yepps Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Hey, so I'm somewhat new to modding Skyrim, and I've been having issues with it for a while now. Most notably, Defeat and xaz prison overhaul don't really function at all, and when I try to enter the Whiterun Brothel the game loads for eternity (I have to restart my pc for skyrim to close). Also, my game usually doesn't CTD, except for when I load up skse from the desktop, then load a save, or continue the game, it'll load for a little then crash. Sometimes running fnis again or loading a previous save helps but other times (like right now) the game just refuses to start no matter what I try. I would really really apriciate help, I really don't know what I'm doing. ps - I use vortex to manage my mods, and if you need to know what mods I have installed just lmk.
KoolHndLuke Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Mod list and load order in a spoiler if ya please. Can't tell anything without them. I failed a test today, but maybe I can still help get your game going.
Nazzzgul666 Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 I don't know about Vortex but other mod managers require you to start them and from there SKSE. You should at least check. Also, xaz prison overhaul is terribly outdated, i'd recommend prison overhaul patches which is now stand alone, but also "outdated" to some degree, let's say it's currently rather experimental because it's not updated to DD4 yet. Defeat should work fine, double check if you have all requirements.

It looks a little off to me. Some of those mods depend on other mods in order to work. Make sure you have all their required mods installed correctly. Vortex may not install mods correctly just like NMM didn't, so I would suggest reading up on and switching to Mod Organizer. Also, why the hell would you want to marry Serana?!! She's a real PITA!! Of course she is nice to look at.....

I have NEVER needed to touch a file manually and I NEVER needed to copy or delete a file manually. Sometimes, NMM crashes when installing a mod, but simply removing it and installing it again is enough to solve all the problems. Sometimes, NMM crashes in the profile change process, but simply changing the profile again is enough to solve all the problems. If you do not know how to make NMM work, it does not mean it does not work. Now I have been using Vortex for a few months and, of course, it does not give me any problem. Of course, merging mods is totally unnecessary. The only thing it does is to combine multiple ESPs in an ESP and it is a process open to problems because not all mods can be combined. It is recommended to use it only and exclusively in armor and clothing mods and it is NOT recommended to merge mods with scripts or mods that depend on other mods because any other mod that uses the papyrus GetFormFromFile command will fail. Finally, the only good thing that Wrye Bash does is to generate a good leveled list and it is recommended to use Wrye Bash only and exclusively to generate the leveled list and NOT use Wrye Bash for merge mods.

If NMM didn't give anybody problems, then why did they feel the need to make Vortex? NMM chokes on large mods some times and is only about 95% efficient installing and uninstalling mods correctly - that's a fact that nearly all experienced modders and authors agree on. I use it and can get it to work for my purposes, but I know what it's faults are and to avoid them. So don't try to tell me shit about NMM.

Because i know it. One of the motives for made Vortex is the super slow speed of NMM when instaling large bunch of files. But excuse me, the problem that you are reffering in NMM about hangs when process large files has been solved years ago. The new versions not have that problem. Only need time, a lot of time, but today NMM not hang and make a perfect instalation.

Maybe you're right and they fixed those long time issues with the latest version of NMM. If more people say that it works fine, then maybe I'll recommend it. I install most of my mods manually because I don't trust or need a mod manager to do it for me.

I install most of my mods manually because I don't trust or need a mod manager to do it for me. I have also done manual modding for many years in many games. I even had to manually unpack large files with special compressors using the command console to place a small mod and recompress the files. I know very well what manual modding is. But I also know how much managers simplify things. And I strongly recommend that you use an administrator whenever you can. You will eliminate many problems, many complications and you will eliminate almost all your backup copies. For you, what are you doing manual modding, I recommend Vortex. NMM is too old and slow, but it may also be worth it. But I do not recommend MO for you because the virtual system will complicate things just as it complicates me every time I want to do tests with MO. Vortex needs improvements but it works, it is fast and stable. It's a little complicated, but seeing how you write and what you say, I think you can learn to use Vortex in a couple of days.

Even with the shit-ton of mods available? I went over the limit during the first month of modding it! And no, I don't need MO is the reason I don't use it. To be honest, I've heard of people having trouble with MO installing certain mods before. But not many.

I prefer to get Skyrim to do what I want with the absolute minimum of mods and plug-ins. I'm too old to need to get an erection running around telling everybody how many mods I run.
