Metro Developer Threatens PC Gamers

This has already been covered by Jimquisition and Thequartering on YouTube but it deserves mention here. Someone claiming to speak for 4A Games, the developer of the Metro franchise, has outright threatened that if Exodus doesn't sell well, any future titles, if released, will not be released on PC. This is due to review bombs and boycott threats after 4A announced they were switching from Steam to Epic Games as their launch platform.

Now I try to remain objective when possible. But this is a load of bullshit on 4A's part. The writer of the article--"Scyver"--uses all sorts of excuses that have nothing to do with the core reason for the outrage: their decision to switch from Steam to Epic Games at the last minute. I've got over 60 games on Steam, three on Origin, I don't need yet another launcher and account to deal with. Especially one with a security record as lousy as EG.

I can't speak for others, but I get angry when someone/thing threatens me. Which is a sentiment that is being echoed already by numerous others just on YouTube. The real kicker? This doesn't just threaten 4A Games. Epic Games itself could suffer as one of the biggest releases on their platform just doesn't sell. EG is already in hot water with gamers for their refusal to allow customer reviews and their peace offering is a joke. Even if a developer does opt in for user reviews, we'll have no way of telling if a review is by someone who even played the game or for how long.

Thoughts on this? Predictions on what will happen? Additions to the story?

I have nothing against the devs, but I will not buy the game until it comes to Steam. I just don't like having to install more crapware storefronts to play games. I tolerate steam and GoG, but I will not install any more than that. TBH I miss when you could just buy a game, install it and play it without needing a specific store front for it....

As for the last minute switch to epic games only from metro, that strikes me as a publisher decision more than a dev one, but it really surprised me that a dev would strike out like that.

Does he not understand that there are plenty of *legitimate* reasons not to want to install the Epic games store?

I'd pay extra not to have SSE and FO4 tethered to steam ?.

Any other launcher will force updates. In fact I believe they will be way more non-optional, compared to the possibility Steam offers to only update when launching the game so if you use SKSE or F4SE the games will not be updated at all.

The main issue here is the attempt to "consolefy" the PC space. For several years now Facebook is trying to do that with the "platform exclusives" for Oculus Rift, now things are moving to the mass market gaming.

Personally, the whole game/franchise is limited to one specific platform nonsense just pisses me off.  I love the metro franchise and have bought every single game.  Hell, I even paid for the HD re-release versions.  I won't be buying this latest version, at least not anytime soon.  I know nothing about Epic, and I am not going to sign up for a new platform just for one game.  I am holding out hope they will relent and go back to steam or do a GOG release.  Otherwise, I'll probably just do without.

I do understand why they switched, Epic charges them a great deal less than steam would, but that isn't going to be the whole story.  I seriously doubt the new Metro will sell as well as previous versions of Metro on the PC due to being on an obscure platform.  Time will tell.  The larger cut they get per copy won't mean as much then and they will need to rethink their marketing strategy.

I don't hate steam, mostly because they have their shit figured out.  I'd love to not need it, but you can put it in offline mod and it works just fine.

Origin, they are a steaming pile of horse shit.  Constant updates that can't seem to remember your password from one to the next.  Few things irritate me more than to have to go digging for my password for 20 minutes instead of playing a game all because Origin updated.......yet Again (for the 3rd time this week).

The only exclusive platform/DRM measures that I care for at all is disc format.

If Epic announced that one would require a disc drive to play their games from now on, I wouldn't hold it against them though I would still prefer to have the option to download the games, as well.

If it's not DRM free, I don't buy anything digital. The only game I have in Steam is Skyrim, and that just because, even though I have a physical copy, I am forced to play it through Steam (pretty much an exclusive, isn't it?). So FCK DRM.

Considering that  the physical boxes been sold nowadays usually contain only a paper with a serial number (and no disk) I believe it is safe to assume the era of physical ownership (and disks) is over.

It seems the gaming industry is set on following the path the music industry took (and the movies are currently taking) so sooner or later we will end up with subscription services that let you play as long as you pay the monthly fee (a la Origin Premier).  "Online" seems the new preferred form of "soft DRM", the Epic Launcher follows this trend - you can't play any game you buy from Epic offline.

This is very cool table comparing the different launchers, it kind of proves that Epic prefers to buy it's market share instead of actually competing.

