26, 2020 Author Posted October 26, 2020 2 hours ago, Grey Cloud said: It's not so much the age as the spec. Well the CPU is an AMD FX - 8350 and the graphics card is a Radeon RX 480 (I got it from Best Buy a while back, has some cool LED lights in it and two white fans to match the light color.. not sure if that might help narrow down exactly WHICH RX 480 I got because apparently there were a few iterations of it with different specs). I should probably mention that I had to update the bios in order to get the CPU to work with the mother board, which went about as smoothly as it could (thanks dual bios for saving my ass once). The computer has been acting a bit strange lately though, for example sometimes I will delete a file off of my desktop and then after playing a game I will see a kind of ghost version of the file sitting on my desktop and upon clicking it an error message will pop up saying that the file is no longer there, the "ghost files" always go away after shutting down and restarting the computer though. Not sure what all of that is about but just thought I would mention it.

That's W10, the same thing has started happening to me after a recent update. Just refresh (hit F5). You need 8GB of RAM and at least 4GB of VRAM to play modded Skyrim. You can do it with 2GB of VRAM but sacrifices would have to be made. Try following this for some good tips etc. https://www.loverslab.com/blogs/entry/7521-conglomerate-01-installing-skyrim-stability-fixes-tools/

I will take a look at that guide you linked, but if all else fails I may try a fresh install of the game. If I went with a fresh install would I need to crate a new character on an un-modded Skyrim first or just clean the most recent save? I know that this glitch at the lake seems to have been more of an issue with players after they installed the Hearthfire DLC and I know for a fact that I wasn't having the issues I'm having now with crashes back in 2014 - 2015, at least not like I am now and back then my computer was a LOT shittier spec wise (mostly because I didn't really know what I was doing when I built it). I'm wondering if the error could be from a corrupted script or something, which is why I'm asking about the fresh install option, I wish there was a tool for mods that would "verify the integrity" of mods, but I don't know of anything like that save for maybe Nif Healer.
Grey Cloud Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Go through the guide and double-check all your settings - ini files, Crash Fixes, ENBoost/ENB etc. Try any other tips and wrinkles you find in the guide and see how things look from there. Steam can check the integrity of the Skyrim files. You could post your load order.

Quite a few mods though I know there are others with WAY more than I have.. which is kind of hard for me to imagine... If you see any bad ones let me know. I ran my load order through WryBash though and it didn't detect anything out of the ordinary.. nothing that I wasn't able to fix (looking at you Grove Matron staff) I did pop back in game after going through the guides and got, surpise surprise, the SAME CTD with the SAME error code though...
