So Bethesda did something in the 1.6 patch that has made any mod that attempts to do anything with settlements slowly (or quickly depending on the mods) break the game. This major fuck up was brought to our attention by the folks over at the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch team and Arthmoor has pinned a post on their page asking us to ask Bethesda to fix what they done broke. Or to quote him exactly:

Ā

If you guys want something done about the settlers issue, go vent on it at Bethesda's site: https://community.bethesda.net/thread/53871

They need to hear it loud and clear.Ā

Ā

Just trying to pass the word along to the folks who may not have heard or don't frequent the Nexus.

It's not the first time nor will it be the last time they break stuff they do it with anything they try to update and generally it's mod authors that end up fixing their messes as they are too lazy to do it themselves.

The problem here is that the people who normally fix this sort of thing can't do so this time. Arthmoor has all but said Bethesda needs to fix this because they can't. And if the Unofficial Patch guys can't fix the problem you know its pretty bad.

I bet it was because of the settlement changes coming with the next "DLC".

Whatever. Ā I am mostly unimpressed with the jokes they call DLC for the game anyway. Ā I have been avoiding Fallout 4 for a while. Ā 2 proper DLCs and a bunch of Stuff Packs isn't making me happy I paid for the Season Pass...even tho I bought it before they jacked up the price of it. Ā

I doubt the the griping will solve anything anyway. Ā I will likely just wait until the animations get sorted out and then just mod the living shit out of FO4 anyway and play the way I want to play.

Since when will Bethesda listen to their fans? When? What about all the broken stuff that used to work in Skyrim and Bethesda decided to just leave it broken because they knew the mod community would do it.

Ā

Besides, Arthmoor can't fix everything. Someone else will do it if not that team.

Am I even supposed to be surprised at Beth anymore? Fucking incompetent idiots. I feel for Arth having to fix their fuckups only to have them make it unfixable because of their idiocy. Frustrating.

i find this interesting, i didnt read the entirety of the post but i think i got the gist, settlers will randomly start to change appearences among other things about them changing right? if Ā thats the case that sounds more fun than game breaking, i get to play guess who with my sla- i mean settlers, Ā also it reminds me of this song

Settlers will abandon jobs you have ordered them to do. If you give them laser rifles to kill Raiders, Super Mutants, etc, they can lose the weapons. If you give them any kind of armour, they can lose that too.

Time to take guesses on what they borked exactly.

I'm betting they "streamlined" some code and merged a bunch of settler and container functions. And containers were already borked to begin with, having a very similar persistence problem. No, the container-fixes available everywhere aren't really fixes. Those are workarounds. But I somehow doubt such workarounds are possible with settlers, meaning settlers are fucked.

It is explained in the post what did they break...Ā

They are unloading all NPCs that are not visible by the PC and then loading them back when they get visible again.

This causes stress on the scripting as the NPCs always call all of the onLoad/onUnLoad code and also breaks mod-added NPCs.

Some of the NPCs completely change for seconds if you turn your back to them others get their inventories reset.

Don't worry guys, modders will fix the issue and, besides, Bethesda promised us they keep on using the same engine so it's easier for modders to do stuff /s

Ā

Bethesda pretty much has been hammering randomly at bugs and scripts to make stuff work and prepare it for the entire settlment revamp in the expansion that is coming out (the Nuka one) if 4Chin is to be believed (some of the leaks also talk about achievements which involve playing doll-house with your settlers and mutating them), anyone who has been keeping a tab on the last few iterations of the patches will know how much of a mess they were, and things have been pretty quite in terms of actual fixes (best we got was Save on Exit command for Survival Mode, and Cell Reset is only partially fixed, still can occur).

Ā

Arthmoor and Co. cannot fix this bug, since it's an engine change/bug, whatever you want to call it. They don't have access to the Source Code, there MIGHT be a solution, but it would involved overwriting core files and updating it everytime there is an update for the game (or another mod is overwriting those changes, due to priority), and would only work on PC (plus Bethesda isn't too fond of people uploading edited version of their own files) so it's kinda a weird situation IF that does even work.

Ā

While it's not the death of Fallout 4, I guess the better question is, why bother with a game that has one less core mods open to it, when I can get everything I want back on Skyrim and even New Vegas to a certain extent with less issues. I mean, ifĀ  Bethesda isn't even going to bother putting in the Nuka-Girl-Spacesuit (again, rumors) in a freaking Nuka-World DLC, and is more then happy in popping some really akward bugs in patch for an expansion that is a month or 2 away from release that potentially stops the progression of Achievements and Story (remember when the entire Shergoth bug in Skyrim, that could potentially freeze your quest and stop your progression if you did certain thing in a certain order, same with Assasination quests?) why even waste more time?

Ā

I mean the entire shtick of Fo4 was playing doll-house, thats it, everything else is about as generic and lite as you can get, even the DLC's can't come close to some of the fanatstic smaller quests we had in NV and even sometimes 3 (no Lamplight, no Freezer Cave, no Queen Hole, no Robot vs. Ants fight, they even chickened out from having your character have a relationship, and the did the entire no wife/husband - but can romance weirdo's in the wasteland, ME style). Maybe it will be fixed one day, but I don't understand on how the main selling point of the game that was trying to cater to the "house building" demographic is being punted so badly and why it's being held together with wonderglue.

Well if Beth doesn't fix it, then the work around might just have to be us modifying the NPC leveled lists for settlers and perhaps doing something via scripts to "level up" weapons/armors/clothes by doing something in game...............like most other "upgrades" you do. Ā While not an ideal solution, it actually would be one hell of a lot easier on folks than having them run around and upgrade individual settlers at each settlement.

Ā

By and large however..........most major mod works just need to stay in beta or unreleased until Beth pushes out the final patches and DLC. Ā Then we can be "fairly" confident they stop breaking shit.

Ā

LOL.... I remember the 1.5 Skyrim patch all too well. Bethesda broke every one of my race mods twice in a single week as they "fixed" stuff, then "fixed" the stuff they fixedĀ  :P

While the issue is severe and a great example of how Fallout 4 is nothing like we had hoped for when it was first announced - it's not the end of the world.
I'll need to either work around that bug or have someone else come up with a work-around and I don't have any doubt that that's not going to be a big problem.

Ā

So, everyone take a deep breath - Beth likes to break things fixing things, but they'll eventually come around to fixing more than they break. Otherwise, we, the modders, shall.

I'd normally have something to add here, but everyone's already expressed everything I feel. Bethesda has been on a steady decline in quality sinceĀ Oblivion. Check out their Tweet for the new DLC! The comments there speak volumes about popular opinions regarding FO4.

Thing is, now you have to babysit vault dwellers along with your settlers in the wasteland in your settlements. So you're not just being a worried mother, your now being a nanny.