Just a note about Metro on Steam: " Metro Exodus will return to Steam and on other store fronts after 14th February 2020. "

Yeah. I miss physical media myself. I got used to steam over time but I will resist getting other launchers. It still pisses me off that Ubisoft forces you to use Uplay launcher even if you bought the game on steam, which is one of the main reasons I don't buy Ubisoft games anymore.

As for metro returning to steam next year, as far as I am concerned they just delayed the release for a whole year.

If Steam is indeed guilty of not allowing the new Metro to be sold on Epic as well as their own service, then placing any blame becomes harder.

If the end result is all about $, Metro could of raised the Steam selling price enough to offset the difference between the platforms, and let the customers deal with it.

Since it returns to Steam in a year, I'd hardly worry myself. I used to buy titles only after they dropped in price significantly and usually included all the DLC as well. I never subscribed to the '1st' mentality, and the money I save by being late to the party means I get more for my dollar than pre-order fools.

I never play multiplayer games online anymore or else these would be the exception to waiting, but since cheats/cheating is so rampant, I can only feel nostalgia about the good old days.

@sila I miss physical media myself.

No doubt, I have this as an example:

If this is the case, then I "may" buy it.  To wait that long, I damn sure won't pay full price.  They'll be lucky to get more than 20 bucks out of me.

This is most noticeable with Netflix exclusives (Altered Carbon/Black Mirror) and Amazon Exclusives (The Man in the High Castle) to the extent that you cannot buy disk versions of the series, at least not Amazon ones. We will see if Amazon releases disk versions of "The Man in the High Castle" once it finishes. Music, you can thank my generation and Napster/Morpheus for that. :P

Actually we're seeing some disc versions of certain Netflix exclusives already. I got the first season of Castlevania on Blu-Ray.

Koch/Silver Media would have to be out of their minds to think people will pay full price for a year-old game on a new platform. But over the past year we've learned that game publishers aren't the brightest bunch. :classic_rolleyes:

Here is my counter-threat: If they stop selling Metro, I am never going to get around to playing it.

Spoiler

Um... but I reserve the right to change my mind.

Spoiler

I won't change my mind.

Spoiler

Which is why it is so important that I reserve the right to change my mind.

(Er... disclaimer... I have never played Metro and I have so many other games it'll be ten years before I have time to even think about it... seriously, I am scared and shaking in my boots here. *sob* )

Well I would recommend giving them a try at least. There are not many FPS games with a focus on good story left. (fallout 4 and DEFINITELY 76 do not count)

I played the previous Metro games and while I haven't played the new one yet (not until it's on Steam) I heard from friends it's pretty good. Just some issues with sluggish controls and slow character movement that could easily be patched. So Steam players shouldn't have any serious problems in 2020. :classic_tongue:

Yeah no, I am not touching epic game launcher myself. I have just been watching a let's play on youtube (christopherodd's play through, one of my favorite youtubers for that kinda thing. He always takes time to explore and hear side stories that a lot of folks just skip)

From the devs of Rebel Galaxy:

"Q) Exclusives are anti-consumer, why would you do this? (you monster)

A) OK, so that’s a little complicated. And our answer is long-winded. Bear with us.

So, before Valve and the 70/30 split it was pretty darn rough to be an indie (both in terms of royalty share and in terms of the ability to sell things without a publisher). We can all thank Valve for using their leverage to make that happen, and usher in the era we have now. We think it’s safe to say that a large percentage of the games made today wouldn’t exist without it.

Epic is using their leverage to push that even farther, to 88/12. That’s another whole strata of developers who can survive."

I'm guessing a lot of indie devs will be switching because of more money to be had at Epic than Steam ATM.

That's all well and good, but it does not mean I will download the Epic launcher. Don't want more crapware storefronts on my machine than I need, particularly ones with so few features, or ones created by a company that is owned by a shady chinese government corporation (tencent).

And that is why competition is good.

And i won't be downloading that launcher either, Steam, Origin and GOG are enough.

But hopefully some people will, so Steam has to react.

Though this Metro Exodus clusterfuck was not the best advertisment for the Epic Store.

It's like Bethesda. They made one succesful game and now think they don't need Steam ?

Wonder if they'll take another step in Bethesda's direction and ban their biggest fan like FO76 did. :classic_cool:
