The R.I.P. Thread- Saying Goodbye to Whatever

It's a tragic time for ocean liner fans. The SS United States, the world's fastest ocean liner and the greatest ever built by the USA, is destined to become an artificial reef in the Gulf Coast.

This mighty vessel was designed by arguably the greatest naval architect in the world, William Francis Gibbs. She had her maiden voyage in 1952, but her career was interrupted by the introduction of air travel later that decade. Due to falling passenger numbers, the United States was pulled from service in 1969 and has been sitting at a pier in Philadelphia ever since.

Now, instead of being restored and turned into a floating hotel or museum like the Queen Mary, another ocean liner once owned by Great Britain's Cunard Line, the United States will be sunk in the Gulf Coast off of Florida. It's a shame how this ship, which was once the pride and joy of my country, isn't being preserved for future generations to see. It honestly sickens me.

I never thought an ocean liner to be posted here, but yeah it is a sad good bye to a legendary ship.

I guess it is still a better fate than being scrapped. This way she still serve a purpose and can still be visited by divers.

I've been fascinated by ships since I was a kid.

I always hoped the United States would have been restored and made into something people could enjoy. Give her a second chance at life, so to speak.

She may go down in history as the first and last ship to be sunk in the 'Gulf of America'.

Wonderful voice.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was written by Ewan MacColl who was from my city.

The wiki says 'Broughton, Lancashire' but this incorrect. There is a Lower Broughton and a Higher Broughton and both are districts of the city of Salford which is in the county of Lancashire.
